Holy crap, I relate to this so much! I’ve been thinking about leaving my job for a while now and moving countries because I just don’t feel happy in what I’m doing. I will be taking a big pay reduction and keep second guessing whether I should be moving but everything you said in this video I was like yes! THAT 👏 IS 👏 WHY 👏 IM 👏 GOING!! Thank you so much Sam really loving your experience/advice style stories ❤️😊

The way he speaks - and I'm not talking about the tone -- leads me to think he didn't do very well at this Big 4 consulting firm. It's hard work and it's competitive. Lots of good jobs that pay well and offer significant high long term earnings potential require late hours in the first few years. When you step out of an environment like that, you realize how boring, unmotivated and frankly mediocre so many working people are.

Sam, what you did was a reaction to a society were is more important material goals more than things that fulfill your soul. And that was evident every monday morning when leaving home going to NY. It's strong imaging you crying feeling empty. I hope you have a good memory of your days in Argentina. I'm older than you and my advice is don't stop following your dreams because you migth regret later. Enjoy life, you are a beautiful person (in all the possible ways!! Hehe)

Sam, I appreciate your vulnerability and openness. Several years ago I left working in ultra-luxury five-star hotels and resorts for work at a nonprofit organization. Like you, I entered into a deep depression while working in the corporate world but it didn't hit me all at once. It was a gradual loss of motivation and energy. I always felt tired regardless of how much sleep I received the night before and work continued to be more demanding requiring more of my time. I spent a lot of time soul searching and to identify my passion and skills. After much reflection and time talking with a Therapist I uncovered my natural strengths and my passions. I set a plan to leave my current job but not before exploring if there were other positions within the company that might better align with my skill sets and passions. Sometimes, it might not be a question of leaving that industry or company but a change in the type of work. I would encourage people to be sure to plan ahead and never leave a job without having a plan and money set aside to live on for at least 4 to 5 months. In addition, I also encourage people to volunteer and intern a lot while soul searching and identifying your passions. I don't make as much money working in nonprofit but it is far more rewarding. Since leaving the corporate world and entering into nonprofit my mental health has improved drastically. I think your video is an awesome testimony of courage and second chances. It's okay to say, this is not for me and then prepare your exit strategy. One last thing I just really want emphasize is the importance I have learned on budgeting my own personal expenses each month. When I worked in the Corporate job I made enough that I didn't have to rein in my spending. Since the transition I have had to adjust and discipline myself on staying on a budget. Sam, if you could share more about your journey out of depression I think it others could benefit from it. Sam keep crushing it.😤 I am glad i recently found your account.👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks for all this, Handsome Sam. Very thoughtful/insightful. I did virtually none of the introspection while managing to be totally self obsessed in my 20s - 30s, kept chasing the corporate golden ring only to have it jerked out of my way each time I approached it. After lots of blind dumb luck, assignments in NYC/ Europe, returned and ended up focusing on life quality, moved to Florida, ought house near beach and found my greatest joy In listening to the roar of the ocean, beach combing, as often as possible. So many beautiful people and moments and memories along the way! I guess what I took away from it all was, like you, that time is drastically short and it’s equally valid to focus on life/work balance, fewer but better quality relationships, spirituality, contributing as opposed to constantly consuming and yet being left hungry. All of this was cemented on a firm bedrock of positivity, growth, happiness. Now I find myself retired early, in beautiful California, settled down w same awesome guy 20 years (), and reasonably happy, without demands that I be hap hap happy at all times. I applaud your efforts to provide quality product and to continue to grow and help others grow as well! How does one guy end up so bright and so beautiful inside and out? And be honest, guys, am I the only one who finds this man’s voice f-ing sexy AF? Till next time ~ ✨✨✨✨💫💫💫💛💛💛🧡🧡🧡❤️❤️❤️🧡🧡🧡💛💛💛💫💫💫✨✨✨✨

Engineering + Business degrees from a top university / Job at an international consultancy firm based in a major international city / Navy suit, white shirt, red tie / Traveled every week, business class, staying in luxury hotels / Unhappy about this empty life / Quit the job after two years ✅ Welcome to the club You are far from being alone. And this is not specific to America, the same syndrome exist in Europe and I have several ex colleagues who also quit after me and started totally new careers. One even went back to University to become a MD. My experience is that this type of corporate world is especially suffocating for gay guys because most of us enjoy being creative, out of the box, and these formatted environments hate that type of approach.

So ironically I also got a job at a big 4 firm right out of university, and for the past couple of months I’ve seriously been questioning why I’m still there. To start with I felt the rush and the prestige and all that but now I just feel like the job has changed me and not for the better and I’m just staying there because it’s comfortable. I was thinking to myself today, if there is a sign between now and Xmas, I’ll quit when I get back in January. And I think a video about someone in a very similar situation at a very similar (or maybe even the same) firm randomly popping up on my KZbin feed is definitely a sign. So thanks, you’ve given me confidence to just go and do it!

Had a similar life experience. Went to a Midwestern University and settled down in a small town working the dream job. Finally I could not look in the mirror as I became so bored and wanting to take a change. But was afraid to give up the money, the title, the big house.....then I put my house for sale, dropped my car off at the bank and got on a plane to the coast. Yes it was hard, job after job, yes i almost gave up then i was hired for a very small startup company (no money, no benefits, but possibilities) AND the small company was acquired by a major Pharma company. And all my fears went away. I had made it. You should take the chance to follow your dreams. IT IS WORTH EVERY PAINFUL THING I EXPERIENCED until my dream came true.

Well, Sam, this was so honest and inspiring, it kinda reminded my my younger self. I quit my job as a lawyer in Athens, Greece to return to the island I was born, just to work as a Director for the local library. After 9 years, I found out it was time to say goodbye again - not to my island, but to my job - a job I really loved and I was so devoted to. For the last ten years, I'm a Social Studies teacher in a local high school, I've written a couple of books, finished a PhD and published a few papers. Not anything really special, but, I believe, is sufficient enough for someone like me. Another thing... Your first video that I saw was your 8mins workout video, just trying to convince myself to do some workout during this quarantine (I confess I haven't started yet, and it's definitely NOT your fault :) . That one made me watch some more videos from your channel. What I realised is that you are a person full of kindness... a really bright soul... and a spirit of goodness... May all your dreams come true.

I was studying Anatomy last year with the intent of moving into medicine, it was very tough and didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. I moved back home with to work and save money because being a student was tough and I wanted to have a bit of financial freedom. This entire year I was comfortable with the idea of working even though it was tough and not what I wanted to do with my life. 3 weeks ago I had an interview for a job promotion that came with a company car and I was so looking forward to it. 2 weeks ago I got the phone call with the job offer. Within the week everything had change. I saw my friends from uni and where their paths in life are leading. I couldn't help think about my un-lived life. I saw in myself that I still have so much potential to do so much good in this world, and I can change things for the better. I have declined the job offer, re-applied for Bachelor in Health Science because I ultimately I want to help fix the health system in New Zealand and work with people to help better their lives.

I’ve been with universal studios now here in Orlando for about 20 years. I probably have grown a bit complacent with it but the growth is simply amazing and there’s a lot of opportunity at the end of the rainbow. I will say that this year I’m going to make a concerted effort to make sure that I get promoted in the same division that I’m working. So next time that you come here to Orlando and go to Universal Studios or Islands of adventure or volcano bay think of me that there is a guy that absolutely loves his job and it’s been here over 20 years. I think you can find a lot of us that work in the corporate environment there that feel the same way!

I'm 65 yo. I have to admit I started watching your utubes because of your attractive packaging, but even then I sensed an interesting person inside. I am a CPA, supposed to be very stable right, had a wife and child so I had financial responsibilities to them. But that didn't stop me from "breaking out" lol. I've had 6 jobs in my life, and I have left each one without having a new one to go to. When it's time to move on I moved on. What I did was each job was in a different industry, so it took me 4 - 6 years to get bored and not learn new things. A glue manufacturer, an electrical wire manufacturer, an MRI and CT company, a 7 location cancer treatment company, a foundation in the woods for students who wanted to farm or raise cattle, a meeting planning company. And each period of unemployment made me bring retirement savings down to zero, but the point of all this is I made changes without a safety net and I DIDNT DIE. Life continues. Almost always lol. It's scary to take risks but it's not often fatal, even though it might be worrisome. Keep up your twisting path through life. You can't see it now but it's gonna work out.

Totally agree with you. As someone that was constantly unhappy with the status quo, I did the unthinkable and left to go to China of all places (shock, gasp). Everyone said no, I didn't know anyone there, knew no language, probably could not eat most of the food, most were a bit shocked when I told them, I had no idea where I was going or if the job offer was even legit that was offered to me, Google didn't really have much information on where I was going to and China was closed off from Google anyway (and vice versa etc). Fast forward 1 year 5 months, it has been the best decision of my life. Best job, wonderful colleagues and clients, just an amazing all round experience. And the culture is just crazy, such a difference in almost every way that I could know. I'm learning Mandarin, and it's amazing. All of you, if you can, do it, just try and live somewhere else. Travelling somewhere, especially unknown, whilst highly risky (and even potentially dangerous), can (and hopefully will) be one the best decisions you could ever make in your life. I've learnt more about myself in this 1 year and 5 months more than I think in 15 years of living in the UK. Of course, the coronavirus has dampened my efforts as I left before the outbreak for holiday and now am travelling in south east asia until it subsides, but still, I totally resonate and agree with Sam in this video. If you are unhappy (and stuck), you should do what makes you happy, your happiness is the most important thing in life.

I definitely had a moment like this - in 2015 - when I got my longterm concussion. I threw me out in a major identity crisis because I couldn't use my head anymore (I studied a very long education in university in Denmark) - and I couldn't visualize any future, because no doctor could tell me when the concussion would end. It lasted 1.5 year and until this day I am still recovering only now being able to work full time. But these 4 years of 'free time' has lead me to discover so much about myself, including the fact that I am gay (I am a woman). And I have started in therapy - which is a true gift (try it, you guys). So, I am at a good place in my life atm.

In this particular video about quitting your job and moving abroad, it was very similar to my experience. I came from the Philippines about 20 years ago living my corporate job that had become very monotonous and stressful. Taking that chance and living my life. I was closeted (very religious family) and frustrated with the way my corporate career was going so after 13 years of service i quit and decided to move to the USA. Fast forward, i am now married to my husband (he's caucasian) for almost 5 years (together for 15 years). I'd say that i have no regrets making that decision. Sam, thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and honest account of your life transition. I also failed to fully value my innate talents and I let my creative endeavors drop off to pursue a career goal that I though would bring me happiness. Ultimately, I was left feeling unfulfilled and stressed out because I was unhappy. I do not regret working hard toward a career, even though if it ended up not being the right one for me. I truly loved getting my education and I learned many valuable skills in my profession. But, I absolutely regret not having had the wherewithal to move on earlier in my life. Or, perhaps, I just needed to take the time to learn the lessons that period of my life taught me. Now, I find myself at another crossroads, and I have started following a path that I hope will be a better fit. I have often been the friend/mentor to others who has encouraged individuals to take a chance and pursue their passions, and it has been a joy to do it. But, now it is time to push myself to chart a new course. Your story is both good inspiration and validation for those who need it. As long as we are here on earth, there is always a fresh day to try something new. "It is never too late, in fiction or in life, to revise."----Nancy Thayer.

I had a similar experience. I grew up in a town knowns as Joplin Missouri and one day I had two options. Stay in Joplin with my dad or move with my mom to North Carolina. A lot was going of in my life in Joplin that was not good or mentally healthy to be around so I decided to move with my mom. We moved in with her high school sweet heart. He was Sargent Major taking his first assignment in his new rank. Well 4 months later he made the promotion bored to become a Command Sargent Major and we found out we would be moving to Germany. Fast forward to just a little over a year and we all moved to Germany in November 2019. I love it her in Germany and the experience is amazing. Unfortunately with the virus going around there is no traveling around. One thing I have learned on this journey is I want to say apart of the military life style. I am an old guy and impressed with your willingness to follow your desires and dreams blindly. Moving like you did was my entire attitude through life; and I got to fully retire at age 42. My life, including work, has always been great fun and I was challenged to get educated in many different areas. Making my decisions upon what I felt in my mind and my heart paid off. I hope you get the same.

I related with your story from beginning to end: unhappy at a corporate "play-it-safe" job, crying in the bathroom, having terrible anxiety because I was getting everything I ever wanted and somehow I was unhappy, remembering my student days in Madrid as the happiest time in my life, and finally realizing that I was wasting my time if I was unhappy. Decided to move to Paris to get my graduate degree, I've been here 3 months and so far it has been a very enriching experience in many many ways.

Hi Sam. Thank you for sharing these experiences with us. As a older person, I can tell you that you will go through many and varying degrees of difficultly life reevaluations. The good news is that you have a logical process on how to conductor these evaluations, so awesome job on that! Also, that time you made the right decision for yourself, but not all will be correct. However, you do learn from making the wrong decision. Thank you again for your honesty and sharing. 💙💜❤💚❤💜💙

Hey buddy, great content. 👌. I recently completed my Chartered Accountancy internship at one of the big 4 firms and decided to take a leap of faith to pursue my passion for teaching. It's scary as hell, but making a difference in the life of others will be worth it at the end of the day. It takes so much courage and then determination thereafter to make it work. 💪. Proud of us though. 👍. Lol, 2 years after you posted the vid. 😂. There it is. 😎

I'm on my third career in life so far as a thirty something year old, all of which were completely different (politics, teaching and central banking). Each leap was driven by learning what I didn't like about myself or by what I thought (then) was professional failure. They were great growing experiences and I wouldn't trade them. They actually make you figure out what you want in life (outside your career). Definitely not the only one!

You are such a joy to listen to. ... In my day we weren’t given the opportunity to study abroad. Hence I’ve never been abroad except to Canada which doesn’t count. I also grew up in an era where you had to hide from being gay hence married for 25 years, 4 children, and divorced after I finally came out later in life. I finally came up with a small goal and moved from Northern Virginia to St. Petersburg, FL to retire this year. Wanted warm weather year around and professional baseball! And trying to make friends. ... But I missed out on my younger gay dating years and am working through the grieving process for that. ... But good for you and I know you WILL succeed in everything you do, Sam.

Sam, your experience really resonated with me. I was part of the highly competitive networking and interviewing process with the big four as well. I thought my dream would be a tax CPA and remember being exhausted as a student after a long networking meet and greet. I interviewed for all of the Big Four but didn't get past the first round. I thought I would be so screwed. I ended up instead working in creating content for an education company, and that ended up being a job I loved because I could be creative and use my hobby of writing trivia questions. I feel like if I had been offered a job at the Big Four, thinking that my dream was reached, I would be in a similar situation as you experienced - feeling burned out, depressed, and uninspired and finally getting out. I've had a few jobs since then that focused on my creativity more (and pay decent..!) and I loved every single one.

I also did a foreign study in Madrid! Then, with my Spanish, I became a flight attendant. People were surprised I did that (f/a) because everyone saw me as an intellectual, which I am, well, specifically a weather geek honestly. However, as a flight attendant I've had so many adventures around the world and the flexibility of that job gave me the chance to actually get my masters in atmospheric science. I guess my point is that your livelihood doesn't represent your entire meaning of your life on earth. How do all of your endeavors together create a meaningful package?

Just come across your testimony and found it so interesting! You seem to be so clever, not the typical US type, for whatever that means, and above all so daring and you are right! In today’s world young men and women your age do need to see the world to reflect on their own lives, what matters really to them! I did leave my country at 22 for a year, but it’s nothing compared to you experience. Of course for me that was like 30 or so years ago (OMG!) and today it’ so much easier that no one should miss that experience! Thank you 😀

I enjoyed hearing about your experience! I'm going to turn 31 next week and I'm just finding my passion and what really gets me going in life. I think that in North America (I'm from the Canadian prairies) we have it backwards. We go from high school to college and out into the world expected to start our lives and have it figured out. Well, shouldn't we be allowed some time to travel, see the world and find ourselves in order to make sure we know what our passions are? Just my thoughts haha. I wish you all the best now that you're back in the US and I look forward to new videos every Monday! PS - I'm starting my own lifestyle KZbin channel soon, so be on the lookout for me! :P

Well said Sam! Now I know where you learned your Spanish. I had followed a similar parallel to yours, but not enough space in the comment section to go through all the details, so, I'll just highlight a little. When I went to Penn State Univ. years ago, I was orgianlly going to be a meteorologist, but the physics and math were too difficult for me. I always loved languages and traveling, so, I ended up going into teaching both Spanish + ESL, including a student exchange program in Costa Rica. That is where I had my first long term relationship by the way (many many years ago). To this day, I still teach and also do medical interpreting here in the San Diego area. I love it! There's so much more I want to say, but probably not enough space here.

Great revealing and inspiring video Sam. I love how you said you were too wrapped up in your work resume’ and neglected your life resume’. This happens all the time with people who are married to their job and end up neglecting the one’s they love. I had a similar experience where my company built a new plant and I was offered a higher position but would have to leave my family & friends in order to get this position and I did it. I moved from Ohio to Iowa, not knowing anyone out in Iowa. I’m glad I made the right decision to just go for it. Single af, like you, no kids, I thought this is my time to move forward in life. Don’t get me wrong, i do miss my family and friends, but I needed to do this for ME. I too was uninspired and just stuck in the position I was in, and this was my way out to challenge myself and better my outlook. Keep the videos coming Sam 🙌😊

I went into private consulting, working for my friend who needed help with certain aspects of tribal governance and tribal enterprising. As it turned out, I had all the experience needed to help tremendously in something I'd never even considered. I work at that part-time which allows me to be free, with another job, during the daytime to do those things which I find personally satisfying. It never would've happened had I stayed in my comfort zone. Today, my satisfaction level with myself is the highest it's ever been, even though I work two jobs.

Interesting story Sam and perhaps from your perspective unique, but we all go through these transition points in our lives. Happens every ten years or so and as Jere said below my post, you're going through a transition now. Usually 28-32, 38-42 and so on. The important thing Sam is that you never allow fear, real or imagined, to stand in the way of your journey. You've already proven that to yourself by having quit your job and moving to Argentina. You're finding your way through this thing we call life Sam and in the words of Joseph Campbell, he once opined that the cave we fear to enter holds the treasure we seek. I was never one to live a life of what if's. If a total stranger happened to strike up a conversation in which both of you had some things in common, would you walk away, or would you pursue knowing more? So many times in life we color our feelings based on what we were brought up to believe, when in fact, there are many different ways to look at the same issue, whatever it might be. Whatever you may decide to do in this short life we have Sam, follow your passions as your creativity is truly boundless. So whether you express yourself through art, music or anything that allows you to grow as a human being, follow your heart's desire, because when we fall into the trap of living a life of what if's, we finally come to the realization that had we taken the moment to sprint in another direction, our lives could well have been that much fuller and rewarding. JMHO Sam. Enjoy the journey....:)
