This was so great to hear about your past! THAT IS SO COOL. I went to Uni for Computer Science - funny that you can go from science/math based programs to art 😂 perhaps it's a matter of needing to get out of logic and the headache of technical stuff just be creative for once! I completely admire you for turning this into your career Kirsty, I admire your work as an artist too, this piece is beautiful!

This is super encouraging to hear thank you. I am in a position similar to where you started. I have less than a year left in college but I literally started this because I could not think of anything I actually wanted to do. I just started learning to do art 4 months ago and I absolutely love it. I have discovered my passion but I have been feeling like it is too late as I am 27 and just starting to learn. This has given me the encouragement to believe that someday I will be able to make art as a career. Even if I can't turn this into a career I want to continue it as something I really love.

Haha interestingly I have a biomedical sciences degree and am about to get my PhD degree but honestly I don't enjoy it at all. I liked my undergrad degree and did it well which was why I decided to do research. What a big mistake! I have been miserable through it all and I almost quit my PhD but I thought I should finish it anyway. I want to be an artist too, I'm more into design and fashion, both of which are completely different from what I'm doing. I think I'll pursue similar things afterwards. It's nice to know you came from a similar background. I subscribed to you when you had thousands of subs, it's nice to see you grow this big this soon! Good luck!

mengm oh man. as a high school student i'm afraid of committing to anything but if i commit to nothing then where do I go? I want to do art/animation but my parents don't feel confident I can do it & want me to do something like my sister -- engineering. but if I go in that direction will i waste time, effort, energy, and stress on something I don't enjoy & won't stick to? Is security in a job worth it if I'm unhappy in that job? Why should I do something just because I'm good at it, who do I owe it to? What's the likelihood of me going nowhere because I decided to go in the art direction & disappointing everyone?? sorry i'm spilling my guts to you, random person on the internet, but i'm feeling really stressed out at the moment so i'm just. letting it out on this comment lmao help

You are still so young!! You shouldn't really be thinking about this hahaha. When I was your age all I really cared about was how to have fun in uni when I go there. So few people know what they really want with their life in their teens, those rare ones who know become successful in what they do early in their life and those who don't, which are the majority of us need to go through life trying different things to figure out, that's just it. Maybe you need to ask yourself how much you love art and whether your artworks have already generated attentions or whether it is just a hobby. As to what subject to choose to study at uni, I think it has to be something that at least interests you. I genuinely thought I wanted to become a scientist when I chose my undergraduate degree, even if it didn't work out as I wanted, at least I enjoyed studying what I studied back then. It was only mid-way in my PhD degree that I realized scientific research was hardly rewarding even with the massive amount of work I put in. The sense of accomplishment was so little I started to realize it was not worth it. But I will never know that if I didn't try. If you like art enough that you are sure you won't get tired of it easily, try to convince your parents with your work, dedication and determination. If I were your parents but you cannot provide any evidence showing you are serious about this then I wouldn't agree with your choice either. But like I said, you are still so young, you don't need to think so much!!!

omg this is literally me, I'm in my second year of biomed and my parents quite want me to have a stable 'normal' ish job even though they kind of support me pursuing arts because they see potential...but right now tbh all I want is to go straight into art after I graduate :( It's hard to talk about wanting to do art full time because I feel like most people don't know anything about it and just think that you'll either be world famous or starving.

i have so much anxiety about this... I'm in AP & honors classes & I've always been good at academics involving english, math, science, history... but I don't even like it. I just want to do art/animation & I feel like I'm letting everyone down because they expect me, the "smart one", to do something like engineering or law. they think i'm wasting my potential. but I don't want to be unhappy in a job just because I'm good at it. I know if I work hard enough I can be an animator but it's going to be difficult without support. it's hard for me to admit my ambition to people and especially to my parents & teachers, & i'm so scared that if I do go for it I'm going to fail & the only thing I'll get out of my efforts is an "I told you so."

I think when try to find something you like, you gotta be selfish about it. They might hurt you without notice just because they want you to do what they want. I want to become an Animator/Ilustrador so we are in the same path. What I will do is get an avarege job and maybe getting support from someone you know to stay at his/her house. But you have to know it will take time, the best thing to start is atleast do 1000 pages of doodle (try to do the pages you can) and put your own rules. You should check out "Dynamic Sketch 2- Peter Han", it helped me a lot.

Kirsty, what would be really good is if you could publish a book similar to the 'RHS Flowers Watercolour Art Pad', but for portraits. The RHS book has beautifully printed photos to copy from and the watercolour paper has the line-art printed so very lightly. I am terrible at portraits so I'd like a book with lots of graded exercises on individual features then some full faces to complete. There is nothing similar out there that I have found. One on animals would also be good.

Wow. That was wholesome and inspirational! Is it too coincidental that I myself would be applying for uni (in biotech) by March 2020 and...I don't know if that's what I really wanna do. I lean so dang much towards art and writing, but as you said, these carreer options always seem too far fetched, hence remain the road not taken. But after the example you've set, I might as well reconsider.. Btw I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your art and tutorials! They've helped me take my skills to another level! Keep up the good work!😀

Thank you for this video. It's encouraging to me since I feel like you did back then I guess. A bit miserable and like I'm in the wrong place in my life. I have always wanted to do art. But I have never really gone for it. Since... everyone told me I can't live on it and I need a "real" job for the money and I can have art as a hobby. This led me down a path where I almost stopped drawing all together. But lately I've been thinking more and more that I need to do art to feel alive again. So been thinking about that quite a lot. But I'm unsure of it still. Like, I'm afraid of not making it and just losing my job. :/ Anyway, it was encouraging to hear your story. :)

This video was so inspirational to me, because i've been feeling kinda split about my carreer choice and very frustrated for not having succeeded well in any of my areas of interest. I'm a second year undergrad physics student and i want to be a teacher. Also, I'm currently trying harder to develop my art and drawing skills because I'm finally persuing my all time dream of being an artist. Although I still love physics and my course in uni, I'm struggling to have a first job because I don't have much professional experience in my CV. A few days ago I didn't get my CV approved for a paid internship in a school in my city, and it really dragged me down, i was very disappointed at myself. But hearing about your story got me inspirated to look for some changes and not to be afraid of trying new stuff. I don't need to work on a certain thing to be successful. I can make my own path and that's what matters. Though I don't think about quitting physics uni, I feel kinda determined to take my art studies more seriously and follow my interests fearlessly.

I really love the artwork! The colours are amazing! Could you please tell me what the white is that you use on top of everything? Paint? A pen or pencil? And how can you put big amounts of paint (?) on the paper and be able to just wipe it off again? Loving your videos, hope you'll continue making them for a long time! :)
