It's up to Lychee to decide. Selfishly, I would want him to stay, but in reality, I hope he can stay safe in the wild and find himself a mate, and ultimately start have his own babies to love.

Sadly the average life span in the wild, not biologically, for a squirrel as well as rabbits is only about a year. The laws of probability are stacked against them and old age, aka natural causes, is never how they die. They are eaten by predators or crushed by a car. It's that simple. I recognize and 'befriend' the birds, squirrels and rabbits in my yard and in doing so I've learned that little suburban dwelling furbearers generally will spend their lives in your back yard. Meaning their range is very small in these situations. Chances are when people see rabbits in their yard it's the same cpl rabbits all year. Then next year you'll see new rabbits and the old ones won't be around anymore. Right now I'm waiting to see if the one bunny I befriended last year made it thru winter, as well as my robin buddy. The birds seem to live long in the wild, not so much bunnies and squirrels. And fyi when I say befriend I just mean I recognize them individually by markings and pay attention to their behavior and patterns. I chat em up and sorta treat them like long distance pets. For example I consider weeding my garden feeding time for the robin. I befriended this robin when I noticed he was the one who first learned that me working in my garden meant worms were gonna be close to the surface from me turning over the soil. The robin would sit perched right there near me, and then as moved a little down to weed the next spot the robin would swoop down and forage the recently tilled area for worms. We formed a symbiotic relationship, the robin got food and I got giggles and joy. It got tona point where I noticed this robin would sometimes seemingly follow me to the store and stuff. Ok that sounds crazy but I walk most places if possible near me and I often will notice the robin with white eyeliner from my yard hopping on the grass near me. Then hell vanish but 10 minutes and 1/2 mile later there he is again. My assumption is he associated me with food and probably thinks I'll be digging up soil all over town when I go out so it follows me in hopes of worms. It may turn out that people with bird feeders and the like may have furbearers stalking them all around town lol. Y'all think you're seeing 25 different squirrels but it may just be one glutenous squirrel stalking you as a food source 😂

@@Thee-_-Outlierthat’s generally true. The most a wild squirrel will live (out in the wild) is three years. In captivity they can live many more years. I have wild rabbits that regularly have babies in the exact same spots every year. I also have fox that roam my yard. If the fox weren’t present the rabbits would absolutely take over. The rabbits are so used to me that I can walk out into the yard and they won’t run away. But I’ve been here for a few years and they know I won’t bother them. I have new baby squirrels here at this place every year that I feed. Animals will get used to you if you are kind and caring.

That seems unlikely given most squirrels don't survive past a year in the wild, same with rabbits. Yes they can live for a decade, but not in the wild. That squirrel stood about as much chance at survival in the wild as a calzone does on Chris Christie's plate

I’ve raised many squirrels, out of them I had two that simply refused to leave. I built them very nice homes that allowed them the opportunity to leave whenever they wished, they just never did. One was a male and one a female. The male was a bit more aggressive than the female, though he was still very much domesticated. I expected them to mate but they never did, to my knowledge the female never mated nor had babies. She was very gentle and somewhat timid, especially with other squirrels. The male lived about 5-6 year but the female lived to ripe old age of 11. The vet was truly surprised at her age, saying that they typically only lived 3-4 years. With the threat of predation removed he said that the male was more typical and the female was a bit of a marvel. I can’t speak for all squirrels as being pets but the female was mine of the best ones I’ve ever had.

I loved my time with each of them but they were boys and when they matured, they needed to be back in the wild. I did it slowly with each one. It was hard to let them go but they all did great. Seeing them take off, running up trees gave me so much joy ❤️

Such a beautiful story from a sweet soul. Personally, if I had the funds to create such a loving environment, I would have kept Lychee because the bond is there and the opportunity for Lychee to thrive in safe environment is there. Why break the relationship? Life is about exploring relationships and forgiving one another. If Lychee wants to leave, he could've done so and follow the companion. But like you said, Lychee is smart. Lychee found you to be his best companion and caretaker. He ain't going anywhere but near his human mama. 🤗🐿️❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

As an Australian I had never encountered squirrels until at age 30 I was in a park in Portland Maine - eating a doughnut. A squirrel came over to me. I know it's probably "not allowed" but I gave him bits of my doughnut and I feel we formed a real friendship... we interacted. What an amazing species and what an amazing story this is. She clearly has an amazing soul... Lychee can leave whenever he wants, but he's happy and safe. She's aware it's a wild animal and may decide to return (like Coconut did) but yeah - just lovely

The wild is, in my opinion, overrated. I believe an animal should have a choice. They are little people. Some are adventurous and love to hang out with their own. Some are homebodies just as some of us are. Animals in the wild often live shorter lives. That's because forest life comes with zero help and zero safety.
@MKF30
@MKF30 4 ай бұрын
I agree. Technically dogs and cats by origin were also "wild animals" yet we've domesticated them over centuries so I don't see the big deal with other animals being domesticated too if the animal chooses to and is happy with a human.

There are several videos on KZbin of house squirrels - squirrels who were raised by humans who refused to leave. Every single one is thriving living life as a pampered pet. If he wants to stay, he should be allowed to stay.
@Thee-_-Outlier
@Thee-_-Outlier 4 ай бұрын
Lol, my advice is it's unhealthy to personify animals this way. You're fooling yourself at the end of the day by projecting more complex reasons for animal behavior onto the animal. The tendency to do this is often born of your own fear and neediness. You're not a savior for some poor living creature, it doesn't see you as one and it is literally only there for the food and shelter. In fact as the lady in the video stated, her little squirrel was smart for knowing to stay indoors and not leave. It's not that it's a little baby human in search of a human companion and love, it's that it has everything it needs and there is no reason to leave. The real reason tho most leave is the irrational pursuit of a sexual mate. This lures them out of the safety of their environment, regardless if it's your house or some nest somewhere. When a squirrel or animal finally leaves it's usually because it's sexually mature and RDY to bang. You have a very unhealthy perspective, I sure hope you're a little girl not a full grown adult with such an idealistic and dopey opinion. That all aside I would love to see a squirrel nest under the hood of your car and see if you say "well the squirrel chose a home and who am I to decide where it should live" and then abandon your car to buy a new one just so this miniature fur-human doesn't have his freedoms encroached on lolol.....oh lordy lordy. You're more proof that idealism leads to stupidity and vice versa. In your case it's prolly the latter
@Thee-_-Outlier
@Thee-_-Outlier 4 ай бұрын
@@sister_bertrille911 I bet you a million dollars in most if not all of those cases I could get the animal to leave. It's not leaving because they don't want it to, and whether they know or admit it, their attempts to release that animal are self sabotaged. Lemme also point out that if a trained and experienced wildlife biologist offered to help and release their squirrel I guarantee you every single person running those channels you mentioned would find some excuse to decline that offer 🤔. If you don't believe me source a wildlife biologist and reach out to those channels, see if they are interested in making content about the professional release of their current pet squirrel. Lemme know how many of them agree to try. Lemme be very clear, none of those channels are making their release attempts in December and January aka mating season. If one thing is gonna make a squirrel leave a food and shelter utopia is a sexy squirrel of the opposite sex. Anyone trying to release a reluctant animal would be doing so when said animal is at sexual maturity and it's mating season; but you're gonna believe fairy tales regardless, aren't you??? Also let me point out that if you all think squirrels are so human then you should be thinking the most important thing for that squirrel is living like and among other squirrels. Do you know what happens to humans without human contact? Why would you torture a squirrel like that? What you call a choice in reality is fear. It's scared of the outdoors, its not choosing to live with a human. That's your twisted logic and not reality. You wouldn't think it's right if some aliens you can't communicate with took you to their planet and assumed because you didn't escape you were happy. Your lack of knowing what life is like with other humans on earth doesn't mean you made a choice not to rejoin them. It's almost like Stockholm syndrome for the squirrel. It doesn't know what life as a squirrel is so it cannot make a choice even if it had that capacity, so your opinion that squirrels should make their own choice is completely illogical and even hypocritical. Let the squirrel be a squirrel and then see if he comes back inside and doesn't leave again. Spoiler alert: He won't, and if you see him at your window peering it just know it's not because it misses you, it's because your house was a relief able food source it's returning to

Yeah, totally agree with this - all the pompous nature heads who are like, "they're wild animals and they're only happy in the wild" are in complete denial... There are loads of house squirrels on KZbin who are quite obviously happy, who absolutely love their humans to bits, and are totally living their best lives 'in captivity'. They have security and safety, low stress, emotional fulfillment - I mean, none of those nature dudes would give up the comforts of civilization to go live in a tree would they, lol?

I did see him a couple more times around my house but then was gone. The 2nd one I released and came back next day then no more. I still miss him. They're so sweet and loving but when they hit puberty, at least the male ones, they get loud and jumping all around, hormones? There were days that we held our breath, hoping that our injured raccoons would live through the night. So far, they all pulled through and have been released. They come back to visit and introduce their babies. Such an awesome feeling to gain the trust of a wild animal whether it’s a squirrel, fox, or raccoon.

I think Lychee is maybe slightly off, like he's much safer and better cared for by his rescuer. If she lets him out and then a predator gets him, she's going to be very sad. Many people have squirrels as a pet, it's not that uncommon.

As long as he keeps coming back, you should continue to love on him. As a rule, squirrels are not pets. But Lychee is no ordinary squirrel.
