If you like dragons and magic and real relationships, you NEED to read Christopher Paolini's Eargon series. Sooooooooo much better than 4th Wing. I too, struggled with 4th Wing. There was so much unneeded bad language, and the mother daughter relationship was so hateful & unhealthy - I just couldn't. I only read maybe 50 pages and stopped. I almost never DNF, but the bad language was so irritating and distracting it wasn't worth my time. I really appreciate your honest review. Books should be enjoyed, and I did not enjoy this. I really wanted to. So many people buy, read, and love a book because it's popular and not for the story, plot, or writing itself. My opinion is not popular. That's ok. 📚

Funny how books work… I started with ACOTAR and rolled my eyes so many times, cringed a little at the 500-yo fae characters ;) then I picked fourth wing and loved it, found it so much lighter and entertaining than ACOTAR! Although I admit wayy too long … Haha 😂 beauty of books and how they work differently for each of us! 😍 One piece of advice; take a break (a real one) from fantasy then when ready pick up six of crows 🙌🏻 best fantasy series I’ve ever read 👌🏻 worth 100 ACOTAR and fourth wing 😉

I agree it makes it more interesting that we all resonate with different things! I am so excited about six of crows. But you’re right, I think I’m going to wait until autumn and just stick with rom com/ fun beach reads for the summer and then dive into fantasy and thriller from sept onwards! ❤️❤️

Hi Ellen! Glad to see your review of Fourth Wing was quite similar to mine, though the writing style was just not doing it for me! For some reason, I had to read multiple sentences at least 5 times to understand it or maybe it was just hard for me to get through - specifically at the beginning of the book from what I remember (just a bunch of run-on sentences). I'm excited to see you start suspense/thriller soon :) Would you be willing to share your Goodreads account so we book nerds/lovers can connect? I've curated mine since 2011! Also, please keep sharing these book vlogs here - I love long form content (as I don't want to fall into the TikTok hole hehe).

Once again I totally agree with your review! I absolutely loved the dragons and their personalities, but I had the same issues that you did with much of the content of both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. The books are total page turners though and I flew through them and will definitely be reading the rest of the series. Keep the book reviews coming - love them!

I totally agree with a lot of your views on Fourth Wing. I really loved the dragons, Rhiannon and Xaden, but Violet annoyed me so much - especially her incessant inner monologue. I just wanted to say that this was incorrectly deemed 'enemies to lovers' by BookTok, but the author confirmed it's actually 'forced proximity'
@ellenalicemiller4 ай бұрын
I totally agree! And interesting she said it’s actually forced proximity, I guess that makes sense! ❤️

@@ellenalicemiller I think once I realised they were never enemies and read Iron Flame, their romance made a lot more sense! Violet does have a lot more character development in IF and Xaddy is just so great in IF

I kind of agree with you! I really liked the story and the dragons, but the writing style kind of bugged me. But because this was my starter book after a long time of not reading, it holds a special place in my heart and I still really want to read the sequel. But I find myself postponing it 🫣 I think because after reading books like acotar I’m afraid I will be bothered by the writing too much.

I love how people have different reactions to books. Your reviews are very fair. I started Fourth Wing but gave up on it early on & that's fine - just not for me. Just finished the new Emily Henry & really enjoyed it - not perfect but love her dialogue - really witty. Enjoying your reading vlogs & how much you're enjoying getting absorbed in a book.

I want to recommend (if you haven't read it already) The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox. It's magical, but not full on fantasy, and it's a sweet romance but not too spicy. And it has a small map! It's a nice easy read and maybe better for the fall or winter for the right ~vibes.

Ah thank you for the recommendation! I’ll add it to the list 🥰

Ah I am only just starting ACOTAR and read Fourth Wing first which I absolutely LOVED! I’ve recently found you on here and resonate a lot with your background (corporate jump etc.) and really enjoying following along. Also chai + coffee is a very good thing and = ‘dirty chai’ ☕️😄

Hi! 👋🏼❤️ and omg is that what a dirty chai is! 😂 I hear people say that sometimes but had no idea ❤️

SO funny. I read fourth wing/ iron flame right before ACOTAR, and then entire time I was just wishing Rhys was Xaden.

Ellen this is the coziest and inspiring vlog I’ve ever watched! I didn’t realize that watching someone’s reading would be fascinating! 😍 You’ve also inspired me to buy a printed book instead of my PocketBook to enjoy my reading. Thank you!

With the theme of dragons and magic derived from them, it also gives off Eragon vibes 😄

Thank you for the review Ellen!! I'm currently reading Heir of Fire (and have already read Assassins Blade) and I'm LOVING the series!! I'll probably give Fourth Wing a try after I finish Throne of Glass and Crescent City.... so I still have a lot to read first hahaha.
@ellenalicemiller4 ай бұрын
Ah I love that you’re loving throne of glass!! It’s the best 😭 I’d give it a bit of a break before going to fourth wing after you finish SJM, just to give it a fair shot!❤️

It is very true that as some series develop they grow on you. I almost gave up on the first Acotar book because it just felt like copy of Beauty and the Beast and that was all I could think while reading it but from the second one it comes into its own so much more and I really started enjoying them from then on! I've read similar reviews of Fourth Wing as yours so I might not pick it up immediately but maybe in the future...:)
@ellenalicemiller4 ай бұрын
I think it’s definitely worth having a break between ACOTAR and fourth wing. And so many people really really love fourth wing, so you never know it might be great for you! But for me I prefer SJMs writing style ❤️

Ellen, this was a great video! I love the style of it-it’s fun to see how you make time for reading in your day, especially since that can be a struggle sometimes. Have a wonderful weekend! I’m looking forward to seeing your room makeover!❤

I completely agree about the adolescent ‘eye-roll’ moments in Fourth Wing, but I’m surprised you didn’t feel the same about Sarah J Mass’ writing. While I love her books I sometimes get the feeling she’s stuck in a very stereotypical millennial writing style. If you’re looking for something adult, and less cringe I definitely recommend Samantha Shannon’s Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night. BRILLIANT books and writing, but very complex! (Think more Game of Thrones) 🤍
