My biggest takeaway from this revisit series is tjat I didn't realize how much personality the hub worlds add. They obviously aren't perfect, but having an open area to run around between levels makes it feel like a bigger adventure and adds for fun opportunities woth the side characters. I'm glad Frontiers went with the open zone amd I hope they build in that and add more interest areas NPCs to talk to in the next game.

I didn’t grow up with Sonic, it was always that series that I looked at ads and thought “Shit man this guy’s pretty awesome” but never actually got the chance to play, but then with Sonic Mania and Sonic Frontiers, it showed me that Sonic could be EVERYTHING I hoped it would be when I was kid looking at the series from the outside. Running around in Frontiers at top speed just tickles my brain whether through Cyberspace or the open world, and I LOVE the set pieces and combat in it, it just feels like THIS is what I’ve always expected Sonic to be from the second I saw him in commercial in the 2000s. I still haven’t even finished Frontiers because I like to play open world games slowly, not rushing through the story or main objectives, to the point where I end up moving on the next big release before finishing them, but I still find myself thinking back on Frontiers and wanting to come back to it, jank and all, because it’s just so damn FUN to me. I’d LOVE if this is the direction the series takes from now on, just imagine being able to run around freely with Frontiers’ maneuverability in big city with NPCs, that’d be the dream, but this game just gave me damn near everything I could’ve wanted from a 3D Sonic game and has me excited for the future of the franchise.

For years, before I became a real Sonic fan, I heard Sonic was mostly bad games and only has like 4 good games. But as I started getting more into the franchise and started playing more of the games, I couldn’t believe how wrong the statement was. I saw so many great games and stories with so much heart and love and I was blown away. Sure, there was still bad games ( notably Sonic Boom, Lost World, Forces) but I played Both adventure games, unleashed, frontiers, generations, all the classics, and mania and those are now some of my favorite games ever. Sonic at its core is full of heart and love from the creators and fans and I am so excited for the future as now we are having our own little Sonic renaissance.

Damn as someone who loves Heroes and used to play it a ton, i watched your team dark vid the other day and it made me realize all the tiny little things the game has subconsciously conditioned me to do in order to minimize the jank with like the lightspeed dashes and the combat and several other gimmicks and that's gotta be why I'm able to have fun with the game lolll. Cheap deaths are one thing in videogames, but demanding that someone understands *exactly* how all the jank works in order to even have an alright time in a game is pretty stupid and i totally understand your placement. That said Heroes is peak S++++ tier and i will stand by that until i die 😤

It’s funny, because this feels like such a fascinating two way street. The game absolutely has polish issues, and I too often found myself using certain mechanics to offset them. But at the same time, *having* enough fleshed mechanics to literally out cheat the games jank is a testament to the brilliance of the team system. Worried about fucking up a rail switch? Flight form has enough grace period to make it back if you screw up. Tight combat on small platforms? Tornado -> Knuckles aerial punch is a safe dispatch option. Wanna make a jump that’s just a few pixels too far for tails flying, that’s pretty safe otherwise? Accelerate kick as sonic to whip the gap instead of dropping like a stone. It’s a game that’s both frustratingly unpolished yet *surprisingly* dense. And like Sonic’s best? Once you master that, you come to love it. Or, if ya can’t wrap your head around that style, you’ll probably dislike it.

I think this overall ranking of the games is actually fairly solid and I agree with most takes here. There are some few surprising aspects to the list like SA1 being above SA2 and Heroes being so low but I think the ranking is a fairly accurate gauge for these games quality in comparison with each other. Frontiers being number one on this list tho is no shock lol, Frontiers laid the blueprint out for the future of the series while also being a fun game to boot really makes it being number one justified ast least for me.

I liked how you said platforming is as important as movement and control for Frontiers. I think incorporating these and more like other combat options (depending on how the game will play) and movement options (including giving the characters hoverboards or even cars depending on how the game will play), style, story, and atmosphere is what can help the series in future titles.

Something I realized when replaying Sa1 and Sa2 in succession is that, beat for beat, Sa2 is a retelling of that lasy game's story just on a larger scale. - Powerful being from the past is caught in a tragedy - Young girl who is close with the being sacrifices themselves - The Being is put in stasis for a long time, harbering resentment for living beings - Being wakes up years later and teams up with Robotnik to gather the chaos emeralds - Sonic and friends catch wind of the plot and moves to stop it - Climactic battle in the sky - Tragedy strikes when the the Emeralds are gathered - Emeralds power is used to stop the big bad - in the end, the being from the past has a change of heart and disappears

I'll focus on the most important thing: Looking back on this entire history thanks to you, it makes it feel like Frontiers is the goal we've been wanting for Sonic since Adventure. I think Frontiers is the best thing for Sonic ever, and this doesn't mean we have to be STUCK with this ONE style of Formula! I wasn't a fan of the smaller map challenges, but the Birthday and final Horizon Towers and Cyberspace should be cleaned up and explored as the major "linear" parts in a Hub like world, especially for multiple characters. Dream Team and Shadow Gens showing us the improvements and potential of using Frontiers with those in mind as a base works. Sonic Team don't restrict the Open Zone idea to just one way(ha) but continue to experiment like with those 2 other games for variety and make this Sonic's True Identity all about ADVENTURE, SPEED and STYLE!

It was lovely to hear you talk about the games that i adore so much even if i dont always agree with you like in the case of heroes i still think that your list makes a lot of sense. Growing up it was hard for me to be so passionate about this hedgehog i am from venezuela and that place just normalize bullying to a level so crazy and i was that awkward kid who loved being alone with his games. Sonic games always had something for me that no other franchise ever had. The speed made feel powerful and like an adrenaline junkie😂 and the music is just so damn special for me on every game in the series but explaining that feeling to other people even to this day its hard i am an adult now im 26 and i still love it with so much passion but i have never found people who love this as much as i do and it is also hard to tell people i love this without them judging me that makes me feel alone af. Sonic Frontiers no honeymoon phase, no recency bias is by far my favorite Sonic game of all time so far. An open world to just speed around in & enjoy, going in and out of traditional linear stages at your own leisure, flashy high speed melee combat, and a narrative that genuinely cares about itself & its potential influence on the future of the series are all things I’ve always wanted to put into my dream Sonic game since I was in third grade. I literally screamed at the combat gameplay reveal because it felt like Sonic Team beamed by lifelong vision onto the screen. Edit: Don’t get me wrong, I know the game’s shortcomings and would absolutely change them but it has more good than bad overall.

21:06 Hey i don't know if you know this already,but sonic colors had it's acts split into pieces.Which explains the shorter lengths of the stages.also,the boring blocky 2d levels were supposed to be optional stages,but forced into the main story because of the game being too short without them.If you play the main acts of sonic colors (which has a better balance of 3d and 2d) i think you will be less disappointed with it's overall problems.

I’m in the middle of playing Unleashed off and on(because I’m busy) and I’m having a really fun time with it. I don’t understand why people hate the Werehog levels because I think it’s the best part of the game. I barely even notice how long they are. The music is phenomenal and so far the story is pretty good(Chip makes me laugh an unreasonable amount) Only thing that frustrates me is that the medals are required to beat the game, especially since some of the hiding spots are just bs. If they worked like the red star rings then this game would be top tier for sure

How the hell is sonic unleashed in S tier. Man this is one of the worst rankings. Sonic and the black knight being fire? Man did gaming go downhill if sonic unleashed is considered a good game. Honestly I hope they come out with a remake of unleashed just to honestly touch up with some stuff specifically really to do something with the medals and night time level lengths because honestly that's the main criticism I've been seeing about the werehog unless you are just not a fan of the form and general than just f In the chat the combo's that form can do be 🔥

I love Frontiers, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Generations, and Shadow The Hedgehog, and I like listening to what others enjoy about them. Really wish I could play Unleashed. I have a lot of similar opinions as this list, I got no argument. I hope Shadow Gens will be as good as it looks and well received I am itching so bad to have that game in hands RAHHH

Sonic Adventure 1 is my favorite Sonic game, so glad to see that in this video, lol XD Alot may prefer 2 more, but I prefer 1 more cause more characters. 2 only had 3 characters cause other 3 is the same play style, while 1 had 6 unique characters instead. Though, to be fair, 2 didn't had a bad one, while 1 did such as Big, so meh. I also had alot of enjoyment just messing around in the hub area too when I was a kid which 2 doesn't have sadly. Lol XD

It’s absolutely jank, but the cool thing about heroes is your kit is so expansive you can push back against it. Really neat game. Except the pinball haha you can’t fix that.

I'd probably just switched sonic heroes with the shadow the hedgehog (i hate slippery too in both of this games, but in heroes you can just change the formation to flying to fix your movement) And put black knight to C tier
