I think for most people the potential CPU upgrade path is a lot less important than you might think it is. I've built a ton of systems for people and in general they do not upgrade past the initial purchase except maybe slotting in a new GPU or adding more storage. The vast majority of people do not perform major upgrades every couple years. They buy a good system, and use it until it's really getting too old and slow. That's often longer gaps in-between than any socket lasts.
@nateTrh Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the average npc just buys then dumps their system like most people do cars. It's more so enthusiasts or people that keep up with technology that care about upgrading/maintenance. It's sad because people used to care a lot more about their things but now people can't even be bothered to support right to repair. Also, people are used to 2 year Intel cycles so they're not used to upgrading the cpu in general.

i feel like amd has been different though. look how long am4 lasted. and now Intel might be using lga 1700 socket for another cpu, which would make that 3 cpus. I think we will start to see smaller and smaller generational leaps in performance with cpus and them using sockets for a little longer now, with more refreshes.

For all it's issues, AM4 has been an absolute beast of a platform for AMD. 4 generations (seeing as there wasn't a proper retail 4000 series) of CPU on a single socket and you can still see previous gen CPUs on AM4 trading blows with AM5 in certain workloads. It was a bit of a kick in the teeth when my 2950x was beaten out by the 3000 series in performance and then socket X399 never got another generation of Threadripper. 20/20 hindsight, bit of a bad investment there. Though I guess I could have gone to the 2990wx for the extra cores. My x570 system is still holding it's own, so much so I will probably wait another generation or 2 before upgrading it. Pity the 5600x3d is microcenter exclusive, we don't have microcenter in my country, would be fun for some overclocking and benchmarking.

@WirxawTanev Жыл бұрын
Those same people "probably" sit on either deadend motherboards with deadend CPUs or on 3600+ CPUs. And for those same people - it's better to invest those spare ~250$ into a GPU to get the performance boost. Like, literally, if you are sitting on some 3060 and you have an opportunity to liquidate it for some 250$ while adding 250$ on top for 4070(or even 3080\ti used) - that's a MUCH bigger improvement. The FPS that Jay shows are with 4090 or otherwise "for-test-purposes" card. You won't get that much FPS if you improve 1600 for 5600xDDD on some 3060. Well, perhaps, you'll get like 10 fps, faster loading times, higher 1% lows, but that's it. Not that getting a 3080 for 1600 would be a great idea, but... 3080 you can put into the new system, whereas 5600xDDD would be forever stuck in AM4. The only more or less sensible upgrade that I could imagine would be some B450\2600 kid who had his parents buy the PC, but over the years he got a job and earned his first grand or something. He could somewhat make it work. But anything less than B450 is a dead motherboard(X370 owners probably have either upgraded already or aren't running 1600) and anything better than 2600 is a perfectly capable CPU that doesn't need to be upgraded. After all - this is all just 6 cores "purely for gaming" scenario. And 6 cores is shit. And gaming isn't the end all be all. When I bought my 5600 - it was like 150$, and that's already a much better bang for the buck.

Once I'm clocked out, I use my system for 1440p gaming using an RTX 3080 12GB. I read and watched tons of reviews comparing the 5800x3D and the 5900x and nearly all of them focused on 1080p gaming, not 1440p. I didnt finally find some reviews that measured gaming performance for 1440p and 4k. At 1440p, the 5900x and 5800x3D are pretty much neck and neck, trading blows depending on the specific game. Overall, I made the decision to buy what I considered the more balanced all-around CPU. I wish more reviews did a larger spread of resolutions to represent the balance and load changes between the CPU and GPU. I understand why 1080p testing is important for a gaming CPU, but when comparing CPU-vs-CPU from a balance standpoint or a value proposition, I feel like there's an argument to be made for the relevance of 1440p.

I'll be buying the bundle tomorrow. I usually don't build a system with an upgrade path in mind. Seem like a waste upgrading. Then you have unused parts laying around, or you have to try to sell used parts. It's easier to sell the whole system and build new. So buying an end of life part is fine with me. @hassosigbjoernson5738 Жыл бұрын
There are no performance gains if your GPU is in middle class territory like RX 5700 XT - RX 6800. And the savings as it is right now are only when you choose AM4. There is still the cheaper upgrade option to a 5800 X3D instead of a 7700 X. And when the time has come the AM5 platform has gotten cheaper and there will be new chipsets available (in 18+ months). But who knows ... maybe in 3 years a Ryzen 5800x/ 5800 X3D is still a solid CPU combined with mid-tear GPUs.

@@hassosigbjoernson5738 i'm talking about this exact moment in time as the CPU is out tomorrow. Theoretically, when upgrading, I wouldn't need a new motherboard or ram as I already have them. 16:50 that difference might be explained by cache alone. cpu had data in cache -> sent out immediately. other had to check cache, did not find it, had to reach out to memory, and then send it. this can help be faster even if you are 100% bound by gpu, as cpu bounce the ball to gpu even faster. IMHO AMD will release one or two chips down the line for am4 as, they produce stuff for mobile with older chips, if there will be demand, we can see something like R5 9540 mobile to be migrated and sold for am4. it all depends on if they can sell all they make on mobile side really. Everytime they would do it, it would be another poke at intel that does 2 series each board and then they are e-waste.

I'm in the market for a CPU/mobo right now, hell, I'm planning to buy one from microcenter. But honestly? THis doesnt look to be the best, even by microcenter bundle deals. Like, I could get the CPU and mobo and 16 GB RAM for $300....but I can get a 7700x or 12900k for $400. And idk, 3d vcache or not, most benchmarks only have the 5000 series 3D CPUs performing like a 7000 series one. So....7700x is basically on par with a 5800 X3D give or take. And then the 12900k is...all those cores for that money. Do I really wanna buy 6c/12t on a dead platform at the end of 2023? I dont think so. So microcenter's bundle deal is kinda underwhelming given for an extra $100 i could get a much nicer bundle deal like a 7700x or 12900k. If I wanted to spend yet another $100 on top of that, I'm looking at a 13700k which is one of the fastest gaming CPUs on the market and like the 12900k is a 16 core CPU. I mean right now my debate comes down to do i buy 7700x and get a platform with future compatibility or do i get a fancy 16 core intel cpu on a dead platform. The 5600 X3D aint even in the running, it's old, it's dated, and while it's cheaper it's not the most futureproof thing in the world. And whatever i buy, id prefer to keep at least 5 years so...yeah. 5600 X3D isnt gonna be looking very good there. 12900k might look decent. 7700x im guessing will be dated but i could just drop in whatever 8800 or 9800 X3D chip they have out at the time. ....or...a 9600 X3D or whatever if they have one super cheap. Point is....i just dont see the point of this. It would've been a cool chip a few years ago, but in this day and age, eh...it's cheap for a reason. 6 core chip on a dead platform. Nice if you have a 1700 or something and want an upgrade, but otherwise...yeah no.

That seems like an incredible drop in for an older AM4 like a 3600X and possibly even a 5600X if you can sell it at a decent price. The question of RMA keeps coming up. When it comes to larger distributors of products that have a measurable failure rate, they will often keep a similar number available for warranty purposes until they no longer have any retail stock left. At that point, they will keep a percentage over time (like 1 year after it leaves the shelves they will drop down to 800 available for warranty instead of 1,000). This is why you sometimes see a surge of products that are easily two years old all hit the shelves at the same time. Those are warranty backups they have determined they will no longer need and can now sell.

Its still degrading as now I can't run negative curve optimiser anymore nor anything beyond stock timing and speed on the ram at 4800Mhz (not the advertised AMD Expo 5600). Damn you Asus! If this was available globally, i would have snagged one for a build later or an upgrade option for the pcs i've built for family members. But since it's limited and given it's reused silicon that didn't make the cut for 5800X3D, I'd rather they be sold in a limited fashion as opposed to being e-waste.

Being exclusive to micro center is the dumbest shit they could’ve done

I wish you'd include the 5600X in here, I bought mine about 8 months ago now for around 200$ to upgrade from my 3600X. managed to get around half of it back selling the old CPU and got uncharted legacy of thieves collection which I wanted to get too, so ultimately a nice upgrade for dirt cheap. but I sure would've debated getting this even now with my 5600X if the bump in performance was enough. 5800X3D's are way too expensive in comparison

Im in the same boat as you. I got a whole new rig which include the 5600x as my CPU I decided that if I need to, Id upgrade to 5800x3D in a few years because it is currently just too expensive( I live in South Africa and If I had to convert my currency to USD its around $350-400 for the 5800X3D right now) If you have a decent GPU, your 5600x will last you quite some time but if we want to hit high refresh rates at 1440p or higher than we would need to upgrade for the extra V cache Its cool that we have another upgrade option from 5600x to 5600x3D but it prob would not be worth it for us, rather just upgrade to 5800x3D when the time comes

@@w0ngky in the same boat as you. built a rig with 5600x + 3070ti combo last year, think ill skip 5600x3d and go straight for 5800x3d + zen 3 in a year or 2

15:40 I got 288 avg fps @ 1080p medium with a undervolted 5800X3D and a undervolted and overclocked 6950XT. I'm 48% gpu bound.

Picked up the combo this weekend from microcenter for $299. Coming from a 4670k, it was a MASSIVE upgrade for me. I’m ecstatic with it. Don’t really care it’s the last of AMD4. It will last for years to come.

Did the same picked up the bundle. The way I see it with my GPU (6700 non xt) I won't see a difference but when I upgrade to the rx 6800xt the cpu should scale nicely with a big GPU upgrade. Isn't that a viable upgrade path at least for the next few years?
@joshkey8930 Жыл бұрын
@@beaglegod1 I don’t see why not. In my opinion the 5600x3D should be a capable CPU for the next 5ish years. Not to mention, the 5800x3D is still out there for the AM4 socket if you would looking for a little more longevity in a year or two that you can pop in.

Yeah The obvious sweet spot for this CPU is upgrading an existing am4 set up where you’re just dropping in the CPU and getting maximum benefit without the cost of having to repurchase your other components. For example, I have a machine that has a😢old 2700, that would see outrageous benefits from this simple $220 upgrade.

I dropped one in my 40$ asrock a320 MB with a 7800xt and it runs really quick, truly impressed. this going from a r5 3600 non X and 3060ti which ran well, This is just a whole other level with the 5600x3d'

Seems like a solid contender for me considering I’m looking to upgrade my 2000 series to a 5000 series and stick with AM4. I’ll get a much beefier AM5 CPU likely in 3-5 years and I’ll worry about the mobo then. What I’m curious about is how this compares to a 5700x, 5800x and 5900x since you can find all of them at hefty discounts in todays market.

I went from the 2700x to a 5600x, I couldn't care less about those 2 lost cores. My stuttering issues went away.

If you are planning on upgrading platform in 3-5 years you might want to skip am5 since its support ends in 2026. Maybe consider a 56/5800x3d now and an AM6 x3d when you upgrade again
