I respectfully disagree with much of your review. I watched the movie first as soon as it was released on streaming, and despite its flaws, really enjoyed it. I then bought the book to read, which I had avoided until I saw the movie in case there were spoilers. All this worked in my favor, because I wound up liking the movie AND the book. Despite the authors (and it's since been identified that the authors are Terry Hayes and Tammy Cohen) using the present tense throughout, a conceit that I don't much care for, I found their descriptions of details to be quite thorough. I liked that they developed a team for Argylle to work with, and only gradually did I realize that two of the team were also represented in the movie. The book held my attention and I kept coming back to finish it over a week. The relatively short chapters made it great for bathroom reading (not a knock - it's how I read a lot of books!). I think the marketers made mistakes misrepresenting both the book and the movie, and that has contributed to its poor ratings. I hope both will eventually find an audience. I doubt they'll make sequels, though I'd really like the authors to write the next book in their series so they can introduce some of the concepts that the movie brings in as it goes forward. A few corrections (did you, perchance, consume the book on audio rather than physically reading it?): - "Amber Ruin" is actually the Amber Room. - "Kofi" is actually Frances Coffey, and she is NOT in the movie; the character portrayed by Richard E. Grant is director Fowler. - "The Directory" is The Directorate (I may have misheard you on this one, but at least twice I heard you say the word "Directory" instead). I hope you don't mind my contrary opinion. Thanks for your review!

I saw the movie with my dad, not knowing what to expect (he was the one who suggested it) and it was a romp! Im not going to watch your video, as you said there are spoilers, but I'm going to read the book, even if its universally hated!😂

I liked the book a lot (it was a book club read for me and my friends) , and I generally disagree with a lot of what this creator has to say about it. Of course everyone’s opinion is their own but there’s a lot of generalizations in this review (or flat out lies ). Maybe they genuinely didn’t enjoy the book, maybe they are just hopping onto a hate train for the views… idk. But me and my book club enjoyed the book (I haven’t seen the movie yet but I do want to check it out after reading the book)

omg, reading this book sounds horrible. I just finished my first 1-star read in ages, and just the thought of reading another poorly-written book like this is too much 🥴 I saw the bad reviews for the movie (which sounds like it's better?) and then heard about the book and was curious, so thanks for making the video.

I hope the book community leaves Taylor out of it since it seems like the rumors were used as marketing for free. She could sue but probably doesn’t want the bad press from that. I think the book to screen situation was more like Pretty Little Liars in it# calculation, but they wanted to create a parasocial connection by pretending the book author was potentially really this elusive spy with amnesia.

Good point about comparing it to the PLL books. I wonder how much the book marketing affected people seeing the film.
