I've loved every film that Niko and his friends have produced and released on this channel but this one really resonated with me. Not that I'm a professional athlete in any way, shape or form, but as a 27-year-old Canadian that spent roughly 7 years in school getting a degree in mechanical engineering, and now currently works as one, I've never felt fully satisfied. I always thought that once I got my degree, and got my big boy job that I would be happy and content. But ultimately, working in a big building, in a cubicle, crunching numbers and talking about things that don't really interest me for 40 hours a week has felt more like a prison sentence. I hope to one day soon find the courage that Chris found and move to the rocky mountains, do the things I really love and somehow find a way to make a living from it. In the mean time, thanks for providing me with these videos Niko. For 19 minutes and 5 seconds, you provided me with a glimpse into what life really has to offer when you follow your dreams.

I feel you man, my situation is exactly the same as yours. What I recently started doing is just doing spontaneous things that I feel like doing in my free time. Can be whatever. Can also just be small things. Perhaps try that, small fun things and adventures. Who knows in the future you might have courage for bigger adventures. Oh, and remember, don't think about what others might think of you doing these adventures. It's unimportant.

Went through the same thing. I now design and test ski bindings. Pedestrian infrastructure is cool but it doesn't exactly have the same perks as having a similar job in the ski industry.
@RyanCabral.
@RyanCabral. Жыл бұрын
@@rocketappliantist4969 mind me asking what company you work for? I definitely feel that though. I currently work as a designer for commercial building systems and also do energy modelling to verify building energy use and GHG emissions. Sounds cool, and the knowledge is useful but fundamentally just isn't the it job. Talking about plumbing, ducts, and air just wasn't what I had pictured for myself when i graduated.
@rocketappliantist4969
@rocketappliantist4969 Жыл бұрын
@@RyanCabral. Most of my binding engineering work has been independent contracting and licensing designs I've made to a few different companies. I don't like to share who I sell designs to but basically I made a few toe piece walk mode lock mechanisms as well as some work on a couple heel release systems. I'm still relatively new to this but I like the freedom of choosing what I want to design without someone breathing down my neck with their demands. Most of my ideas come from skiing and being annoyed with something icing up or breaking or getting loose and then I spend the next few days glued to my computer CADding and making McMaster Carr orders.

I moved from Montreal to Revelstoke back in 2018 at age 27. Was working a decent job at a Fortune500 co but quit. Drove my Subaru through Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, S. Dakota, Montana, Calgary and into BC. Alone. Spent 21 months in the mountains, skiing 80 days a yr. and golf/kayak/hiking the summers. Worked as a cook. Took it 1 day at a time. Eventually, got back into "career-mode" and moved to Europe to start in another city. I reminisce about those days in Revy: big mountain lines and fresh tracks. Don't regret it!

I'm new to the ski industry but got very inspired by Chris' words: "It was scary, fun & totally challenging in every way... but the way to live your life is actually just to do the things you wan to do, not the things you think you ought to do." "Then, do the things you want to do with absolute intensity and full focus." "It doesn't matter what you do after that or what happens after that, because it will work." Great words to finish the year. Edit: I just watch the 16:57 part lol

I remember you talked about FWT and your pressures in succeeding in the competition in a video a while back. And how you came to realize that you don't have to be the best rider ever and have a career in the FWT but instead you're good at making ski videos and you wanted to focus more on that. Just wanted to say your videos are special. Not in an overused means of the word but really, special. Whenever you have a bad day and happen to sink in comparison and the negative thoughts of someone doing something better than you, just remember you're doing something special. And always stay together with Joonas. The ultimate duo of ski films.

Nikolai this is without question one of your best ever. I am a Dad of a 15 y.o. son that is doing his best to teach a kid that loves the mountains. I want the best for him regardless of his choices and like most teenagers they don’t get what you are conveying till years later. Our family watches your videos religiously and when my son sent me a text telling me this video gave him “chills” I can see why. You gave him something that had meaning beyond just skiing kick ass lines in amazing places. You connected a love of something to the meaning of life and happiness. Thank you from this humble Dad.

Having been born and raised in a tropical country, I've never had the chance to experience snow until I moved to Japan for work. Three years ago, I tried snowboarding and knew this hobby clicked when I realized I was laughing hysterically from pure joy of gliding down snowy mountains. This biopic highlights major life decisions that one must carefully take. At one point I contemplated at the thought of becoming a ski bum (or snowboard bum?), but that meant being away from everyone I love. Indeed, there is a time for everything, and to me, my time with the snowy mountains will soon end as I choose to return home for good before the next winter season.

Not wanting to be a ski bum and feeling the need to pursue a high status career but then getting trapped with no free time, it's very relatable. This resonates on so many levels for me. As a Canadian who loves to ski, the skills on show here blow me away. As an entertainment lawyer, the production values and story telling impress me. But most importantly as a 62 year old, I will tell you that the words "the way to live your life is actually just to do the things you want to do, not the things you think you ought to do" is 100% the way to live your life. That means something different to everyone of course, but it's truly the secret to happiness in this crazy messed up world. For me it just meant starting my own law firm and practising law the way I wanted to do it, but if I could ski like Nikolai, I would have moved to the mountains. So to all the young people reading this, believe that quote and fcking live it! If we're lucky, as humans we get on average only 4,000 weeks of life, so reflect on that and then go do those things you actually want to do. Peace + love from Canada.
