I've been here in the Philippines mostly the last 10 years , the first 3 years I rented , the rent was 3500 pesos , then 4500 , then 6k pesos a month so it did the math on the average Philippino house cost and decided to build , I want my wife to have a house paid for if I bite the bullet 😢 so in 2017 we built a 100 square meters house on our 200 meters lot that I bought the first year . Now this house has paid for itself if I were still renting . All my bikes are paid for and our sari sari is paid for , my utilities are power 7k to 8k with 2 aircons , soda cooler and fridge , water 350 , internet 1,150 with tv and trash is 40 pesos every 3 months . We spend about 3k to 3500 a week on food , 950 propane and about 1500 scooter gas . I bank 65 % of my retirement every month and I move money here when the rate is up . If it's down I wait .I am 100 % debt free and live off grid when I go to America 🇺🇸 debt free there too . I didn't work 36 years of my life to debt it out . We are building a new store and restaurant 100 square meters now . About to start the roof beams if the rain holds off lol . I love living here in Solano Nueva Vizcaya Philippines 🇵🇭.

Great video and you make very pertinent points. I've seen so many expats on my travels who dive into renting high end accommodation because they have what they think is a big stash of cash from a pension payout only to go broke and go home within the first few years. Not just the property cost causing that but living like they did when they were on two-week holidays previously but at that time only on a minimal pension. Admittedly, I live in an apartment which is far bigger than I need here in Korea, but I am in full time employment and get paid a housing allowance (which I exceed!). However, when I retire, what you have suggested is the way to go. Thanks for sharing.
