I Quit Social Media. This is My Story. (mental health, validation, social media detox)

It's Giving Growth

Жыл бұрын

One year without social media as a Gen-z 24 year old. I quit social media a year ago and started living my life instead of watching others live theirs. In this video, I tell my story of the top 5 struggles I had with social media, the alarming statistics of social media and mental health, time, comparison, etc and why I left social media. I also go over the highlights of my life since quitting. In each section of the video, I’ll ask you questions to think about to maybe consider a social media detox, a dopamine detox.
Are you watching this video while your room is messy?
OR when’s the last time you saw an influencer on a million dollar vacation and thought ahh my life is perfect as it is? If you feel attacked, I'm in the same boat as you. No shade. I definitely dealt with procrastination, fomo, anxiety, and lower self esteem while I’ve used social media. Most people don’t realize how much social media actually affects them. But at the same time, it’s just a platform, where we choose what to follow and what relationship we have with it.
SO Have you ever thought about why you downloaded instagram or facebook or snapchat to begin with? And why do you continue to open the app everyday? What was your reason? Have you really ever thought about why you have an instagram? If you do have a reason, does your social media feed prove that, reflect that intention? If you go on it right now, are you going to see things that make your mindset better, your relationships better or are you gonna see a bunch of million dollar vacations and edited models that make you feel poor or give you body image issues? Have you ever thought about taking a social media break?
So many people have a story like this, stressed about likes, number of followers, what kind of reaction, and how much praise their posts will get. At the end of the day it’s basing our self worth on external factors. Social media has made this SO common that this group of people are actually referred to as “Generation Validation.” It’s not just wanting to be liked, which is quite normal, it’s needing to be liked and is a psychological concept studied called “contingent self worth.”
A lot of people say that they want to just share their life and it’s not about getting validation from people, which is definitely possible, but if you want to know for sure, ask yourself this: if you post a picture publicly to the world, and you knew that all your friends and family saw it, but it got no likes, zero likes. Zero heart eye emojis in the comments, would you still feel just as happy and satisfied with posting it. If you really are not posting for other people, Would you still post it if it got no likes?
Something else I struggled with was not just how I felt about myself, it about how I felt in comparison to other people.
Social media felt like one big comparison game
Whether it’s looking at the likes on your gym pic v your friends gym pic or watching people have fun at a party you weren’t invited to, or comparing the size of your engagement ring to someone else’s it comes down to comparison. And it’s a losing game because no matter how much you make or what you look like, you can go on a vacation and have so much fun but then you go on social media and you see someone who went on vacation who got proposed to or stayed at a fancier hotel and all of a sudden, what we did, who we are is not enough.
Also, Statistics show that for every selfie we see, around 10 attempts at that selfie have been made -- is that you? Have you taken a picture over and over again to the point where it upset you? Have you ever posted a picture of you smiling when you weren’t happy? Or posing in front of a car that wasn’t yours? Or just trying to make your online presence be a better, edited version of reality?
Now --- let’s talk about screen time, shall we. I used to spend hours scrolling, I used to stay up and at night lose sleep, my precious sleep to scroll on social media, to watch people who I didn’t even care about. Sometimes I didn’t even want to be on the app, I had so many other things to do like work or cook or clean and I would just find myself not being able to get off. It was such a compulsion. As soon as I got up, like before my brain was even fully awake, my arm would reach out over like a zombie and grab my phone and open the instagram app. And that’s how I started every day. It didn’t feel like I chose to do it, like I intentionally wanted to go on the app before I could even see straight in the morning, it just felt like something I…did. Like I was just programmed to do. It was a social media addiction.
….watch the full video for this plus more :)

Just this morning at the gym, I noticed a women scrolling and pecking on her phone without doing a single exercise. For at least 30 minutes she was doing this! 😱. I finally left and as I headed out the door, she was still scrolling and pecking. Amazing!

Wow that is crazy I use to see that too at the gym and I work out at home and get through my workouts with ease without being on my phone and I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m only 23 btw. That is crazy that’s a waste of a gym membership if she’s not going to do any exercise. This is the world we live in unfortunately that is really sad

@@willnash568 Taking a break from social media is definitely not a trend. I believe many individuals are tired of what social media has become over time- which is more focused on marketing and putting on a show for followers. It is very possible for anyone to go long periods of time without looking at social media. People are not doing this for attention and praise, but rather they are creating this type of content to show others who relate to being over how social media is and how giving social media a break or deleting their profiles helped them out. Also, every social media platform differs in a way. They may seem the same to you, but KZbin is not like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Tik Tok (the KZbin Shorts are the closest to Tik Tok), or Twitter.

When I got married in my 20s I had such a great wedding and I invited all my friends at the time. I kept thinking I'll see a TON of posts on Instagram about the wedding, just like my friends do for their other friends!! Turns out I was so wrong! No one reposted the wedding, put up a photo, or added any captions to a post nothing! I was a little shocked. And I felt sad. Why didn't anyone post the wedding and tag me? Was I not a good enough friend to them?!? Only to see one of those friends posting a DIFFERENT friends wedding on Instagram a few weeks later. That's when I knew these weren't real friends.

Honestly this video was so needed for my mental health. As someone struggling with depression, instagram makes it worse. The main reason for my depression is my low self confidence and my descent from being an extrovert to a low self esteem introvert. I feel rejection when i talk to new people or try to socialize more. Seeing people living thier lifes while going through such a hard time made me more miserable.

I'm currently on a Social media Detox. I definitely was addicted to it and feel so much better when it isn't such a huge part of my life. Focusing on only my life has definitely helped with my anxiety. Ive found that I don't want to waste precious time in my life scrolling through content of other people's "perfect" lives Neither do I want to share my personal life with people who I barely know. This detox had been tough at times but it's videos like this that remind me why im doing this. 🤗💯

I quit fb 8 months ago. Never had instagram or anything else. I quit because I find it bizarre. I personally never could bring myself to post anything because it’s weird to think anything I was doing was so important. Selfies are weird. And I don’t care to brag or share food pics. I think it’s honestly the strangest thing that people think everything they do in a day is so important that it should be shared. I also find it weird that people post where they work and live. Great video! I deleted my Facebook account 10 months ago and I can't say that I miss anything about it! I was feeling the exact way you were on social media! It got to the point where after seeing over a hundred likes on other people's posts and seeing way less than that on my posts, I started questioning my validity in life. Facebook eventually became as if I were in middle and high school all over again! I was just like Charlie Brown!!! Something in me snapped after so many years of being on Facebook and when it came to talking to people I went to school with. Were they true friends? Not many of them. I was getting more and more irritated with all the good stuff going on in their lives while I had practically nothing. So I decided one day (and after watching lots of videos on here of people who quit social media) to just give up Facebook. I have my own way of thinking that I no longer have to worry about being judged.

One thing that surprised me though, is the long-lasting effects of social media, it's been 4 months and I still think of how something would look on my profile. Every point here is true. Especially the point of comparison with others is totally true, there is some degree of comparison even if we choose not to. The posts and updating the status constantly keeps the person engaged in an activity which is the least rewarding and most time consuming. The person who is posting is in a constant wait as to who is checking the posts and status and liking them, instead of investing that time in some precious skill. I feel instagram is only for people who have already accomplished a high level of mastery in their lives.

social media got so bad for me I would always go back to the photos I posted and stare at them. I'd continue to do that to a photo I once loved enough to post it, over and over, until I eventually stared at it too long and found a flaw or something so small that I didn't like it and I would delete it. I took a couple months off social media a couple years ago and it was really refreshing. But it's ofc addicting and with the pandemic I wanted to make a new account to keep up to date with some friends. But recently, I could tell my happiness has been declining and I'm trying to take another break from social media to work on myself more. Idk if anyone else ever done this but sometimes I would close the app just to open it right after 🤣 idk why this is so difficult !! 😭 Another great video, thanks sm!!

I haven’t invested my time into any social media platforms. I do have LinkedIn and that’s it. Tried Facebook, but DELETED that less than two months after signing up.

This video is so helpful to me. I've been on instagram since I was about 13 years old (I'm 24). I feel as if I have missed some normal parts of my teenage years because of social media. I wonder what the long term effects of social media will have on my mental health? I've grown to hate watching other people's lives. I want to get off social media, but there's always this FOMO. I will definitely be asking myself these questions whenever I feel the need to scroll.

Glad I found your channel what you're still (relatively) small and get to support you from this point on I've been thinking about my social media use and watching a bunch of those "i quit socials" videos. Yours is one of the best I think. Love the personal anectotes that contextualize your decision. Plus you have great presence and speak so naturally to the camera Will keep coming back to your videos when (if haha) I ever decide to jump on the content creation bandwagon. Cheers!

This was one of the best videos on quitting social media! You covered all the points which were actually resonating with me. I quit SM 5 years ago but my reason was my exams. I used to a writing page where I posted self-written poetry and short stories, but.. I didn’t have many followers and used to have 35-40 likes on one post, that was almost 10% of my followers. When I read other writers posts whose writing were okay-ish (to my perspective) having hundreds of likes! I admit I myself was not supreme writer but my writings were usually different and good to read, unlike others, who wrote about same stuff using same words. I went into rabbit hole of comparison. I took breaks multiple times before quitting and my exams became a solid reason to quit. I didn’t have any account where I posted my personal photos, as I like to keep my life private and don’t like to show off 😂. Now, I just use YT, whatsapp and linkedin (but not regulary, I just browse it on Google). In nutshell, if you’ll give control to these virtual platforms to control your life, your mood, it’s going to exploite it and don’t let it do that! ❤

When i realized I wasn't welcomed on social media, i said F this! Im out. People on social media made me feel just like how my family felt, which was not appreciated. I would always reach out, but nobody cared, so i just started falling back, and now i hardly if ever use it. Now im living my truth and being real with who i am without any shame. It's not like people really liked me anyway. You remind me so much of this lady i had a major crush on some years ago.

I’m so addicted to KZbin and I need to quit. I act like I’m on here for information but really I could go to the library, check out a book, and get way more information like that which is actually verified instead of random people talking because they want money and subscribers or to sell a course.

I planned on taking a social media break for the first 25 days of January 2023 and it's now the middle of March and I still have yet to fully go back on. I did briefly go on for like 5 min on March 14th and was not impressed and got back off. It's like I have no interest anymore. I really think it's unhealthy to know about so many people's lives. (I still go on youtube but I don't see it as social media because i don't post my own content or know anyone personally on the app.)

Trust me you did the right thing, you didn’t miss out on anything at all. I deleted social media off my phone and it’s been the best thing I ever did and I’m much more happier. Most importantly you have more time on your hands when you’re off social media, meaning extra time to do more things and get things done that you have put off for so long because of social media being the distraction

you seem super wise - your channel is a gem!! i have wanted to delete social media for a while. the issue is i don't know anyone who doesn't have it, and i feel like i'll be judged as 'weird' for deleting it. where do you meet people who also don't have social media and will actually meet up in person instead of just snapchatting all day?

I was on Facebook for 2 years around 2010, then off for 7 years. I was then on it again for 5 years recently and got off 2 months ago. I have always felt better OFF of it. Always. Facebook like all these apps are addicting and designed to be that way. I was on Facebook about 2.5 hours per day. Easily. People underestimate how many hours they are on these apps. As somebody who grew up in the 80's, it was a much better time and people were happier without all this comparison stuff on social media. You were forced to be able to have conversations with people instead of looking at a phone. When you were standing in a roller coaster line for 2 hours in the 80's, you had to either occupy your mind or talk to people in line. It was better this way. Trust us Gen X people. It was better.

I deleted Facebook and Twitter back in 2019 and then deleted Snapchat in 2021. I never got TikTok but I have KZbin and Instagram. I officially deleted Instagram today and have decided that I’ll only keep KZbin. I literally noticed myself scrolling for hours on Instagram and had to get my life back in control. I t hasn’t even been a couple hours but I already feel better 😅

I would always keep deactivating my account because I hated how nobody liked my posts. My sisters would also do big birthday posts for one another but leave me out. So, I was in a spiral of jealousy and depression. I realized that no one bothered to reach out to me and it hit more when it was my family ignoring me. I would even give friends and family my phone number but they would only contact me through social media. I deleted my facebook today but I have this fear that people will forget who I am...

Bottom line is Use Social media , When you Don't loose money or carrier while wasting time . When your life has too much to show then you can use it , You will not feel bad then . We feel bad cause we are jealous , Its natural human behavior . So Quit social media Until you don't achieve anything great 🙂

Just want to say thank you. This was the video that finally got me to delete my instagram account after deactivating/ going back and forth for a few months. As a guy, I mostly posted my photography and rarely photos of my personal life. But still, it felt like I was posting photos more for other people to see than for me. Sometimes photographers justify needing instagram to share their work, but I think being addicted to likes or follows is still a big reason why we post on there

I thought it was great when IG gave us the option to hide likes. I would love it even more if they allowed us to hide our follower count as well. For me, it's quite easy to unfollow accounts of those who don't inspire me or I no longer care to keep up with. However, removing followers is harder for me because it feels like a "loss". I like seeing a higher follower count, which to your point ties into external validation. These social media app developers *know* this, and that's why none of them give you the option to hide follower count (aside from KZbin). They want us to stay on their app and obsess over growing our following. It's pretty gross.

I’m adorned with social media with virulent contempt. The more I expended my life on the futile expression of my life, the more I gave to a power that confronted, estranged, alienated, and thus oppressed my will to life. This is what is called “surveillance capitalism.” Your data, is sold to Amazon or Spotify for future profits. The platform encroaches and exacerbates my own financial and mental health in an ever so perpetuating way. Thank you for your service for those who wish to live a life of regained power and freedom. Keep making videos 😊
