If I'm not mistaken, Ody is Hermes great-grandson so, yes, he helps mortals just because, but he has a soft spot for Odysseus, the kiss he gave him was basically a "good luck there my boy, don't disappoint me 😊"

Let’s goooo more epic. To be fair to Eurylochus he didn’t know if the crew could be turned back. From his perspective they would be risking their lives to get some pigs back, only to give to their families and tell them that the pig is their husband/father/son lol
@E_Legend023 күн бұрын
That makes a lot of sense. That would be too cruel for their families to see them being turned into pigs 😭

Circe is a child of Helios, the god of the sun, and Perse, an ocean nymph, that made her part of a lineage of powerful sorcerers. She is an Ex-Girlfriend of Hermes thats why he helps Ody to fight her (also Hermes is a great-grandpa of Odysseus on his mothers side). Edit: Hermes is a God of trade, wealth, luck, fertility, animal husbandry, sleep, language, thieves, and travel.

to be honest he doesn't help him for beef with ex, he tends to help heroes because he likes to see what he does with his help
@E_Legend023 күн бұрын
Ty for the comment 🙏. That makes so much sense! I didn’t know the gods could be related by family blood and Hermes being Odys great grandpa. I thought the gods had their own families and other races reach out to get support/backing from them.

@@E_Legend02 There a ton of demigod heros in greek mythology. Point a finger at any Greek King and sure enough he has godly grandpa or grandma

@@E_Legend02 most of the ancient Greeks believed all the gods and other deities (Titans, Nymphs, etc) were related. All birthed from Chaos. Zeus is both Hera’s husband and brother lol

Never heard of Hermes being a god of sleep. I thought that was Hypnos.

Hermes doesn't expect anything in return, dude is kinda just an agent of chaos that likes to give morals shit they shouldnt have to see what happens

Sorry to post two info dumps lol. Circe is actually a rather “weak” goddess. Gods can have multiple domains for example Poseidon is the god of the ocean, storms, earthquakes and horses. Most gods have abilities unrelated to their domains too
@E_Legend023 күн бұрын
It’s all good 🙏. That makes so much sense for each God to have multiple powers and even powers outside of their domain.

actually trap of Circe is very hard to notice because by standarts of ancient greece you are expected to very hospitable, especially tohse who are hungry and got nowhere to stay. So her having that much meal and large place soldiers can assume "damn what a nice person" easly by the way here if fun thing you might have missed related to cyclops saga: Until "remember me" we never heard name of Odysseus

God I love the Circe Saga. Puppeteer: I love the call and response in this song between Eury and Circe. It makes for an interesting tone for that’s different from most the others. Gigi’s animatic is also just… so gorgeous. I love their design for Circe. That full 360 shot while swapping between characters? So freakin good. Wouldn’t You Like: A very catchy song, and again something we haven’t quite heard from the musical yet. So the reason Hermes’ design has shaded eyes is because his singer is always wearing shades/sunglasses. At least to my understanding. It also just helps give off that trickster vibe where you’re not really sure what he’s after. Also, Hermes is Ody’s great grandfather. So that’s a fun tidbit. Done For: Dude the flow for this song is so good. I love the approach that Circe and Ody want the same thing, to protect the people they care about: Ody with his men and Circe with her nymphs. There Are Other Ways: Ugh, I absolutely love Gigi’s animatic for this song! I love all the little character details they put in. How Circe undoes and re-ties her hair, how she circles Ody, how the nymphs are weary when they see Ody but relax when Circe assures them it’s okay. The way the color palette changes when she mentions the Underworld, and the animation for the smoke, how it’s all sketchy looking. God, I could gush about this animatic forever. Again, I also just love this Circe design. She’s kind of has a lion motif happening. It’s really neat. The little drawing at the end card with Ody missing his wife and Circe just looking so done. It’s so cute and funny. And then about the song itself, that finally riff Talya Sindel (Circe) just belts out is everything to me. On top of them bringing Puppeteer back in? Someone sedate me. Also just how you hear Penelope’s little motif after Ody breaks free of Circe’s spell, letting you know before he says anything how he was able to resist. He just loves his wife so much and for a second there it almost turns into a venting session for Ody in which Circe is just like “what is happening?” But it’s Ody’s loyalty to his wife and the showing that he’s different than the men Circe has dealt with in the past (the ones that are implied to have taken advantage of- to put it lightly - her and her nymphs) that ultimately changes her mind and why she decides to help. I love this saga so much. Next saga is the last of Act 1. We’re almost halfway through this musical. See you there.

Circe wants to send Odysseus and his crew to the Underworld, yeah, THAT underworld, to meet a powerful, dead prophet that may be able to tell them how to get home. She can't do it, but she is referring them to someone who might be able to. It's really hard to avoid Poseidon when your main mode of transportation is a boat 😅

Gods can have many different domains. To name a few, Zeus is the god of Thunder, judgement, and honor, Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war, Poseidon is the God of the sea, earthquakes, and horses, and Hermes is the god of thieves, merchants, and travellers (and is also the messenger of the Olympians). Also, a detail not many notice in the There Are Other Ways animation is that, when the men are fleeing the palace, there's a brief moment where you can see someone up on the roof. That's a little Easter egg that also has some importance in the next song :)

The reason why Odysseus' men were not shocked by Circe's welcome is simple: in ancient Greece, the rules of hospitality were taken very seriously. A guest was treated with respect and given everything, because sometimes the gods came disguised as mortals to Earth. To avoid annoying one and attracting his wrath by not being sufficiently welcoming, all travelers were treated well, in case one of them was a god.
@stiletteleray13262 күн бұрын
I think your concept of the “gods having 1 domain” relates more to primordial gods who ruled before the Olympian Gods. The primordial gods often represented a single concept because they were meant to represent nature where as the “Olympian gods” represent humanity and a sense of being instead of a pure essence so they are more complex than primordial gods.
@angryamber87112 күн бұрын
At one point you asked why Circe and Hermes (or other rival gods) didn’t “duke it out personally” - and the answer to that is because, generally, the gods prefer to get mortals to do their bidding instead of dirtying their own hands with violence or hard work.

Here are some gods you might encounter in Epic : - Zeus : king of gods, god of thunder, justice, and sky (his animal is the eagle) - Athena : goddess of wisdow and strategy (her animal is the owl) - Poseidon : god of oceans and seas, father of the horses (he created them) - Hermes : god of travelers, merchants, thieves, and messenger of Zeus. He's helping heroes in many myths. - Helios : he is not a god but a titan (he was there before the gods) and was the titan of the Sun (his twin Selene was the titanide of the Moon). - Apollo : god of sun (he took Helios' role), music, light, arts in general, and prophecies. - Hephaestus: god of forge and tools. - Aphrodite : goddess of love and desire, she's the wife of Hephaestus (arranged marriage, she hates him in most myths). - Ares : god of war and weapons, he is the lover of Aphrodite. His animal is the wild boar. - Hera : Queen of the gods, sister and wife of Zeus (no genetics among the gods so everyone marries everyone). She is the goddess of marriage, fertility and women. Zeus keeps cheating on her with goddesses and mortals alike (the demigods are often his children). There are many others, even among the Olympians. There are 12, 13 or 14 depending on how you look at it: Zeus, Hera, Ares, Hephaestus, Hermes, Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Artemis, Poseidon, Apollo and Dionysus. 13 if we add Hades, god of the dead and the Underworld, and 14 with Hestia, goddess of the hearth and family, who are a little apart. But there are hundreds of minor gods, the best known of which are Nemesis (revenge), Hypnos (sleep), his son Morpheus (dreams), Thanatos (death), Hecate (magic, ghosts), Asteria (nocturnal oracles), Aletheia (truth), Asclepius (medicine), and many others.

by the way hermes is not "triyng to be sly" or have beef with her... he just loves randomly helping mortals for fun. "Hey, I wonder what would happen if I gave this extremly powerful object to this mortal and directed them toward this location" and he watches it. He is god of Messengers and Thiefs... He delivers... he delivered the plant :D

Gods generally have many abilities just by being gods. That’s why most can shapeshift. Most have multiple domains as well which can give other abilities. For example, Poseidon is god of the seas, storms, the earthshaker, father of horses, etc.

The men had no reason to suspect Circe's trap because, in ancient Greece, you were expected to be a good host Hospitality is one of the things Zeus is god of, so if you're a bad host, you're angering the king of the gods And that's NOT something you wanted to do Also, Hermes was supposed to be sent to help by Athena

Yeah... technically speaking, in the Odyssy, Circe wasn't still regarded as a goddess... She was a powerful sorceress, daughter of powerful beings, while in latter myths she is gonna be acknowledge as a minor goddess. Anyway her domain, mythologically, is always magic. Hermes is the "God Messanger", he was in charge to send messages from the Gods to the men (but yeah, the comments are true, Gods have multiple domains); he was the protector of outcasts, thief, wanderers and travellers... basically anyone that didn't have a society to protect them. That might also be a theory of why he decides to help Odysseus.
@philipliao40062 күн бұрын
On the subject of Circe, she turned Odysseus's men into pigs because as she says, that is their "true form". She believes that all men are pigs that only want one thing, which is why she also tried to use this to tempt Odysseus in "There Are Other Ways", believing he would be just like every other man.

As I'm sure you've noticed by now, the Greek gods are a chaotic bunch. Going by a lot of Greek mythology, pretty much all of them suck, just to varying degrees. Hermes is probably among the most agreeable of them all, prone to just helping mortals for funsies. A lot of media involving depictions of the gods generally go the route of having a handful of them be assholes, and some others being more on the benevolent side, just for the sake of variety. Though Jorge definitely wanted to channel some of the...pettier behavior of the gods. Which admittedly does make them more entertaining lol. Looking forward to the rest of your reactions!
