I decided to return to where I used to fish for salmon with my dad in the Tidal Fraser River since the mid 90s for a day of pink salmon fishing.

Sorry for your loss Rod. My dad used to wake me up at 4am to go fishing. I hated waking up so early but once we got to the beach it was amazing. Catching fish was just a bonus. It's one of my fondest memories of my pops. I owe my love of fishing to him. I'm sure both our dads are in a place where the fishing is great.

Glad to see you back on KZbin, Rod. My dad is also the main reason why I love camping and fishing. He was more of a saltwater guy, but that was enough to get me hooked (no pun intended). The rest of it I can truthfully say was you - I was terrible at freshwater fishing and your trout videos inspired me to catch my first trout many, many moons ago. Nice to see Linda in your video - that was a epic burn - what's wrong with the photo?! 🤣

I couldn't get myself out to a lake or the river since his stroke..... but we gota move on . Wish you the best.

@@FishingwithRod Hey Rod. I hope to be up there soon. Late October through early November. My youngest daughter is having a baby girl. Her due date is like 12 days either side of November 1. And now the not so good. Last time we talked I had planned on texting you or messaging like this through KZbin. Anyway. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It was already stage 4 when they found it and metastasized into my bones. Prognosis was 1 to 3 years if treatments work. Well they aren't. At least the chemotherapy is not. So we're trying something new although I won't find out until Tuesday. Won't hurt my fishing skills. LOL. Little as they are but I'd love to at least meet and greet if that's OK.???

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 ай бұрын
Thank you. Glad to hear that the video has helped. The Tidal Fraser River is now closed to salmon fishing starting on September 19th. There is about a six week window for this closure for this portion of the Fraser River before it reopens up for coho salmon fishing (in late October/early November). This closure is done to protect a couple of endangered species (Thompson River steelhead) which are moving through the Fraser River. The peak of coho salmon runs usually happens in October. While the Fraser is closed, there are other places where you can go for coho salmon (tributaries of the Fraser River including Chilliwack, Stave and Harrison River, Capilano River etc), and you'd need a freshwater fishing licence to do this.

Hi Rod...Sorry to hear of your lose. I noticed in this video your cast distance which I thought was pretty darn far. I am using a G-Loomis 9' med. light with a Vanford 3000 and 12lb mono and throwing the same spoon you were but I am not getting the distance you are. What do you think the issue might be? Thank you for any help. Oh and I did catch a coho on my brand new Prime hardware Thank you
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 ай бұрын
Thank you. So the main issue is the 12lb mono as your main line, it's too thick which hinders the cast. If you switch it to PowerPro 15lb braided line, which has the diameter of 6lb mono, you'd cast a lot further. When I used to spin with mono, I'd use 8lb test Maxima Ultragreen, which would cast just fine. The only other problem with mono is the stretch. There's too much stretch and quite often the hook-sets ended up to be not hard enough. With braided line, there's zero stretch, you'd detect bites better, and the hooksets would stick more firmly. Good to hear about the success with Prime Lures too!

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 ай бұрын
Yep, I love this spinning setup for coho salmon too, on the Vedder. Coho up to the low teens should be easy with this rod. G.Loomis E6X 1082-2S STR is the rod. For reel, you can go with quite a few different models - Shimano Sahara, Nasci, Stradic, Vanford, depending on your budget. Size 2500 is my preference.
