Hi Rod. I do appreciate this video (and all your other videos) and the intent behind it...and I wholeheartedly agree with having a good attitude and helping each other...100% agree! I would love to see you address some of the points of etiquette and respect. Everyone wants to enjoy the resources and catch fish and the river is big. Please do not crowd others and diminish the experience for everyone including yourself...especially in pocket water with short drifts. I recently experienced 9 people crowding a pocket that could be fished by 4 people...MAX...and 4 would've been crowded! I understand and agree this is here for all to enjoy but please please please, if others have gotten to a spot you want to fish before you, don't force your way in...move to either end spacing out accordingly or look for another run. Don't be a rude bully, it's disrespectful.

Thank you @fishingwithrod for this video. I'm sorry to say, but when there is no enforcement/no consequences, people get away with breaking the rules and don't care abut etiquette. The majority of anglers and fishing is done on the weekends. I have yet to see a conservation officer on the weekends. A change how enforcement occurs will help decrease the issues, and prevent disputes. Cheers!

Thank you Rod for your positive take and education on what could have gone a different way with your response. As far as fishing a crowded river bank. I got my start on a river that was crowded. Most of the people fishing there were helpful and considerate because I asked questions about etiquette and didn’t just crowd in. Most recently I started fishing a new river system and after three times fishing there a local shared how to properly fish there. What tackle to use and when in the tide is best. Respect goes a long ways! It would have taken many, many more hours of fishing without people’s help than with it.

Rod, that’s great advice in regards to reporting potential and observed violations, that way they can pinpoint areas to patrol and observe. And then, the presence of the field officers help to ward off unethical practices, I think that clarification is definitely something I haven’t heard normally broken down. Everyone can play a part, even if you aren’t a confrontational person, you can do your part. And if you don’t mind saying something to the individual(s), then do so in a gracious manner- and then leave it to them to make the right decision. Where people go wrong is they approach folks in a threatening manner, and in all reality, it just causes more issues- when they really can’t do anything but tell them the right thing. Love the videos and you have great advice man!

Hi Rod. Another excellent video with some great points. I understand that everyone wants to enjoy the resources available. What I think may be workable is to add a regulation stating you must not encroach within 3 or 4 meters of another fishermen....whatever the number is determined to be reasonable. Most people are courteous and respectful but unfortunately some are not. I personally try to avoid the crowds because that's not an enjoyable way to fish...for me. I think a minimum distance may be workable...possibly 🤔

I'm from the UK originally and one of the great benefits of Canada is the freedom to access the river and inexpensive fishing. Raising the price would shut out anglers on lower incomes and that's unfair. If you want to reduce access then look to measures in place for hunting or even traffic, any congestion based solution is worth considering to avoid making it a rich mans hobby. For busy rivers such as the Vedder, you could just stipulate that angling licenses ending on even numbers can go on even number calendar days and vice versa. An exception process could allow linked licenses so families or buddies can fish together fish together. Alternately, move north, but if you want fishing spots close to a major city then you have to expect congestion. Last point, fish abundance should determine access and angling numbers or the resource will become exhausted. edit: agree with a poster below, more fishery officers are needed for the busy rivers.

I'm from the UK also mate and lived in Canada for years and recently moved back. I actually like it in the UK more (of course not the numbers of salmon though haha) and I think that the slightly increased cost to fish a beat is worth it for the less fisherman about. I think that if you're paying for gear and gas a few quid more for a quiet river is worth it imo. Or as you say, just move north!
@denny83602 ай бұрын
Thanks for making these educational videos over the years, you've helped me get started whether it's equipment, technique or just enjoying the fishing. I have had some bad experiences on the vedder two years back when I was new to salmon fishing where I've ran into someone willing to cut my lines accusing me of using more than one hook, when I am strictly following proper set up following examples from people like you and have never used more than one hook. Now that I think about it, I had a fish on and this guy may have tangled my line with his, and he cut my line as a result and tried to blamed it on me. These "confrontational" people can be dangerous and threats were thrown around, I can see how a fight could take place with people like that on the river. Reporting violations are very different from illegal interventions, when it's not your job to over step boundaries and enforce regulations, just tell them what you see as possible bad practices, there's no reason to let out the anger on strangers. We are all out there to have a good time in nature, it helps everyone to be nice to each other.

Thanks for the video rod! Just so you know I've never blamed ya 😉 something that I would love to see is more access to other rivers the pitt the fraser ect for catch and release, or even other rivers up the canyon into region 3 why there isn't hatcheries or support for salmon numbers on those rivers is beyond me. I don't fish for meat as often as I fish for fun and relaxation or just purely a reason to be outside and busy. Opening up more opportunities would definitely help alleviate pressure on the few rivers we are allowed to fish.

My number one piece of advice is show respect to people you are fishing around. My favorite experience was fishing the Vedder and the guys below me told me to left my drift go further, even though it would pass right in front of them because I was missing too many fish. Trying to get along has resulted in some of my best days fishing. Honestly if we could produce a couple of other Vedder river fisheries, there would be more to go around. We're talking about a river with abundant runs of salmon. No boats. And the most access of any west coast river. If you want to complain, complain there isn't more opportunities like the Vedder.

@FishingwithRod2 ай бұрын
Thanks. So for the wild components (wild coho, chum etc), most of them don't in fact come into the hatchery. They usually bypass and continue on to the upper watershed and spawn in the off channels, as well as the creeks that feed into the lake. The sport fishing boundary for salmon is just downstream from the hatchery, so there's no fishing for salmon in the upper watershed and the lake.

I’ve accustomed to combat fishing here in Washington and fishing has increasingly become more popular with the younger generation, which is a good thing. I think a big part of the divide and one that I find myself getting upset about is not the crowds but how the majority of people fishing are not fishing the right way. When you have a mix of people fishing normally and then a mix of people ripping floats and snagging fish and turning the bite off while not knowing how to fish in a crowd is the problem. People who don’t know how to fish in a group or not know how to fish at all should spend time learning the right way to fish before going into a crowded spot. If there was 50 guys in a run and they were all trying to fish properly there wouldn’t be such a big problem.

I honestly feel like everyone should start their salmon fishing journey in a combat environment. It really gives you full exposure to learn etiquette and the social skills needed to better yourself as an angler. I’ve learned so much from it and it’s allowed me to be accommodating to other anglers that want to fish near me and helped me understand when and when not to cast. And also the common courtesy to reel in when someone is walking down or up river fighting a hot fish. At times as well, combat fisheries can turn into more of a communal fishery if folks are able to properly communicate and chill out.

hello Rod, always love your video. I learn a lot from your video. I have a quick question for you as I always straggle this myself when ever I go fishing. When going fishing on vedder river, how do you determined weather to go upper river (up river pass crossing) or go fishing lower river (by the cannal), Also upon arrival on the spot, what your indication weather to stay on the spot you choice or switch spot? as there are so many spot on Vedder River, sometimes its hard to decide weather to go upper Vedder river or going lower part of the river. Would you mind sharing your thought on this. thank you for you time.
@abc-df1vg2 ай бұрын
The decision whether to fish upper river or lower river is based on many factors. The type of fishing gear you're using, the species you're targeting, the time of year you are fishing, whether you want to retain fish or not, the quality of the fish you want to retain, how comfortable you are or not fishing in crowded holes, the water conditions, just to name a few factors. The general rule of difficulty of access, the more hiking you have to do to get to a spot, the less competition with other anglers. If you don't mind fishing shoulder to shoulder with other anglers the lower river is an option based on the other factors I've mentioned. Fish quality degrades with time in fresh water but different species degrade at different rates. Finding an ocean fresh, sea lice adorned chinook in the lower river is common early in the season in the lower river but extremely rare late in the season in the upper parts of the river and by upper parts I'm defining upper as above Tamahi bridge. Coho seem to degrade at a slower rate as finding bright silver coho is common in the upper river. There are too many factors that are personal to each individual angler to give an answer. You have to decide for yourself what you want from your fishing experience and then consider all of the factors I've mentioned.
@littlegoobie2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure increasing the price does much. If the fishing is good, they will pay. The only difference is that there might be a different income range of the crowds. The best example of this is where i fish in alaska. non resident licence is $100, king stamp is another $100, gear and food is 25-200% more than most places, accomodations are double, lodges average about $10K/week, charters were $300-500/day this year. This is all USD, in addition to the cost of getting there, and yet millions of people still go to the state just to fish and crowd up the fishing spots with the locals.

On the topic about the Fraser River being closed, anyone know how DFO determines whether you're "targetting" salmon or not? I know it's been closed to Salmon fishing, but not coarse / Sturgeon fishing. If I use spinners to target Northern pikeminnow and DFO checks, could they accuse me of "targeting" salmon with this method, even if I use 1/16oz spinners with tiny hooks and an ultralight rod? Heck, could they accuse me for "bar fishing for salmon" if I'm actually using a bottom rig (size 12 hooks) for Peamouth Chub / Northern Pikeminnow using dew worms?

FFSBC is not responsible for salmon fishing regulations in BC. That falls under DFO. All Salmon related issues country wide is DFO. This is coming from someone who worked for FFSBC this summer at the Vanderhoof Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Center.

There should simply be rules. In the Regs. No less than 70 feet between anglers (this is the length of approximately 10 steelhead or salmon rods, which is just one lure cast) with the exception of adults helping or teaching their children or family member, or an aide assisting the disabled. Problem solved.

I still don't understand how people can have a bad time on the river. Here in Michigan we shouldn't even have salmon. Meet a lot of hot headed fishermen last week on the river complaining about how there's too many people nowadays. Funny how DNR doesn't have a problem with the number of fisherman. I'd say if you follow the regulations and have common sense then come fish right by me! I'll need someone to net my fish! Lol
@sc100ott2 ай бұрын
I’m also in Michigan and really dislike crowds. There are plenty of places to go to avoid the crowds. Sure, you may not have stacks of fish just like at the foot of a dam, but there are lots of holes which still hold fish if you’re just a little observant and willing to move to a smaller stream, or just move a few hundred yards downstream.

Putting a slot size limit on fish is not the best . The "one and done" system might be better.CHEERS from SOOKE
@FishingwithRod2 ай бұрын
There isn't exactly a slot size limit on chinook salmon in freshwater , I should have been a little clearer on that part. You can keep chinook salmon of any size (as long as it is above the minimum size which all returning fish are), and there is a daily limit of adults and jacks (eg. four chinook salmon allowed per day on the Chilliwack River, but only two of them can be over 62cm long). Also, "One and done" is needed for sure, it'd eliminate a lot of the crowding issues in rivers.

You're wrong about floats and lures not being able to fish together. It just has to be on a run with a good enough flow to swing the lures and they can fish at the exact same tempo as the float guys.

I’ve generalized a bit in the video of course. I in fact will fish my spoon while other drift floats around me, but I have to be really conscious about what others are doing otherwise it’d turn into a circus pretty fast. 🤣 I think this would be really hard to do for someone who is new into it.

Unfortunately Rod, We have been told by DFO officers numerous times that flossing and ripping are completely fine, but keeping snagged fish is not. This happened at least 4 times in my presence at the vedder and it only emboldened those who were constantly ripping around us. In fact in a couple of occasions they started laughing and taunting us that were complaining to the DFO officers.
@FishingwithRod2 ай бұрын
Hmm that's not exactly correct, not sure which officers would be saying that but intentionally foul hooking fish is a violation that is constantly on their radar and being discussed in our communication regularly.
@areyyyyyyy2 ай бұрын
@@FishingwithRod that's what I thought, but as I said this happened on 4 occasions with what I would assume different officers. They told us that unless they had observed them keeping snagged fish then there is nothing they can do about it. The officers argued that we cannot prove that they were intentionally trying to foul hook fish and flossing is not an illegal activity. I was quite frustrated, but in all those occasions I managed to catch my limit "the ethical way" right next to those "fishermen." Perhaps this would be something you could have a direct communication about with DFO management? I'm sure we would appreciate a solid clarification on this matter.

Is flossing illegal in your guy's area? What do the regulations say about it? It's been a really popular way to fish for salmon in my area and they recently tried to put an end to it, by changing the law to leader length being a maximum of 6ft.
@sc100ott2 ай бұрын
Flossing is legal and very common here in Michigan. Frankly, it is very hard for a conservation officer to tell a flossed fish from a legitimate take, unless he’s literally standing next to the fishermen, so any sort of ban in that regard would be pretty much impossible to enforce anyway. The general consensus among fishermen is probably more important than the actual law, and since there is very little sentiment against flossing in general, it is generally considered “OK”, even if some people look down on it. I’m kinda surprised how many fishermen don’t actually realize that they just flossed a fish, and it didn’t matter a bit that their fly was a particular shade of orange-they actually believed they enticed the fish to “bite”.😂😢 Michigan is also different in that it is very common and generally accepted to fish to spawning fish on redds (which makes flossing all that more effective). I think this is because Salmon and Steelhead are not native (steelhead introduced in 1880s and salmon introduced in 1960’s). Some rivers depend heavily on stocking, but there’s quite a lot of natural reproduction, even with all the flossing and redd fishing. Pretty much every river and creek in Michigan has steelhead running up to the first impassable dam, and also salmon in most, so a lot of reproduction seems to occur in small feeder creeks, generally unknown to fishermen. Snagging is illegal (as defined by hooking a fish somewhere other than the mouth), and if you’re obvious about it, another fisherman will get in your face about it, even if there’s no CO around. Everyone understands that you’re going to occasionally get one in the back or tail when you’re bouncing thru a hole. You just have to release it immediately. CO’s will arrest/ticket you if they see you intentionally snagging, keeping an accidentally snagged fish, or observe you with suspicious equipment. Every now and then, however, my lure will get caught on some 50# line with a with a weighted treble on it, so I know there still are people who sneak into holes from time to time to snag.

@roynichols52122 ай бұрын
I would beg to differ. Flossing is an attempt to drag your extremely long leader line thru the fishes mouth and hook them that way. You are in no way trying to entice the fish to bite. Hence, the reason for ridiculously long leaders for the given depth of the water. Nice try anyway.
@RalphHify2 ай бұрын
It's legal to retain fish caught in and about the mouth parts or 'face' of the fish. So a fish hooked in the outside corner of the jaw as if it the hook were drawn into the mouth as described by Roy , can be kept. That's been confirmed a number of times on studies of the Fraser sockeye floss fishery.

thanks for your videos Rod. While talking about hatchery fish, and clipping the adipose fin to identify hatchery fish from wild ones, you failed to mention only 10 % of hatchery fish in Canada are in fact clipped, that means 90% are not clipped, but still considered wild salmon. This is all a big fat lie ! They were raised in a hatchery making them all hatchery fish. The USA hatchery machine clip 100% of there hatchery fish.
@FishingwithRodАй бұрын
Thanks, but that's not entirely correct. The 10% clipping applies to BC's chinook salmon hatchery program up until a couple years ago. Due to continuous lobbying in the recreational fishing community by groups such as the Sport Fishing Institute of BC, adipose clipping of hatchery chinook salmon is now heading toward 100% so regulatory changes on retention are coming soon. For hatchery such as the Robertson on the Stamp/Somass, chinook salmon clipping is already at 100%. Chilliwack is not far behind. For our coho salmon hatchery program, adipose clipping has always been 100%.

@@FishingwithRod I find that hard to believe, because every summer I fish Area 12 from July 15 to August 30. @FishingwithRodАй бұрын
That's because in Area 12, you are participating in a mixed stock fishery where you are fishing over not just hatchery fish, but wild fish which originated from many other systems which do not have hatchery mitigation as well. The abundance of wild coho in totality outnumbers the abundance of hatchery coho.
@RonsgonefishingАй бұрын
@@FishingwithRod: The abundance of wild coho in totality outnumbers the abundance of hatchery coho). My point exactly with only 10 % Coho getting clipped according to fishery officers up there.
@FishingwithRodАй бұрын
No you're not understanding what I was trying to say in the last comment. The abundance of wild coho (wild, not unclipped) outnumbers the hatchery coho salmon output. There are many streams across Southern BC which produce wild coho salmon. The number of those outputs, is way higher than the total output of hatchery productions in the few main systems. The 10%, going back to my original response, applies the chinook salmon, or applied to, because as I said, there is an effort of going to 100% now after several years of lobbying.
