Dance of Thieves has a is actually a sequel to the Kiss of Deception trilogy if you didn’t know. It’s kinda of like a whole Shadow of Bones and Six of Crows situations. The big war happens in Kiss of Deception and the main character is Kazi’s queen. Dance of thieves is a few years in the future.

"Their nicknames had nicknames." I laughed at this because it's so true! In Russia, every name has, like, at least three different nicknames. Like an Anna can have the nicknames Anya, Anechka, Anusha, Anyuta, etc. It's kind of fun, but definitely confusing at first.

For the Bear and the nightingale,, it's deep in folklore and it seems kind of trope-y when you first read it but each book gets deeper and deeper.. it's something where you can't just read the first one you have to read the whole series. As a whole it's one of my favorites but I understand where you coming from with the first one.

Yay, I'm so happy people are finally talking about Dance of Thieves! 😁 I didn't read the Kiss of Deception series, so I had no knowledge about the world or its history, but I felt like Mary E. Pearson did a great job introducing bits and pieces of the background into these books.

Just so you know Dance of Thieves is a follow-up to Mary E Pearson's trilogy The Kiss of Deception, so that might explain some of the issues with world building! Also, re The Bear and the Nightingale, the multiple diminutives of names is a very typical Russian thing, my own name has several nicknames to go with it, but I know that in the physical books Katherine Arden has guides for how those work and also usually some other historical information - not sure if that would still be the case for e-books. I'm so excited that you're reading those books! As someone who grew up very entrenched in that folklore and practice, that series has always felt like a really thoughtful and graceful reworking of them to me, as well as an excellent reflection of Russian literature (i.e. very very slow pacing haha!)

I'm currently reading the third book in the Remnant Chronicles trilogy, which I've heard is the precursor to Dance of Thieves, so skipping away from your last review, because I don't want to be spoiled for anything! Bear in the Nightingale was slow moving, but the more I sat with it the more I was like wow, that was wonderful. The part with the priest and all the old gods/spirits was so fascinating.

When I read The bear and the nightingale I was like "holy shit are there 14 siblings?!?" Then I realized they all had like 5 nicknames and not all of them made sense. So confusing! I liked the Stalking jack the ripper series, I read it around Halloween and it was the creepy ambiance I wanted. I was disconcerted that the books unfolded over a couple weeks though. I just imagined them older than they were because there ain't no way teens going through all that and still flirty well adjusted people. The Renegade series I thought had an unrealistic ending and can't wait to hear your thoughts. The Dance of thieves duology I found okay. I liked the first one but skimmed the second after I almost DNFed after 100 pages.

Ok here are my Stalking Jack the Ripper thoughts: you said something in your last video like "I liked it, but I could not tell you why," and that's exactly how I felt about the first two. I didn't know the history so the digression the second book took didn't bother me. I read the first three in really rapid succession at the beginning of the pandemic and it was great escapism but looking back?? They were not good. I have yet to finish the fourth one even after picking it up multiple times over the last two years. By the time I reached book four I was only reading it for the romance so when that little corkscrew of Thomas-Being-Engaged-Without-Knowing-It popped up I think I legitimately threw the book down??? One of the worst possible twists imo. I also could not tell you what the plot outside the romance is in that book. Maybe I'll finish it someday but probably not. If you've read this far, Cari, thank you as always for the amazing book content! Your channels are a joy. Have fun in Europe!!

Hi Cari!! ❤I would highly, HIGHLY recommend that you - and literally everyone else - that reads Dance of Thieves first read Pearson's OTHER ya fantasy trilogy called 'The Remnant Chronicles,' which is set about 10-14 years before the Dance of Thieves duology. Way back in 2020, I really wanted to read DoT, but then when I realize that there were books that came before it, I decided to read the Remnant Chronicles first, and damn, I'm SO GLAD that I did!! I understand how reading DoT would be really jarring if you haven't already read the series that came before it... since TRC is all about the impending war, the different kingdoms in DoT, and literally everything else of importance that you need to know before - and while - you read DoT. The Queen of the Kingdom of Venda in DoT is actually the main character in the Remnant Chronicles. The Remnant Chronicles has literally one of the best, and most-twisted villains that I've ever read from a ya series. Seriously, the villian had me screaming and crying at many points throughout the series. Not to mention, the characters in TRC are super amazing; the main character, Lia, is such a #girlboss, and literally is a princess but doesn't give a shit about anything or anyone lol! And the two male leads are just, well, incredible, to say the least.😂 Also, for most of the first book in TRC ('The Kiss of Deception), Lia is working at a friend's tavern to hide from some evil people/the wedding she abandoned, back in her kingdom. She falls in love with TWO separate guys - Rafe and Kaden - but the whole time that she gets to know them, she doesn't know who they really are; since one is the prince of a neighboring kingdom that she RAN AWAY FROM just before they were about to get married, and the other is a assassin sent by the trilogy's villian to kill her. The entire book, both Lia, and you as the reader don't know who is who, and this aspect of it will literally will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Also, the romance is chef's kiss 😩 I like to argue that it's even better than DoT, and the male leads in TRC actually aren't toxic, for once. 💀 I was blown away by how much I LOVED the TRC trilogy when I read it - since I was not expecting to like it that much. Soon enough, it quickly became one of my fav series of all time! So yes, Cari, after you're done reading Vow of Thieves, I'd highly recommend that you try out the Remnant Chronicles because in my opinion, the world building, plot line, and characters are even better in the precursor trilogy! Much love from Florida~ 🥰💗

I took a small workshop class taught by Kathleen Arden (author of the bear and the nightingale)~ she’s a very kind woman! It makes sense that you felt that the book was a little bit extra fairy tale like, as she was heavily heavily inspired by Russian folklore for the entire thing, as well as the vibes! She also speaks and writes Russian~ She offered to help us all with any future writing endeavors, which I may hopefully take her up on during NaNoWriMo this year😊

I haven’t read the Jack the Ripper series but I really loved the series by Ambrose Parry starting with ‘the way of all flesh’ (idk what the series is called). It’s set in Scotland in the 1800s and is crime fiction that features some legit historical figures, most notably James Simpson, the guy who discovered chloroform. It weaves history fact with crime fiction (that’s also based on legit cases from the time) and I personally loved it. I think if you go into it knowing it’s not 100% historical crime like it’s advertised as, you’ll enjoy it way more. Also really into the relationships that develops over the series

I loved the kiss of deception but I really just red dance of thieves book for lia (the queen) and she's not really in it that much but if you read the trilogy I recommend just for the old characters that make an appearance

I completely understand how you feel about the bear and the nightingale. The first hundred pages was a lot to trudge through and I didn’t realize she was 17 until about 75%. I legit thought she was 13 during the forest cabin scenes. The second book is better because there’s more adventure and romance and court politics. I enjoyed the whole series of stalking Jack the Ripper. I do see that if they had been aged up slightly even by two years it would have seemed more realistic. I think the reason I enjoyed the series was because I felt like it was even with the murder-mystery and the romance (this series is from James Patterson’s imprint) and I had felt like Audrey Rose was multidimensional. That she wanted to study medicine to be a coroner while knowing she was still bound the rules for women of society and still wanted be feminine and act by the rules of social proprietary. I found it more refreshing because I had also read a book around the same time which is set about the same historical time period and the character had similar ambitions of studying medicine but I found the main character unlikeable and had to DNF. The dance of thieves duology is a companion series to the remnant chronicles trilogy and that’s why it might seem like there’s not a lot of world building because it’s a continuation of three other books. This series would be similar to reading once upon a broken heart and not having read the caraval series. I would recommend going back and reading the remnant chronicles.

Have you read To Best The Boys by Mary Weber? It's got the coroner/ dead body vibes like Stalking Jack the Ripper but then goes into bit of magical realism with a maze/ spooky competition. It also has a plague like Defy the Night. Anyway, I thought it was a fun book when I read it a couple of years back, and I keep thinking you might like it.

I don't normally like superhero stories, but I loved the Renegades books. The audiobooks are particularly good. The male narrator has slightly campy superhero tones to his voice, circa 1950s radio vibes. It really adds to the story and is super compelling

Hey Cari, If you are looking for book recs may I recommend Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat! It is a ya fantasy book, and I read it earlier this year. I loved it so much I made two of my roommates read it, and they both loved it too. I would highly recommend it, it has really interesting world building, really beautiful friendships, and one of the best executed plots I’ve ever read in ya. It’s also got an interesting LGBTQ+ romance! Overall, I think you would enjoy if!

I really liked Renegades but the undercover villain plot was taking me out. I don't think I like plots where someone is undercover and makes friends with the people they're investigating. Because when it's eventually exposed, the closer they were the more devasting the fallout. I have the 2nd book but I haven't started yet because I thought her identity would be revealed in book 1 and now it's like pure anxiety waiting for the reveal in book 2. I like superhero stuff though so I want to read all 3.

I read the Bear and the Nightingale back in February. I actually read on audiobook so I didn't have the whole reading experience. It was little weird to me, like vasya grows up from 8 something to 16 to when the plot actually starts, so I didn't know that 60% of the first book is her back story. I liked it (I thought I was gonna LOVE it) It's a russian mythology based fantasy and that was so different to than any fantasy book I read. But there was something missing that I can't put my finger on. So I didn't read the sequal cause of it. I'll probably read it with you now 😂 And for some reason I read wolf and the woodsman by ava reid first (because it was marketed that it's like Bear and the Nightingale and I thought I'd so love it so lemme read this anyway) it's an terrible book. Never read it. If anyone tells you to read wolf and the woodsman don't believe them. It's the worse book I've ever read.
