Reid Captain is running the coolest piston powered vehicle contest, so I thought it would be a good way to spread awareness of how amazing axial engines are. The rules don't allow mods, so I had to make a new version without scaling. I use hinges to lock my differential and to control the engine, I'm not sure if it constitutes "doing meaningful work," so I hope I'll be alright.
I made this custom level a while back, I thought it'd be cool if everyone played it and posted their creations. I got one so far, which was really simple, but I was honestly surprised at how clever it was. I'm looking forward for more.

I know this was posted ages ago, but do you happen to have a transmission design that can handle higher torque and doesnt use braces?

I recommend a gear and steering hinge design. You can use the steering hinges to grapple the gears and engage them. No braces required and the throughput is as high as the input speed so no speed loses. As for torque I can't say but I think it wouldn't slip as I've never hap problems with higher power vehicles

This is great, I have a challenge I think is worthy for you: Make a radial engine powered tracked vehicle I haven't played besiege in a long time and looking through my old builds I found several tanks I had made, and they were still very sturdy and dureable despite all the updates, this was before part scaling so I'm sure you can build way more efficient tracks now (those were chains of hinges with the long armor plate on the exterior, and supports fitting on the inside as well as right/left) those were very heavy vehicles, I had a fascination with building only out of indestructible blocks to create unbreakeable vehicles, and even without powered wheels or cogs I managed to power them, so now with the scealeable blocks, you could make way smaller/lighter tank threads, making it even easier to power the vehicle by reducing it's total weight though it still is a greater wheight than any minimalist wheeled vehicle, and it would be really cool to see tracks powered by that engine, so that's the challenge, build your own track threads, and make a radial engine strong enough (you might need a gearbox depending on the speed to power ratio) to move it around at reasonable speed I would say you have made something truly impressive if it can climb 20° slopes, 10° slopes for the silver medal

The weight of the parts does not scale with size. Encountered this problem when building missiles, missiles ended up heavier than the plane carrying them

Axial engines are really fun, there’s some very strange motorcycles with these kinds of engines from back in the day

You were too good for his competition, Vlasta! You should make your own. This is a very cool concept by the way. I have made absolute mechanical monstrosities of engines, but I can admit I still do not understand how this works even after watching your videos. One cool thing and a serious limiting factor in my progress has been developing transmissions. I believe I've peaked in terms of raw mechanical power that I can harness, transferring massive torque to the wheels through an extreme gear ratio only ends up tearing most everything drivetrain related apart under stress. It is like flooring a car in 6th gear at that point. With a transmission, I can switch to taller gears only when needed instead of a fixed drive ratio. I gave it a try, however the efficiency losses were massive and ended up being significantly slower than even old cars of mine, taking it from a meters/second speed of 35 to 19. not only that, but it almost doubled the length of the car. I'd love to see your take on it, and would definitely be thrilled if you found a way to make it practical!

Why would you get disqualified for using hinges?

They had a rule that said you were allowed to use hinges for steering, as long as they don't do any "meaningful work". I'm using hinges for more than just steering, and I wasn't really sure what exactly is meant by meaningful work. Also I needed a setup for the joke

@@vlastasusak6881 Oh, ok. Thing is, how would you make a piston engine without hinges? Why would hinges be banned and not anything else?

​@@bobi_lopataru It's a bit unsettling, but some people make the offsets in piston engines by calculating the angles using goniometric functions and inputting them manually with the rotate tool, and creating all sorts of wonky half connections to make it hold together, rather than just using hinges to rotate everything into place neatly. The point of the competition was to make a vehicle that is powered by a mechanism that converts linear power to rotational power, so you can use pistons, ropes, springs, water cannons, normal cannons, vacuums, bombs, rockets, and flying blocks, provided you're not using any of that to just push the vehicle directly. Therefore purely rotational elements like powered hinges, powered wheels and cogs, spinning blocks, saws, and drills are banned, with the exception of using them for steering. Maybe if you used the rotational elements to make a linear piston that then powers a linear to rotational mechanism, you could argue that is also ok

Because I haven't felt emotional fulfillment in like half a year and I just can't get myself to do the damn voiceovers for the video I made sometime around march 🤠

For this video, none at all, since mods weren't really allowed in the competition. I like mods, miniguns and hoverblocks are fun, but I try to keep mods that add new blocks out of the videos, so the mods I mostly use are building tools: -EasyScale to change the size of the blocks through the attributes, which I find gives me more control than handle operated scaling mods -NoBounds which lets me change the attributes of blocks to any value without limits -Additive Loading to allow me to load multiple saved creations to combine them easily -Colliderscope which lets me see the actual hitboxes of blocks Generally, I try to use mods as little as possible, building with mods makes me feel like the product is less legitimate. It lessens the challenge, and breaks the vibe. I use scaling, because some of the blocks in the game are just inconveniently bulky, but when I do, I try not to go over a factor of two, because that usually leads to things not connecting properly.
