I'm pretty sure "Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans" is his actual battle theme. It doesn't play because, well, there's no way to fight Sans on the pacifist/neutral route and on the genocide, Megalovania is a theme that represents the player (hence the name). So I don't think you can call it scraped, it's more like a joke or maybe even like a part of the lore, since every major monster has to have an overworld and a battle theme attached to them.

I completely agree with this, not tryna plug my own tierlist, but I do like looking at STMPWYFS as Sans' battle theme and MEGALOVANIA as the boss theme for the player during the Genocide route that is initiated by the player fighting Sans. I mean, even the name 'megalovania' is a play on the word megalomania or megalomaniac, which is a word defined as a person who is obsessed with their own power, just like the player in the Genocide route.

i replayed undertale recently and man "his theme" still really gets me, even more than it did the first time i played the game. I really do feel like with the passing of time asriel as a character just gets more and more relatable and real, especially with that song basically being a representation of his suffering. poor asriel :(

I personally have a few theories to do with Song that might play when you fight Sans and why it was scrapped but still remains on the ost album. 1 is that when Toby was making the game there was going to be a mechanic that during San's fight you had an extremely low chance to get this theme instead of Megalovania (like a shiny pokemon) but was scrapped due to the fact that it doesn't fit the moment at all. The name would allude to the fact that this song may, albeit with a very low chance, play when fighting Sans. 2 is that Sans was originally meant to have a fight outside the genocide route (maybe through normal neutral/pacifist, maybe through Hard Mode) and this is the silly theme for what would likely be a silly fight. This is probably more likely than 1 and has the name of the song make the player question why this song "might" play when you fight Sans, as a nod to the genocide route that most players would not know about on their first run. 3 is that Sans is a very meta character and is supposed to fight you in the laws of the game, but simply cannot be bothered. He has a fight theme written and everything, but he doesn't do what he's supposed to do and it never plays. This is my personal favourite theory, as it perfectly fits Sans as a character and is absolutely something he would do. This makes it seem like the original title was "Song that plays when you fight Sans", but is now "might" because it never actually happens.

I kinda thought that the name more meant that it was a prototype. I know MEGALOVANIA predates it most likeley from the version of it in the halloween hack, but maybe toby created it as a prototype theme for the sans fight, but as you say, it didn't fit the tone and it got scrapped in favor of MEGALOVANIA. Great video man! Fun fact: A large portion of the songs from the soundtrack are pitched different than they are in-game. Some are obvious like the game over theme, premonition, and chill. Others are pretty subtle like death by glamour, snowy, and my favorite, respite. Respite because something about the pitch being higher in the soundtrack makes the "F" note really harsh for some reason. It's the second and fifth note in the song. I think all of the songs sound better in game.

@@korova7097 I'm no music tech guy but I think it's because the game reads the music differently than like spotify, and trying to replicate it would result in a loss in fidelity. Just a wild guess tho. Most of the time it's a slight change in pitch or timbre that most wouldn't even notice (Unless you are cursed with perfect pitch like I am). It also makes playing the game a bit more special in that regard.

To me Death By Glamour was by far the most obvious one, maybe it’s because I’ve listened to the damn thing on Spotify so many times but when I replayed the game recently I could immediately hear the slight pitch shift and I felt like I was being messed with by someone.

My personal favorite song in the soundtrack has and always will be spiderdance. Followed closely by Another Medium, Core, Battle against a True Hero, Undertale, and Fallen Down (reprise). Honorable mentions go to Hopes and Dreams, and Save the World. Side note: I also cry everytime I hear Undertale. The first time seeing this scene might be a core gaming memory. Finale is genuinely one of my top 5 songs in this soundtrack, and it's all because of that tiny nod to Asriel around the middle of the song, it's really clever because at that point in the game if it's your first playthrough, you don't know the relevance of that, so you don't even notice it, but once you go back, you finally hear it and everything falls into place. I started to tear up when you were talking about what Undertale, its titular song, and its soundtrack as a whole represents. The amount of growth I've gone through since Undertale's release back in 2015 is so emotional and nostalgic to look back on. Undertale got me through the hardest part of my life. I don't think that I'd be creating music today without its influence on my youth, hell I'm not even sure if I'd still be here without it. I got through this whole video fine (mostly, Undertale always chokes me up) until the first notes of His Theme started and I started sobbing. I was very late to the Undertale hype, 21yrs old and had a chaotic few years prior, and this entire soundtrack is one of few OST's thay make me feel this much. I named my cat Asriel (cause he's a tiny baby but also an asshole sometimes, which is like his flowey side lmao) only about a month after I finished my first playthrough. I was there when he was born, to a feral who shouldn't have been able to have kittens. 2 months later I had to move and he was the only thing I really had. He turns 4 this December, and every time I hear Asriel's motif it gets me right in my soul.

This was recommended to me after I listened to the Undertale Yellow soundtrack. An hour and many reviews later, I now wonder what you'd think of those 18 songs. It was one of those "Let's make a game for a different soul!" kind of games that is weirdly still being made as of December 2022. Shows promise and the demo is good for an alternate universe where you play as Justice instead. Oh, and only 17 of the tracks are on the official set list here. Great video! The one thing I will fight you to the death over is that you did Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans dirty by assuming it was scrapped - given the title, I think it was never made with the intent of being in the game. The way I see it, it's here as an alternative to Megalovania if you had fought Sans on a non-Genocide route - it's placed, OST-wise, in the spot between Undertale and The Choice, implying it'd play between the long corridor and Sans confronting you. The way I see it, it's meant to imply "this is what sans's theme would've sounded like in-battle, but he's not going to fight you". And honestly, compared to the rest of the video, it feels pretty disingenuous to rank it poorly due to the context. Other than that, I mostly agree with you points - great watch!

This was very enjoyable to watch and listen, specifically the entry of Undertale as I also have a lot of emotions surrounding this song as well Undertale too me personally feels like the lasting impression or the echo of your time in the underground controlling frisk and helping them through this wondrous yet dangerous place with your help frisk finds new friends a new family and maybe even a new home and you where there right beside them when Undertale plays you can't help but remember that time you spent making those new friends who feel real to you, it feels like a promise to always be there to help you as you had helped them even in your darkest hours

I love the video so much and I relate to your connection to the game so much. But I could not disagree more on ASGORE as a song. I’ve always thought that both the song and the character have been criminally underrated and overlooked. Not only is the song strong and booming and amazing (I’m not good at analysis leave me alone), but the use of Toriel’s motif grips my heartstrings. You can feel his heartache and his obligation. His pain and his duty. I couldn’t love it more. S-tier for me.

Replaying it brought back so much nostalgia and slight terror as I know how long I may or may not be getting the shit beat out of me by Sans again. I haven’t actually subscribed to someone in a long time, but man of course it’s an undertale video that gets me to do it. My cry baby butt cried 2 times in this video. This is great and well done and while I disagree with some of the song placements, as someone who has very strong memories of the game (I played the thing like 30 times and it was a birthday gift from my brother hidden in a bunch of folders in a sans esc joke) it’s interesting to see the opinion of someone who doesn’t. Great job and you definitely have a new subscriber. (I’m probably gonna even pester my friends who also loved undertale to watch this.) :) I hope you get all the attention and credit you deserve!

In case you didn’t know, Undertale has a few unused tracks that can still be found. My personal favourite of the unused tracks is Star, it was originally meant to play against madjick in the CORE i’m pretty sure, but it was cut because it messed with the background music
