Sherman was old, smelled bad and cost $30,000. This man thought he was perfect.

I had my own Sherman. His name was goose. Great big gray and white pit. He had been a bait dog because he wouldn’t fight. Then some people got him and acted like they saved him but they beat him and threw him down basement stairs. By the time we got him he would barely bark. But he was 125 lbs of love. With a 27 inch head. After we had him for about 5 years goose had a seizure. He passed with us all around him. Hugging him. Telling him we loved him. I miss him.

I am crying too!! I adopted a little female Pittie that looks a lot like Sherman....right down to the little nubby, badly cut ears. "Brie" (Bree) wasn't even a year old and was scheduled for euthanasia...I couldn't imagine not adopting her. She had scars all over her stomach, chest and inside of her thighs...a bait dog...smart enough to climb a fence to get away from her abusers. She was found wandering the streets...picked up by animal control and sent to a rescue group. She just turned 2 and is the sweetest dog...loves my cats, my 2 Chihuahuas; and at just 40lbs, she loves sparring with my 110lb Anatolian Shepherd who never had a good playmate until Brie came along. Brie also loves my chickens and goats...now, if she gets the chance she'll climb the backyard fence to visit the goats...but I keep an eye on her just because there's always a chance she'll head the other direction, down the drive and somehow escape my little farm. I cried watching this video, because I've seen Brie cower and roll on her back for even a minor reprimand, so I try to overlook her mistakes. I let her know all the time that I love her and think she's so smart and amazing, even after chewing her new bed into a thousand pieces. I don't think I'll ever understand how some 'humans' can subject such innocent animals to terrible cruelty, leading to so much pain, suffering, and too often, death. Sherman and Brie, and so many others just want to be loved. I can't imagine how painful it's been to lose Sherman...very heartbreaking. I'm glad the end of his life was full of love and protection!

We've had her since January 2016, but that bit of her history we cannot seem to make disappear in her mind. We adopted a puppy a couple days after we got her since she was So Lonely & missing for her 6 puppies that had been found with her on the street. Puppies all got adopted, but we wanted & needed her (Merry). Now she has a perpetual puppy with our Jack Russell mix (Pippin) that she mothers, plays with & fusses at.

Yeah, this hit me hard. I haven't cried like that since my dog passed two years ago. He died in my arms in the front yard while I told him, "It's okay. It's okay". I used to tell him that if he was worried he was in trouble or some noise scared him. @@queenjenna2696 The cable TV channel NatGeo Wild broadcast a show in Fall 2019 called “Dog Impossible,” starring this dog trainer/behavioral expert named Matt Beisner. He specialized in the “rehabilitation” of dogs that had been labeled as aggressive (often via neighbor complaints, but sometimes just because of willful ignorance & plain spite!), and in many/most of the cases shown, they had attacked and/or bitten people (usually their owners first!) and/or other pets. Almost every show, as Matt was agreeing to help a new dog and set of owners, he would state: “There is no such thing as a ‘bad dog’, only a dog that’s been trained & rewarded for fighting (often for years), or one who is acting out of extreme fear & anxiety, usually due to being beaten & severely mistreated.” I ultimately would understand 2 messages from watching his extremely loving & patient methods to (successfully, of course, since it *is* a TV show) rehab the dogs, many of them pit bulls (pure-bred or mixed): #1) dogs, like dysfunctional and delinquent people, only get to be labeled “impossible” when they’ve been forced/made that way by their human overlords; and #2) the corollary that there may not truly be “bad people,” only those forced early on to be, or eventually made into, violent criminals and/or degenerates. It was good food4thought, and I missed that show over the year of COVID (March 2020-2021).

So many will never know how much it means to have someone promise you that you’ll not be hurt again. Which is wonderful. Both hearing the promise and that there are so many that will never know the significance of it.

Im not a female, when i cry (which is extremely rare, even tho i would never hold myself back from crying) something very very bad and hurtful has happened to ME or my immediate FAMILY. You cant compare your own reaction, as a women, to the general population, especially men bc there are MAJOR biological differences in those situations. @@cryp0g00n4 Dogs were bred to love men, it isn't natural. They are the result of the ideal of love which most men possess for friends and family. A love which is unconditional, warm, sincere, and self sacrificing. The dog is the embodiment of the love in the hearts of most men. Men shaped the dog in the image of our own hearts. They're man's best friend because we made them to be. Because so few people are really worthy of our friendship, we needed to create something which was. The world is not a nice place. It shaped men for hunting and war. Our species would not exist if men loved as dogs love. You can only afford unconditional love when all of your needs are provided for. Besides, women never choose or never stay with nice men. When given the choice, they'll pick the violent criminal over the nice guy -- all other traits being equal. Our species would've ended long ago if they didn't. Either that, or we'd still be climbing in trees. That's the way of human sexual selection and it always has been. It's because of war and female hypergamy that we evolved. Without those evolutionary pressures, the brain would never have expanded and we wouldn't be here asking about "unconditional love" -- we wouldn't have the brain to arrive at the concept. There's no unconditional love among unrelated humans because there can't be. There would be no humans at all if there were no selection pressure in evolution to drive the necessity of intelligence in our species. Nature doesn't gift a species out of kindness. She gifts it by killing off the maladaptive genes of our kind -- one way or another. Only the most adaptive survive. That's the price of every trait which is possessed by every animal. This universe is a universe of scarcity. No matter the resource, it will be scarce in some environments or all of them. Humans evolved to cope with that scarcity by competition -- in which all animals engage. No animal in nature possesses unconditional love. Even with pairs of lifetime pair-bonded species we find they've been stepping out on each other -- DNA tests confirmed. Unconditional love is the romantic fiction invented by humans during times when humans believe there's no scarcity -- though there is always scarcity, it's just that sometimes you become isolated from scarcity over space and/or time. The short answer though, is there isn't unconditional love because there can't be. It can't naturally occur in this universe. You can create it, but it doesn't arise spontaneously, it has to be bred and then conditioned in dogs.

i tend to adopt rescued cats. This last one was difficult as she was this little tiny white kitten who was cowering in the corner when i came to her cage. I wanted to see her closely and the worker left and got huge leather glove and swooped in from overhead with her gloved hand grabbing her from underneath her chest sending this little animal into an absolute panic. We got into the room, and it took more than 30 min for her to decide we were ok enough to sniff and then sit near. it took a bit longer(10 more minutes) for her to decide that my lap was safe and sit on one leg. We realized this is the kind of action they used to "rescue" her as an infant and she never forgot the terror of that moment. But i felt there was something special about her and brought her home. It turned out she is special in that she can sense when i am going into a deep dissociative episode or a flashback. I Have CPTSD and there are days where i am not really "all here". The very first day she was home, i was fighting to not dissociate and she jumped up on my chest, meeeped directly into my ear and kept doing it until i paid attention to her, that sweet little sound kept me from going deep into a flashback and helped me ground myself a bit until i was able to pull out of it. AS time went on she began to notice other difficulties and would again interact with me to keep me safe. She has become my emotional support animal, she can sense the onset of a dissociation when i can't and stays with me until it passes. My tiny kitten is now a rather large non-obese cat of 13 lbs(literally big boned) and still thinks she is a kitten, laying on my shoulder, near my ear, when i need her help, and i am thankful that for whatever reason i felt pulled to go to the shelter that day

@@thatonekid6677 I've got 2 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ black cats! One 🐈‍⬛ I straight-up stole from a neighbor who was mistreating him. His name is Finnegan and he's about 13 now. I got... er, took... er, rescued him 3 years ago. The other 🐈‍⬛ just appeared in my yard in 2015, 8 weeks old. It's now 2021 and he's a 6 year old distinguished little man who's very proud of his shiny black fur. He sits so properly and keeps his fur so neat, but he'll go gangsta in 1.3 seconds if he smells rotisserie chicken. His name is Lucky Carl. So yeah, giving him up didn't work out. 🙄

My brother had a rescue Rottie that did that. I was house/pet sitting for him soon after he got her, and I accidentally kicked her when I swung my legs off the couch to stand up, and she started wailing like I'd hit her with a baseball bat. My brother did a great job of rehabbing her, and when I house/pet sat for him again the next year, she was happy and playful instead of withdrawn and scared. I loved that old dog.

For some of us, who have never known love, having a creature that loves to wake up to see your face, is the only warmth we have in this world. That's why we cry over them like they are our children, because they are. They are our light in this world, our love and sometimes the only reason why we wake up in the morning. I have a two year old pitbull I adopted. I know she'll have a long, loving and healthy life with me, but I cry, just about every time I think about that in fifteen, twenty years I'd have to let her go and my heart breaks into a million tiny pieces. Sometimes I wish that if she has to go, that I go with her because I don't know how to breathe without my beautiful girl. When you finally know love, true, unconditional, non-judgemental love, love you don't have to earn, losing that is so hard.

Anyone who's been blessed to love a doggo knows this man's pain. Higgins was our family's dog for 15 years. He loved all five of us. He somehow always knew who needed him most. He shared teen age study binges and heartbreak. He encouraged me to walk further everyday after spinal surgery. He lived in my mom's room when she got sick. When Higgins died, it felt wrong to replace him. It was two years before Lucy joined us. Our home is very different now. The kids are grown, my mom has passed. Lucy and I are constant companions. I tell her about Higgins and why he was so great.

Thanks for your comments. Higgins was absolutely the most empathetic dog I’ve known. Lucy seems to be the smartest. My husband travels for work a lot, so Lucy and I are often on our own. I spend time training her that I couldn’t with Higgins. Lucy is a Shepherd mix, so she’s smart as a whip. This dog isn’t a year old yet and she knows every command I can think of! Last week I saw a hula hoop and decided to buy it for her. This crazy dog jumped right through it the first time I held it out. She saw the treat, knew what I wanted and delivered. She’s even got my old crippled butt walking twice a day. Playing fetch is the only thing saving me! I wish everyone could experience the wonderful dogs I’ve known. God bless you.

My Grammy girl spent years in a no kill shelter because no one wanted a senior pit bull mix with cropped ears. When I saw her in the shelter my heart could not stop thinking about her. So I agreed to foster her and quickly failed at fostering. She was my best friend for 3 years. That old dog turned into a puppy overnight. She had such a zest for life and loved living out in the country where she could run. I knew she had been abused, I was having an angry phone call and saw her huddling in a corner where she had urinated in fear. I ended the call, cleaned the mess, and did everything to not raise my voice or make sudden movements around her. I miss her every day but I know she died knowing love and I have faith I will get those sloppy kisses again one day.
