Recording and releasing a professional album from my own living room…Who would’ve thought? But then again, 2020 has really proven to throw “life as we know it” into complete disarray.

He most likely doesn’t. It’s much harder for a native speaker to deliberately change and keep an accent for an extended period of time than it is to just go with the flow and adjust it on the spot - the former requires attention and knowledge (or awareness, at the very least) of distinctive phonological markers of a chosen accent. The latter is a bit more like code switching - you know, like non-native speakers who absentmindedly switch between languages during one utterance. He has good ear though (I mean, d u h) - his American accent is on point, and I guess he was able to acquire it through osmosis (I doubt he went to an accent coach or sth). He switches his own accent to a varying degree depending on the accent of his interlocutor which is pretty awesome, but doesn’t require that much conscious monitoring if one is accustomed to so doing.

@Iris Lee It oscillates a lot between American, British and Australian which is hilarious to me because I've never heard anything like it before especially at 4:08. You can hear Australian in "Ok so how this is going to work is Jonathan my", and then 'producer' is said in an American way, then "who is currently based in" is Australian/British (bit of crossover between us and the poms), then "London, is gonna be remotely" is said in a British accent , then "controlling the software and my computer" is Aus/Brit, then the rest of it is American. I'm just glad he's still kept our accent.

I love that you did this project from home- definitely a humongous help to have an engineer on the other end helping with controlling the program and giving feedback on the performances. I think that’s one of the hardest parts of doing it all by yourself at home, being the engineer and the performer can be stressful and taxing sometimes, or even just being objective about the takes in real time - that’s pretty tough. Excited to hear this record, congratulations!!

Don't get disappointed, if your results sound differently from a technical point of view (i.e. even if you play the violin as well). I'm sure there there has been a lot of software post processing involved here! Recording a violin is difficult in any case, but in a confined space it's pure horror. Ray's sound engineer could have helped thousands of frustrated self-recording violinists, but missed this chance - this video is merely a marketing video, nothing else. I guess they didn't use all 6 mics in the end, used a kind of convolution reverb and maybe more. That'd be helpful to show and discuss. Pity.

I've learned a surprising amount watching this. First of all, you're Aussi!! WHAT?!? You sound like ME most of the time, but then you talk to an Aussie and you sound like Jazza. You've got that whole Rick Springfield/Nicole Kidman thing going where your Yankee accent switches on and off. Second: cable management!! I could totally use a bit of that around here. Third: VSOs (violin-shaped objects) sound different from high-dollar violins in recording tracks. It's also possible that the sound wave looked really different in the engineer's track display. Congrats on the album and the DIY tech stuff.

Pro tip: to attach/detach the mic clip, it's actually easier if you hold the mic clip still and turn the loose pole of the mic stand. Then tighten that joint on the stand.

Had it been a recording studio the room would have been more live. They afforded themselves the optron of hearing from a variety of locations in the room which I think would help "flesh out" this non- ideal space. Guessing.

This was actually informative. It appears his mixing engineer applied a convolution reverb to the recording. I'm just curious how high his ceilings are as to get a clean recording without reverb issues.

I agree, the sound appears to be heavily processed. How much of this is "real"? It's amazing what sound technolgy can do; TwoSet violins have demonstrated that you even can correct tones that are out of tune. I am afraid, that we won't get an answer on your comment by the producer or Ray.
