Student teacher here! I feel exactly like this. The anxiety. The guilt. Not feeling like myself. My gut is telling me to get out now, but I don’t want to let everyone down.

I say finish (if this is your last step), get your certification, & then use that to leverage in your job apps. Could be used in nonprofit work & education outreach. Good luck!

Thank you for shedding light on this issue. My opinion is that if you want to go into teaching, don’t. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes you just don’t see. The job is incredibly stressful and you’re overworked for trash pay. These kids are NOT the way they were when we were in school.

I feel like to tell people to never go into teaching is going to put society in a very bad place as there will be no education and what little educators they still are, are not going to be compassionate like we have now. It’s a double edged sword.

@@juliaship13 You have a point, but at the end of the day, that is where education is headed anyway. People already know how miserable of a profession it is, which is why there has been such a decline in teaching majors and massive turnover. Kids do not care about schooling anymore. They find it pointless, and they are there just to be there. I feel like it dwindling day-by-day, and it will not get better unless there is a massive overhaul of the entire K-12 system.

I like teaching, I dont like being a teacher. Everything you said is me. All the breaks I have anxiety. Thanksgiving break all week. When weekend comes I feel guilty if I dont lesson plan and grade on friday night and Saturday. Hate that there is no work / life balance. The job consumes you so much that you can't even look for a new job. For me, the kids are not enough for me to stay. Honestly, their behaviors make me want to run.

Also I didn’t go to school to teach either. But later got licensed. I learned that it was meant to be my stepping stone & that it was! I’m now getting paid more, working less, & happier! Went back to a career field similar to what i went to school for originally & I’m thriving here! Also, went back and got my license & certification for that degree as well, ALL DURING THE PANDEMIC. I have no regrets. Although i loved my kids & crazy families I have no plans to return to the classroom.

I am 28 years old and have been a teacher for 3 years. I have a master's degree and studied for 4 years to become a teacher... I know all your feelings about Sunday scaries, always feeling tired and always thinking about work and lesson planning. This summer I got a feeling, like an awakening - "Quit". It kind of came from nowhere, but I had been spending all summer thinking about "wonder who my new colleagues are, wonder if we will be enough teachers for these kids, wonder if the colleagues will be professional" and so on... It's not right spending your summer's vacation feeling anxious. I have now been back to work for two weeks and two of my colleagues are very unprofessional and don't take their work seriously. I have done everything. I have decorating classrooms, writing letters to parents, planed the whole first week for our first graders and so on... And the two colleagues have already been home "sick" these first days of school. The admin can't seem to fire anyone because there are not enough people to hire. There is so much stuff that I find negative about this job as the days goes by and I feel sorry for it. The salary is not worth it either. If you had worked for 25+ years you won't get extra credit for it with better pay. You earn just a couple hundreds more than a teacher like me that had only been in the career for some years. I love the children and to make their days and they like me too, but this is not my calling if I'm feeling this anxious and tired all the time. I will try to survive this school year and then quit and go back to college to study something else... Feels a bit crazy but it also lightens my heart. I have always had a big interest in the tech world, like coding, but had always had a low confidences in applying something in that field. But now it's my time...

Hi. I ran across this video and saw your comment. I feel this exact same way. I am trying to survive this year, but I will definitely not be returning after this year. Also, I am currently looking for other opportunities and if I come across something I like I am definitely taking it. You're right. The things you have to deal with is not worth it. I am on year 10 and feeling this way about a job constantly is no way to live. Fellow educator rooting for you.

I was in the process of getting my certification through Texas Teachers when I decided teaching wasn’t for me. I was an after school instructor for a year and I SWORE it was what I wanted to do long term. It wasn’t until I started doing my observation hours where I began doubting myself. Long story short I’m working in a law firm now! Teaching wasn’t for some of us and that’s okay ♥️ Wishing you luck on your new job!

Good for you for trying and realizing teaching is not for you. I've been told that I'm a great teacher and I have tried teaching in public schools and private schools only to realize that although I do enjoy the teaching part I don't actually enjoy all the other stuff that comes along with it such as students behavior and administrative demands. Life is too short and you need to do what makes you happy.

Yes I’m done teaching I been teaching for 12 years and subbing as my last time in the classroom and I was burnt out I got tired of the bad behaviors coming home with migraines stress and waking up with anxiety and the eye twitching . Girl I been there wanting to get out of education so bad I was applying for many jobs over 5,000 jobs constantly getting rejected. Feeling like I’m never going to get out of the classroom. Till I took matters into my own hands i continued to sub while I paid for my business to get off on the ground. Pretty soon I got some sales and my business continued to flourish and I have been happier ever since.❤

Congrats Miss Brianna on prioritizing your health! Not all teachers have the guts to do it. The first 3-5 years of teaching is actually a teacher's "decision-making" time. It is where you will get a wider idea on what teaching, especially in the public schools, is. I have been teaching for almost 10 yrs now and I am having anxiety coz in our country there are a lot of drastic change happening in our educational system. It kind of eats me up. If only I have your strength to leave teaching and land a better job.

As someone who’s taught and subbed for 25+ years, I can completely understand needing to get out of the classroom and away from campuses. I only subbed a few times in 2021 when most schools were hybrid. My local district in town offered ZERO training for subs teaching online using new programs they’d implemented. I considered returning to subbing this year because the pay is pretty good for the area , I enjoyed the kids and teaching in general. However, school started on Aug. 10th and every single day there have been fights and/or threats of shootings or stabbings at several schools in the District. Most of the threats are at the Middle Schools & High Schools. The district has over 30,000 students (TK-12th). Today a 13 year old was arrested for making criminal threats. He made a statement threatening to commit a school shooting. The statement was made to a Staff member. A 6th grader posted on social media he was going to take a gun and shoot kids at school. Everyday there are fights and threats made at the MS (5) & HS (4) campuses. There are no serious consequences by the school district to deter others from doing the same thing. Teachers have been injured & today a fight broke out in a classroom where there was a sub. I know several who said they are quitting because there is nothing done about it. They are looking at smaller, independent districts & private schools that follow through on what they say.

The real problem is the currently prevalent attitude that anyone can be successfully educated, at least from an academic standpoint. This reveals a total ignorance of the implications of having a below average IQ. It is my contention that persons who cannot handle individual academic subjects require vocational training which is team oriented and focused on projects, just like the world of work. And this applies to at least half of the population or in some school districts perhaps even two-thirds of the kids. I’ve had reading classes in a large urban high school where the smartest kid in the class had an IQ of only 90 and several of the kids only had a 3rd grade reading level even though they had been socially promoted all the way to the 10th grade. This social promotion nonsense needs to end at the very latest with the 7th grade but perhaps as early as the 5th grade, at which point the illiterates need to be shunted off into full time manual arts supplemented with recreational reading, art appreciation, and so forth preferably ungraded so as to avoid humiliating the poor little simpletons. And yes, such types are indeed simpletons. But that needn’t be the end of the world provided they get realistic and appropriate trades training so they’re capable of working when they reach their late teens. And by working I don’t mean dead end service and retail jobs. They need to learn skilled trades.

I was a career changer at age 45 to teaching. I spent evenings and weekends grading classwork & tests, writing lesson plans, following up with emails, creating weekly newsletters, creating computer presentations, etc. Students would crumple up the lessons I passed out- threw them on the floor. I lasted nearly 10 years, behavior issues put me over the edge. No pension now, no nice retirement, no insurance. Stressed and anxious too now, but I just couldn’t do it anymore.

I can relate so much to how you were feeling while teaching. I'm a preschool teacher and teaching can feel rewarding at first but there's so much that goes on that you are not told until you experience it. At the moment, i'm also at a point where I'm re-evaluating the pro's and con's of whether I want to come back or not next school year but I'm to what seems like holding on by a thread to try to finish the school year. It's affecting me mentally and emotionally and I'm not liking that I'm putting my mental health as a least priority. Trying to stay positive and hoping that a better opportunity arises.

I got a job teaching for a private tutoring company. Very fun, rewarding and I love it. Started out in-person, but transitioned to 100% online format. Very convenient and no longer commute anywhere. I have over 30 students over 5 days. :) I too would be stressed working at a public school, but this online program is perfect for me. I am currently a sub and have been since 2018 (NC & FL). I've taught preschool but plan to teach Kindergarten in the Fall. I've been blessed to sub at 5 wonderful (top high and middle) schools in Jacksonville, FL. However, there's no amount of money that would persuade me to teach past 2nd grade. Some of these middle school girls and these attitudes along with the cell phone issue would drive me crazy. I am self-employed for the most part but find it difficult to get things I want (new house, car, etc) because my income isn't steady, so I'm going to teach for 2-3 years and see how it goes. I'm happy you got out and are in a happier place. I was at a school 3 years ago where a student was shot as we were leaving. That almost took me out but I landed in much better schools now.

Hey, a few things: 1) great video and story 2) ppl are realizing teaching is not a fall back/plan b career and that most jobs are easier as there are after school duties that can turn teaching into a 60-70 hr. Week. 3) even at your worst you are better than no person in that classroom - states can’t fill these teaching jobs now. 4) teaching can be rewarding and both soul sucking at the same time 5) teaching is hard whether it’s year 1, 5, 15, or 25. It’s constantly changing and you have to be adaptable to make it. Good luck.

I’m in my third year of teaching currently. I got a scholarship for all four years of college and am required to complete that many years in the field before I can walk away. As soon as I finish this next year, I’m walking away from this career for good. Lack of parent and admin support, kids not respecting me, and making such little money have been the biggest factors for sure. My mental health has been absolutely destroyed this current year with all of the responsibilities piling up. I totally relate with the stress and anxiety. It’s just not worth it and can’t even enjoy time off. Also COVID has absolutely had a huge effect on these kids even years later. These kids lack basic skills they should’ve learned already. The phones are also destroying these kids’ minds. So yeah, just trying my best to get through it as positively as I can but it’s been very challenging. They really don’t tell you about ANY of this stuff behind the scenes at schools. I can’t wait to be done

Dropped my teaching program after a semester. I know you said not to let videos like yours discourage us, but after experiencing the shift in student behavior first hand through student teaching, I knew that it wouldn’t be worth my time.

I just decided to pull the trigger on wanting to become a teacher but do you feel that Elementary school might be easier just because kids are, still kids and not grown up yet, maybe more fun and enjoyable things to do, ect. This isn’t discouraging, but all you said was something to ofocrse think about. Are schools the same all around?

My only quibble with what you are saying would be to criticize your statement that you’re not trying to “discourage” people from entering teaching. In reality, people should be discouraged from wasting their time on teaching school. That is because teaching has become an objectively bad career choice and to the extent that it is no longer a suitable position for anyone with a four year college degree. I could see teaching being all right perhaps for people with 2 year degrees in child care were they hired to supervise and tutor open entry/open exist online students in a brick and mortar setting where no actual planning or grading was called for, as I believe should be the direction in which the schools need to be going. The fact is no one wants to pay teachers what they deserve so that job should be off the table for future consideration by those who haven’t yet committed to it. Since teaching is really little more than babysitting then it should be re-engineered so that the workers are actually babysitters and not professionals who are getting the shaft on a continual and ongoing basis ad nauseam ad infinitum.
@byBriannaStone

Okay let me stop you right there because you lost me at comparing teaching to babysitting…
@byBriannaStone
@byBriannaStone 8 ай бұрын
It definitely is not and requires a 4 year college education because you are quite literally teaching and educating children… A certified teacher is not the same as a baby sitter or a tutor…..

You’ve completely missed my point. I taught for seven years and have a bachelor’s degree and was certified as a high school teacher. But the system has become so degraded that teaching is no longer reasonable work for a college graduate. Originally elementary teachers only attended normal school for two years. The system will regress then possibly collapse and you won’t be able to get degreed people to bother with teaching anymore. And yes, teachers even today are mostly baby-sitters. If you can’t see that then you’re out of touch with reality.@@byBriannaStone
@marcmeinzer8859
@marcmeinzer8859 8 ай бұрын
That’s really all it is. When it becomes impossible to get rid of kids who’ve been socially promoted and cannot behave reasonably then by definition that’s all it is. The present system is now collapsing in on itself. To substitute teach where I live you currently only need have a GED.@@byBriannaStone
