Yes, I know some of you will roll your eyes at this, but those who don't roll their eyes might find some wonderful ideas in here to FINALLY play that game/write that game/read that game they have been putting off forever. Take a retreat! I'll show you my method for making sure it's a productive one.

KZbin comments aren't a great vehicle for sincerity, but here goes. Not only is this the only channel that has actually and directly improved my solo ttrpg experience, but the way your wisdom, insight, and compassion shine through in your presentation is really remarkable.

I know this video is through the lens of solo gaming, but I think this discussion is incredibly important for everyone. A population in constant bliss are not paying attention, and a population in continuous fear makes poor decisions. It is imperative we traverse that middle ground. Thank you for the topic and thank you for handling this with compassion and wisdom.

Jesus Christ MA, I don't know how you do it but this one hit so close to home it hurt. What's more, starting tomorrow I'm looking at having an entire week to myself at home. As someone completely comfortable with spending time with themselves, I'm both terrified and exhilarated at the thought of attempting the exercise you put forth. This is why I watch this channel and this is why I have subscribed to the podcast. Pure gold, simple as that. Thank you for the work you are doing.

What a beautiful, introspective video. So much of solo roleplaying is also feeding your inner child. If you are in a place where you don’t like yourself, know that the rest of us have been there. Make sure you talk to yourself with the same compassion that you would give the 6 year old version of yourself (little you). You wouldn’t call little you stupid for making a mistake, how would you correct them compassionately? Give that to yourself, you deserve it.

Didn’t expect to find such an important video today, but I’m thankful I did. I hope our solo RPGs can provide an outlet, even just to break up the stresses of the everyday.

This was excellent-genuinely. My dad cares for a small cabin in the woods with no cell service or internet, and I’ve gone ahead and scheduled a weekend in my calendar to read, solo roleplay, and write music there. Thank you for the inspiration and the great videos!

I have really enjoyed listening to you walk through your head space using Solo games. You have inspired me to do what I have wanted to do for years which is write "Stories I would like to read". Note: I am an old dude who has been reading and gaming for all my life and coming to the end of my professional career heading towards retirement . Your discussions of solo RPGs and journaling has shown me that I can use the Solo games to inspire myself to do the writing and story telling that I have always wanted to do. Thanks so much.

Ok last comment. This post of yours was what made it all come together. Watched your videos on Mork Borg, Solo Play and Solitary Defilement, but this recommendation about doing a SoloRPG Retreat was Aces!! So last week made our annual week long family trip. During this annual vacation I have 2 to 3 hours of peace every morning before everyone wakes up. I collected the appropriate rules loaded onto my Tablet, my hard copy of Mork Borg, my box-o-dice, and a blank journal. In the weeks previous I generated the characters, printed some maps, and wrote out the sequencing of preparing for each new game day etc. It went very well the patroness made it to her family Villa abandoning the blight ridden Town, alive though not unscathed. Thanks so much for balzing the trail and walking us through this game, journaling, and a Solo RPG Retreat!

David I enjoyed reading the journey of your comments so much. It sounds like you had a key point of this which is gathering the pieces that made this feel special! Playing in the morning is such an awesome way to enjoy the “invisible time” before others wake. So happy to hear this!!!

I’ve heard Marcel Proust “In Search of Lost Time” series is also written in that style of putting you into the character’s sense of what being them is like, especially of having a memory of something. I haven’t read it myself though.

I was a lonely kid and many time had to stay alone while parents were working or something, and out of boredom I had to be creative with limited toys and means I had. Since then probably I realised boredom as a real thing before I got to grow up and inherit "feeling bored means you have time to do something useful or progitable" way of thinking, isntead I just accepted it along with the need to fill my time with something that would fascinate me or at least feel other than bored. So now I see or hear people saying things like "solo gaming is shameful and I feel bad" I both realise how its a real problem and how I must be lucky to develop this honesty to myself, that I know I want some fun and I will do whatever, even if its playing with imaginary friends biker road movie and rolling on primitive game system (because by that time I was 14 and had almost no brain to properly read and inhabit what people created before me). I just want to have good times. So I hope those who feel bad for "sitting alone and talking to yourself like a shizo with dice not doing impact on the world" find truce with themselves and accept that solo playing is just the same wat to spend/kill time like video games, books or tv shows, so no more great shame one should feel.

Thank you for the video Man Alone. It might be the ADHD talking but I always forget to actually schedule time for stuff like this. I schedule work, time in the gym, and chores, but I always forget to actually dedicate time to these sorts of things with the rest of my free time. The idea of booking a hotel to do it again also sounds fun, I haven't done that sort of thing in like a decade but the few times I have were lovely.

I have started allocating time play or craft or write. I can't allocate a specific time each day due to health issues but it is there in my calander to remind myself. I have a tick list to mark off every time I get to do something fun, and much like a reward card if I fill up a set amount I give myself an extra treat (which can be anything from a new book, a craft tool, trying some new craft, or some fizzy haribos).

I am also a Hoarder, so I have a calander reminder to declutter and remove items when I can, that way as long as I am getting 2 or more items out the house I can buy 1 item new. 😊 It is working out quite well so far. Then again I also have a carer that comes over and we have one day a week dedicated to decluttering. Friends and family help collect the items once my charity bag is filled or my damaged items box is filled. They also help call my local council to take overly large items for me. Hope you have something similar for you. I have no car, nor would I be legally allowed to drive, so my local council service is an absolute gem for me.

@@carolinelabbott2451 I'm happy you're making progress with that and also allowing yourself to have fun and treat yourself :3 I can get like that too with some things, trying to use stuff up before letting the goblin in my brain take over. 2nd and Charles is kinda great for that since they buy back a bunch of different forms of media like books, tcg, video games (if you have one nearby).

I've spent so many hours reading about games to scratch that itch , thinking about the games I wish I could run or play in. It's wonderful there are so many solo games some of which are relatively setting agnostic if you want to shift into a specific setting you find interesting Just a great and interesting video overall, feeling similar feelings missing all the miniature painting I used to do, I think I'll do it

I have a lot of colouring books. 😊 I am slowly scanning them all so I can donate half of them ( uncoloured in ) and the rest I will keep to finally colour in. I can then reprint any I want to colour in again or cut up to make an interesting collage to cover my future book covers/storage boxes/dice tower. 😊😊😊

Guess I lied. I created another value of the Solo RPG retreat. In the past I would prepare games for scenarios I wanted to run for the gaming group. This includes painting miniatures and building terrain. Having to run a game is a real motivator. I no longer have that group to game with and motivate me to work on minis, scenarios and terrain. By setting dates for running a solo game for myself, a "Solo Game Retreat:, that target is almost as motivating as having to run a game for agroup. Thanks again Man Alone!

I showed up for the roleplaying, but stuck around for the s-tier psychological insight. Seriously, I'm in a good place atm, but I know there's some younger people in this audience that can really benefit from learning that kind of self talk.

But I often run out of energy to do anything x.x even if I schedule it in some day in the week, I often don't have enough energy to even start u.u That gets me mad and I feel sh*t and then have even less energy to do sth else that could help gaining back some of the missing powers u.u
