When it comes to side game modes i think you undersold how much people actually play them. Amibo are a side mode and they have a huge community. Subspace was a side gamemode and people still want that back. Home run contest, arcade modes, break the targets so on and so forth are all side modes and people still play them. The reason people dont play tetherball and abyss runes is because theyre poorly balanced. Tetherball has 2 characters that are good and they invalidate the rest of the cast, abyss mode has a handful of runes that invalidate the rest, and a decent chunk of them are buggy. People love stamina mode in smash, squad strike in pm and i would even argue that items are a side gamemode at this point. If you implement the side game mode in an effective manner than people will play it. People dont play spirits in ult because it sucked. People dont use custom moves in 4 because they made them impossible to get, people do however love smash run because it was implemented really cool. What im getting at here is that people will flock towards anything as long as its quality. Which id why volleyball should be in every platfighter ever and then some.

It revoke everything if i just... heard good about these modes by more people. I dont count subspace. People havent played that game for like a decade. I think the rose tinted glasses have affected everyones perception of it. As with everyone else. Ill have maybe one dude actually play them for more than an hour. Everyone else just doesnt care. If i asked 1000 people to play stamina mode ill get like 3 people. Itd just hard to argue if noone ever actually mentions it.

The point about People seeing wave dash in a plat fighter and assuming it's trying to be melee is so true and i hate it. Big example of someone doing this is Maximilian dood. This sucks cuz he'll probably never give much attention to rivals 2 or combo devils for that reason.
@xxProjectJxx5 ай бұрын
I mean, let's be real. Wavedash as it exists in most Plat Fighters is a Melee invention. It's commonplace in the genre now, but its roots are with Melee, and Melee is by far the most mainstream example of the technique. It's only natural that people would make that connection. And also, this is just my personal opinion, but I can't see any value in making wavedash as needlessly precise as it is, other than just blind adherence to Melee's design. Modern Plat Fighters could easily just use one of the shoulder buttons as the shield/roll, and the other as the wavedash button, where that button plus a direction wavedashes you. Wavedash is a frequently used, basic movement technique, and designing it in a way where only expert players can use it consistently needlessly reduces the ability for casual or low level players to engage with the game. I think it's part of why these online scenes die so fast.

16:36 In regards to the whole "platfighters should try to appeal to the fcg crowd as opposed to the smash crowd" I think the OG commenter has it right, and I think Rivals 2 is a great example of this. Rivals 1 created a new space in the platfighter community by not having shields or ledges and engaging with the medium in a whole new way. It's on track to be the first platfighter series to have actual legs to stand on (smash is not a platfighter it's smash). As the first real platfighter series, it NEEDS to reach for the FCG audience. It NEEDS to reach outside of the admittedly small platfighter community. I think Rivals 2 is already doing this. I think having the Orcane trailer at EVO when smash wasn't even there is a good sign that aether studios knows that this is the case. The Smash community and the platfighting community already has their eye on Rivals 2, the smart thing to do is to start advertising to well established communities who are not predisposed to hating or loving your game before it's even released.

Ok, I’m at work, so I can’t really watch the full video, but I’m on break now and I did check out the part responding to my comment (super moves). Overall I agree with most of your points, such as them needing to carefully balance the supers, or how using non-cinematic supers would be best (at least for this subgenre; I think cinematic supers can work fine for purely 1v1 games like Street Fighter), but I’m iffy on the idea of people being scared away from doing just because two attempts were poorly received, especially since it’s really obvious _why_ those attempts were poorly received. Just feels like a good avenue to experiment with the formula. EDIT: on lunch now, so I have more time to discuss what I was talking about. Anyway, I had the realization that a fairly well-balanced implementation of super moves already exists in platform fighters: Terry’s GO moves from Smash Ultimate. Those are literally just super moves, but unique to a single character, and would even be overpowered in traditional fighting games being unlimited and free to use after taking a certain amount of damage, yet while Terry’s considered a good character, he’s still not considered as overpowered as characters with less flashy gimmicks (like Pyra/Mythra), or even some characters without gimmicks and just solid stats (like Sonic). I feel like that style of super (big and flashy, but also quick and doesn’t interrupt normal gameplay) could be easily translated into a universal mechanic without causing much issue. Maybe tie it to a more normal meter instead of a comeback mechanic, but otherwise I think that’d be a good place to start with trying to make competitively balanced super moves in platform fighters.

When it comes to that one comment complaining about gimmicks, its not about the fact that x character has a different gimmick than y character. Its about them playing different. If you look at ike in smash can you honestly say he plays different than ganon? Both charcters main way to play is to space with aeriald and use fair and dair to kill while having a week recovery. Does samus really play that different than mii gunner? There are several characters out there that play identical to other characters. Their moves might be different but they still function the same. If every character has a unique gimmick, then all the characters are truly unique.
@SoftwareNeos5 ай бұрын
I used to think this way too. I think its just the issue of... what happens if people dont want gimmicks? I do agree a lot of characters can feel samey. But then there are examples of characters having different moves or properties and the change is meaningful. Roy vs marth comes to mind. Theres space for both areas of design. Combo devils isnt really doing a lot when it comes to gimmicks but the characters will be fundamentally different. The touhou fighter looks like its moreso the rivals approach. If you wanna slap gimmicks and it helps. Fine. But if your slapping it cause you want diversity ONLY. There are other ways.

Here: Westerners pick bad characters and unnecessarily hate on anime "because anime" and sword users. All of Smash OCs also suck (the hands, stuff like Primids, all that was boring). Echo Fighters being accepted is also showing a two faced side of Smash fans. Before they were "bad clones", now it's just "lol it's better than nothing xd" but they're worse than Melee clones. Literally just alt costumes given slots. Semi-clones are a much better way to do "same fighting style but different application" types of characters. Think Star Fox trio, they're all different in their own right, and it's awesome. MVS and Nick Brawl are complete garbage and will never improve. We need a platform fighter that "gets it" and so far Smash and Rivals are like the only good platform fighters, and Rivals 2 will be better than all of Smash combined even with a smaller roster. Quality over quantity, my dude. Oh, and no, that doesn't mean Smash sucks. It'll just be the number 2 in my eyes. I don't want either to go away in the end. Oh, and another one: Workshop completely ruined Rivals 1. The only good thing coming out of it is Rivals OCs (the 4 that were put in the game, La Reina and the other three that placed high on the contest, etc.). They should have banned Smash characters, memes, etc. from the start.

Ledge hog equalizes the playing field, where ledge trump unnecessarily buffs already great recoveries. Falcon, ganon, little mac, Dr Mario, Roy, all get insane buffs when you put ledge hog in the game. Everyone will end up recording unsafely on stage as a necessity in ledge hog, which is the main equalizer, while there is almost never a reason to do it with ledge trump. Characters like falcon already are forced to recover on stage more often than the others anyway

42:39 Actually the worst take I've ever read. I feel like the statement, "On average, [Western Platfighters'] roster picks are cringe..." shows that this is way more opinionated than actual fact. You know what, I was expecting me to be this passionate about the subject, but this guy gave me 4 paragraphs consisting of poorly thought-out takes, so I guess I'm writing 7 paragraphs explaining why those takes are wrong. Starting off, the idea that Japanese characters are cooler and more appealing while Western rosters are more bland and "safe" is flawed. The Mortal Kombat franchise alone entirely disproves the second part; MK would not be what it is today if it was bland and "safe." And as for Japanese rosters...I mean, if you look at Smash 64's roster, the entire selection is pretty much just bland and "safe" picks (except for maybe Captain Falcon and Samus). The statement is also phrased in a way as if the West doesn't have cool and appealing characters, period. My guy, the main reason Western superheroes became as popular as they are is because people found them cool and appealing. Actually, screw superheroes-this applies to pretty much any popular character. Bugs Bunny wouldn't have been popular if people didn't find him appealing. Mickey Mouse wouldn't have been popular if people didn't find him appealing. Spongebob wouldn't have been popular if people didn't find him appealing. The West absolutely has appealing characters that could easily compete with characters from the East. And then there's the take about female characters, with "Western devs prioritizing 'core values' over attractive female design." First off, that's some incel shit right there. Second, Mortal Kombat again disproves this entire claim, with a significant amount of female characters having at least some sex appeal. Thirdly, Skullgirls is cited as an example of Western fighting games having "an appealing female cast," but the main character I and most people think of when the name "Skullgirls" is brought up is Peacock, who is a female character depicted in a Western style as opposed to an Eastern one. Fourthly, Smash Ultimate only has like 4 or 5 women in the game with an overt "attractive female design" (Bayo, ZSS, Pyra, Mythra, potentially Wii Fit if you're degenerate enough), with every other woman wearing an outfit that doesn't reveal 99% of their skin-I know, crazy concept-so clearly the roster consisting mostly of "attractive female characters" is not a huge deciding factor into whether or not a game is successful. I don't even know why you thought it was deciding factor to begin with. Now that I think about it, almost all of the successful platfights people think of don't really have an absurd, tits-in-your-face character, so this take is just wrong on all fronts. (Fuck you for making me write this btw.) "Japanese characters are more iconic within gaming as a whole." Doomguy. Crash Bandicoot. Master Chief. The Knight from Hollow Knight. Shovel Knight. Cuphead. Among Us Crewmate. Gordon Freeman. Banjo. TF2 Heavy. Altair from Assassin's Creed. Fortnite Jonesy. Sans. Fucking MINECRAFT STEVE. "On average, [Western platfighters'] roster picks are cringe, usually devolving into furries, western indie OCs, meme picks like Alex YIIK and LeBron James, etc." So to begin, the majority of NASB and MVS's roster does not fall into either of the three categories, with the "meme picks" present in those games only making up a small percent of the total characters. NASB1 only has 3 meme picks (Nigel, Hugh, Powdered Toast Man), potentially 4 if you count Garfield; NASB2 only has 3 meme picks (Nigel, Grandma Gertie, Gerald), again potentially 4 if you count Garfield; and MVS only has 2 meme picks (LeBron, Banana Guard), potentially 4 if you count Shaggy and Rick. Plus, it's not like Eastern platfighters don't have meme picks in them as well-Jigglypuff, Pichu, Wii Fit Trainer, and Piranha Plant are famous examples. Also, I want to highlight the use of Western indie OCs in platfighters being "cringe." The main people making platfighters right now are Western indie teams...Of course the roster is going to have Western indie OCs, what do you want from them? If they're not making a fangame and are actually looking to make a profit, then they are obviously not going to be able to afford the licensing of big AAA characters. Unless it's NASB or MVS, their only options are other indie IPs or original characters. If you're looking for a platfighter roster mainly consisting of original, non-furry characters, then most of them already fall into that category, like Rushdown Revolt, Flash Party, Sentinels Inc., and Stickfigurez. "Even in cases when [SSF2 and Crusade] add more western characters like Crash Bandicoot (Crusade) and Rayman (SSF2/Crusade), they're less popular than their Japanese counterparts." The thing is, a character's popularity in a fighting game usually correlates to how good said character is. You think all of the R.O.B. players grew up with a R.O.B. toy and thus have really fond memories of him? No, most of them just play him because he's good. You think all of the Byleth players really like Three Houses? No, they just saw that MKLeo used Byleth. Hell, most Marth players haven't even touched a Fire Emblem game. Additionally, base-game Crusade only has 4 Western characters, and SSF2 only has 1. I don't know if that sample size is large enough to definitively say that Western characters are always less popular in platfighter fangames. And if we go back to the main Smash series, Steve's Ultimate announcement was so large that it caused Twitter to break. He also happens to be the best character in the game, meaning he's pretty popular in terms of playerbase. So yes, Western characters can absolutely be just as popular as Japanese characters in platfighters. "Also, in the case of CMC+, there's a noticeable pattern with the community where the mods based on Japanese/eastern characters like the Touhous and Digimon are more likely to be associated with 'quality,' while the mods based on western characters like the cartoon characters are associated with 'memes/low quality.'" I am looking at the roster right now, and 90% of it is anime. Only 10% of the roster are Western characters, and when said 10% consists of stuff like Among Us Crewmate or Colonel Sanders-yeah, no shit the Western characters are going to be associated with memes/low quality. On the other side of the equation, you have the Rivals Workshop, where some of the most popular and highly-rated characters of all time happen to be Western characters, like Kris, Clover, Steve, The Knight, and Yellow. If people actually went out of their way to add serious Western characters to CMC+ that weren't just made for the lols, then this stigma wouldn't exist in the first place. "In terms of roster appeal alone, Western Platfighters are competing against roster juggernauts like Smash and JUS: the representations of video game history & Shonen Jump history respectively. The west has no equivalent that can compete on equal footing. Not even crossovers like PSASBR and MVS can compete." You're coping if you think anything in Smash and JUS even has a chance of being as popular and iconic as Bugs Bunny, Superman, and Batman. The closest you're getting is Mario, Pokemon, and Minecraft, and those don't have nearly as much generational reach as Bugs-fucking-Bunny. I actually think MVS's roster is pretty good with character appeal; it does a good job covering a lot of the different eras of WB history, and I feel like everybody will have at least 1 character that fits their interests. Also, PSASBR still would have failed even if it did have characters like Cloud. The reason the game flopped is because the gameplay itself sucks; it's not like adding more recognizable characters to it that people like would make the gameplay suddenly suck less. I'm a Parappa fan, and I am not more inclined to play PSASBR because it has Parappa since I know the gameplay sucks. People were not giving the game 0/10s because it didn't have Cloud in it. TL;DR the guy who commented this needs to stop unironically being the "Place, Japan" guy and step outside for a while. Especially with that "attractive female character" take.
@De_an5 ай бұрын
47:56 I'm also going to write some stuff for this comment, but I'll try to keep it brief. "The anime characters have the best waifus. I'll let the dedicated fan art communities for each character do the talking for me on this point." Have you seen what the Smash community has done to Isabelle? Clearly Smash characters don't need to be a hot anime character in order to get that fan art. "The 'anime swordfighters' are iconic." Marth and Roy? Sure. Every other Fire Emblem character? Not so much. Robin, Chrom, Corrin, and Byleth are a far cry from being iconic. Half the time I forget that those four even exist. The third point is just kind of a non-point. It implies that a character automatically has anime influence in Smash if said character had an anime, when like... that's not how that works. Most of the anime listed I would not consider a core part of their series' identity. Especially with the Kirby anime; barely any material from that show gets referenced in the games. If you genuinely think that Kirby has anime influence in Smash just because he had an anime that had almost no impact on the series as a whole, I'm calling you insane. Similarly, most people wouldn't say Mario and Street Fighter has live-action influence in Smash because both had live-action movies made of them. Also, I have not seen the F-Zero anime for your information. Also also, you just casually ignored the fact that a majority of the characters in Smash have not appeared in an anime. Finally, the fourth point. Why does the fact that rushdowns and grapplers appear in non-platfighter games automatically mean that they can't be the best archetype in the Smash series? How does that work? That genuinely baffles me...Like, most archetypes in Smash originate from traditional fighters...Half of the previously-mentioned archetypes are ones that also appear in traditional fighters (zoners, floaties, heavies). There were also just a lot of archetypes that were just left out, like bait-and-punish characters, trappers, and brawlers. "Out of all Smash archetypes throughout all of the games, the swordie archetype has the most universal appeal among casual/competitive players." Brawl Meta Knight and Smash 4 Cloud. That's all I'm going to say.
