I'm reading "Ninth Street Women" about 5 women artists from 1940-1970 in New York, including Elaine de Kooning + Lee Krasner Pollock. It's absolutely fascinating. The backdrop of WWII and the affects of the war and the bombings in Japan on the global art world is especially well portrayed. I've also recently read: "Mrs Dalloway and the "Picture of Dorian Gray." I'm currently working my way through the Shakespeare Sonnets, one per day, and the poetry of Walt Whitman and Billy Collins, both of whom I adore.

One hundred years of solitude, the importance of being earnest and Malibu rising are my favourite from August! Planning on reading Anna Karenina soon on your recommendation (ok well actually gonna read Don Quixote and The Three Musketeers first but then I’m going to get round to it!) I’ve been inspired to finally tackle some of the big books on my shelf over the next few months after watching your recent videos. Anyway hope you have a lovely September with lots of good atmospheric reads :)

Great video ... Phew, I need to get back to Chekhov--it's been a while.

Have you read Saunders’ A Swim in the Pond in the Rain? It’s like a masterclass in Chekhov’s stories (and short stories in general), he often goes page by page discussing them. I got so much out of it, and appreciated the stories so much more.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on "Uncle Vanya" adaptation (if it's the one with Richard Armitage and Toby Jones - it's my favourite)! I read first two books of Elena Ferrante's "Neapolitan Quartet" ("My Brilliant Friend" and "The Story of a New Name") - both amazing, can't wait to continue reading them! Have you ever read any of Ferrante's books? 😊

I read "Neapolitan Quartet" in June/July and couldn't put it done. Ferrante has a writing style that just makes you become addicted lol.

I started "The People Immortal" by Vasily Grossman in late August. A short book of 300 pages by his standards, his previous two books which led on from each other were 1900 pages. An ideal book for Russian literature buffs, and relatively modern, written in serial form originally in 1942. With what is going on at the moment this book is a timely reminder of what has gone before.

Carolyn, if you ever are in Boston, you should pop into the Brattle and introduce yourself to Zac. He knows so much about books and can keep an eye out for books you might like. A good book friend to have. And if you see some homeless looking big blonde guy, hanging about, it is probably Steve Donoghue...just ignore him.
