In 8th grade I saw the AD&D cover of Curse of Strahd at my friend's house. I looked through it and was completely confused. He said he'd teach me the next weekend. I solo play for the escapism... and I'm learning to not be ashamed of that. Bills, taxes, family drama, dating nonsense, global warfare, inevitable sickness and death.... they'll all still be there when I finally slay the dragon or rescue the princess or whatever. For a short time I get be whoever I want wherever I want.... and that's liberating.

Playing solo to own instead of rent hit real hard with me. I have only been a DM for other people for the entirety of my 15+ years of playing pen and paper rpgs. When I discovered solo play a few years ago I realized that what I really wanted was to finally be the player in a game. Being able to use my years of DM experience to enhance my solo play has been the most rewarding feeling I have ever had gaming. Even more so than a really really good group session. I dont know, there is just something about coming up with ALL of it alone that makes the cool bits that much cooler. Thanks for making me think of all this.

Passing time that isn't screen based. I get migraines from too much screen time, so I need a hobby that isn't screen time. Heaven is solo peeple... For Sure!! Creativity/Inspiration. I realized I lost my ability to pretend and was struggling to just do something fun for the sake of the fun, for a variety of reasons. I feel it's important for me to try to rediscover that right now. Solo rpg is a way for me to do that. A conversation with myself... Wow. How did you get inside my brain?!?! 🤣🤣🤣 Like collecting stuff. Yup, I've completely become a dice goblin now. I scrounge to find lots of the Tails of Equestria My Little Pony RPG stuff cause a bunch of it is out of print. I've got a bunch of specifically solo games to try, to try to figure out what I actually really like and enjoy playing. ALL THE THINGS!! 🤣🤣🤣

As someone who mostly has 5e stuff and a weekly game with other people, I want to solo to both use the stuff I collect and better learn the rules.... but I also want to try to run a game where the PCs aren't psychopaths that just kill everyone. That's the real reason I say I want to solo. I want to find out if it's possible to survive in D&D as a proper group of people. That and I want the monsters to act in their own self-interest as well rather than just running at swords until they die. Hell really is other people.
@carolinelabbott24514 ай бұрын
5e can be played solo, several folks have written books to help you with that. I bought 2 books and decided to go simpler rules and oracle's after reading the books. I realised simpler is what I am after for solo play, but one day I will go back and solo 5E. Basically I've a lack of confidence, but I'll grt there by doing it. 😊 Personal I want to be able to play Shadowrun solo sometime in the near future. When I was first buying Shadowrun books I was struggling to find folk willing to play alongside a girl. The editions have moved on now so I still can't find folk to play with the edition I've read. 🤷🏻♀️

Ha! The comment about solo play to collect. Yeah that's me. I've spent hundreds of dollars on systems and support materials and rarely get myself to play.
@crapphone77444 ай бұрын
Deborah on the Geek Gamer channel nailed this. She says "It's all play". Rolling up a character, reading through gaming material, crafting something for your tabletop that no one else will ever see or use, it all counts. If you play rarely, that might just be you. If you want to play more, I suggest you roll up a character or just create one that reflects your alter ego in the game world you're contemplating. Then just pick a situation to drop them into and go from there and see what develops. I started out that way because I felt awkward and my character is still with me 3 years later, he has banished demons, raise the Dead, undefeated an ancient curse that was creating problems in his own sect. He worships the god of the dead and madness. Do what's fun and don't worry about whether it counts as role-playing or not. Do what feels good for a while and you'll discover the reason you like to solo.
@brads20414 ай бұрын
@@crapphone7744nice point. I think another problem I have is that I think I have to run a campaign. Maybe I just need to try some "one shots" just to start. It could even be west marches style where each one shot slowly adds to a world and things just build up over time
@crapphone77444 ай бұрын
@@brads2041 I wouldn't even go that deep into it. Let it become what it wants to become. It's like all the advice you hear on World building, start small and let it grow organically. My game started when my character walked out of a building on a plane that was mostly volcanic ash with no terrain features cuz I couldn't think of any. 😅. Just remember the journey is the destination, which means you don't have to know where you're going.

That's why I lift AND solo rpg. Do plenty of things that feed your own sense of achievement. Most people you encounter want your money or your attention, so spend on yourself and those committed to you first. Advice: Avoid those that engage you with someone else's marketing strategy, or continually put money in someone else's pocket. So no MMO's(or dating expensive women, lol). I mean, don't screw over your job, but don't pursue job skills that won't improve or benefit you. Learn a skill that makes life better for you, your neighborhood, or your close family. Not all these things at once, obviously, maybe just 3, one physical challenge, one mental outlet and one skill to develop. Maybe pick a 4th that will help other people(preferably not ones you work for and definitely not those you pay to entertain).
