I remember Wimpy in the 60s was a very badly run franchise of an American chain where almost any greasy spoon signed up for the branding but carried on with their low-standards greasy spoon ways and the modern enforcement of franchise standards was lacking. Strangely, the Wimpy EMEA (rest of world other than North America) Master Franchise was bought by J Lyons in 1953, they of the pre and post-war Lyons Corner Houses, the epitome of silver service catering for the masses and then a chain of tea shops selling their high-end tea, coffee and sticky buns. Their factories made cakes and buns for their tea shops and also sold direct to consumers via growing chain supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's. The company was innovative in business and when they 'stuck to the knitting' were incredibly successful despite being largely a family-owned and run business. But their eye was not on the ball running what was the very first UK national fast-food franchise, Wimpy. It rather did for Wimpy really and it actually was used by the big USA brands to move in and say they were different and better run and under Lyons control Wimpy survived from 1953-76. Since then, the Lyons company has been sold and re-sold and split into component parts and one operates Main Franchises of more confectionery/baked goods offers - Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin Donuts - both better run but still in the second tier of fast food franchises in my personal opinion. By 1989, with only 140 outlets, the Wimpy UK brand had fallen into the hands of Grand Metropolitan (now Diageo) who also owned Burger King and so all the Wimpy outlets were converted to Burger King - a better known and more successful brand and to a lesser extent outlets called Dr Beaks, an erstwhile competitor to KFC which never seemed to get any traction and faded away. Meanwhile, the old Wimpy brand had been growing from strength to strength in South Africa with 453 outlets and now owned by the SA group - Famous Brands, acquired the Master Franchise for Wimpy EMEA in 2007 and beginning in the Noughties began to open new outlets of Wimpy in the UK as well as across the Middle East. The UK now has about 64 outlets of Wimpy but they still seem to be located in low-rent as opposed to prime locations. If you have any memories of the old 60s-70s Wimpy or the newer reincarnations, please put your recollections in the Comments section.

Our wimpy in Scunthorpe didn't end up as a burger king it was turned in to a McDonald's franchise mid 80s, all the same staff etc worked there, even the interior wasn't changed much, but it offered inferior burgers and chips to the wimpy.. The last wimpy I went in to was about 15 years or so ago in Barking train station.

Especially if Im treating them at a restaurant. Don’t be cheap and buy your own damn food. Hands touching any denomination of money has nothing to do with the fact that most people wash their hands before eating and then handle money. Plus I never brought up germs. I am simply saying that if you take your kids out for dinner, it’s their dinner not yours. Or did you put stipulations on it like “ hey girls how would you like to go out to dinner? The thing about a historic Wimpy bar (of course this was back in the days before people invented customer service), was that you sat down, a waiter came to you and took your order, and the food was cooked to order for you. Nowadays, now we have modern customer service, you go to Mcwotsit burger, stand in line for long period, get given some precooked food, and you are supposed to clear up after yourself! I haven't eaten in a Wimpy for decades, but compared to Mcwotsits, I'd pick Wimpy every time!

What a bit of nostalgia. I remember being taken to the "Wimpy Bar" as they were known then more than fifty years ago now. I'm sixty-five. The sausage was called a "bender" and on the menu was something called a "bender egg brunch" which I think was a fancy way of saying: sausage, egg and chips. Also they had the exotic delights of a brown derby and rum baba for dessert. Gosh, how time has flown by.

The licking of the palm of his hand and putting it back on someone else’s burger turned my stomach, regardless whether it’s your child or partners burger I think most of us wouldn’t want someone to lick their palm then touch our food. Other than that in all honesty I was surprised to see that the meal prices are only about £2 more than when I went there the first time 15 years ago when I was a teenager. I only went a couple of times but remember thinking it was expensive essentially for lower quality than Burger King at the time and they charged nearly double BK prices. I’m surprised to see there was a meal deal for £9 that really good as I paid £10 for a burger and chips no drink 15yrs back. I live in London so yes things are more expensive but with inflation being what it is and wimpy never being cheap for what u get I don’t think it was bad for wimpy. When u start comparing other places that have the same standard food or higher is when it doesn’t seem decent but that’s because you’re paying for the name not for the subpar food.
@GreenoEats5 ай бұрын
I was careful to only touch the burger with my fingers after I licked that mayo, although I agree it’s hard to see that on the video. As for Wimpy, I just think you can get similar food cheaper elsewhere, or better food for that same money. It’s basically cheap cafe food for Five Guys prices.

Oh wow! Coke float! or is it a Pepsi? Mum used to buy American Cream Soda pop from the corner shop and a small block of Walls ice cream. We didn't have a fridge so it was devoured there and then. Must admit I didn't really like it. As for going to Wimpy, it was in Blackpool. It was Dad and the three of us. I can still remember the taste and smell of the burger and the glass bottle of Pepsi or Coca cola was amazing. Teengreeno looking lovely. Nice to see her. That place looks very clean and it's good to see the burgers and chips on a plate and not in a cardboard box. That egg was beautifully fried. That whole plate looked quite good. Fabulous view behind you outside. However, I almost slid off my chair at the price!!! 🍟🥓🍳🌭 Better than drinking a cup of tea, without sugar, without milk, without tea. Licking road wit tongue.🫖

OMG Greeno, what have you done making this clip, the last time i went to Wimpy was in 1973 and i was 7, my dad took me out for my Birthday as my mam was away for a very important job interview. I still have the receipt from Weybridge in Surrey to this day. My dad had the Wimpy grill at 36p I had a cheeseburger at 21p and then the Knickerbocker Glory at a massive 25p After drinks etc the total bill was a massive £1-01p. The sausage you talk of was called the Bender then, i remember it well, as you could have a Bender in a bun which us kids then thought so funny. This one is difficult for me 😥As a child, I grew up in Dublin, but whenever we came over to London my dear mother would always (without question or exception) treat us to a Wimpy; it was my treat for every trip we had to make to London. Now as a 50+ adult (no, I will not define the +) I still need (need not want) to frequently visit London; in fact I am in London about 60% of the time for work and when not working I am in Dublin. I am lucky enough to live within easy distance of 2 Wimpy restaurants; there used to be 3 but one closed to be replaced by a typical curry house 🤮 Greeno, your order for yourself was so close to mine! Great minds think alike! I hate it when reviewers review Wimpy and judge i solely on a burger; you need to try one of their mixed grills to get the full picture! My "always and never changing order" is a Wimpy Grill (not International, so no bacon and no lettuce) and a "Coke"! Whomever wants to start a disagreement between "Coke" and "Pepsi", I shall gladly ignore you! I then always follow it with a Brown Derby and a Filter Coffee. So my bill is always £20+ just for me. However, for me it is about memories of my best childhood moments and they are priceless! So if it was £100+ would I pay it? Probably yes! Albeit less often. Currently and on average I go to Wimpy once every week; usually on a Wednesday since that is their special deals and new item launch days; even if the price is irrelevant to me, I am no eejit. 😝 If I want a Pork Bender, I will order a Pork Bender. Bendy my @$$ Given the other unsavoury use for the word "Coke", will they ban people from using that word and throw them out? The whole world has gone mad with all this PC nonsense! So it is always going to be a 5/5 or 10/10 etc "trip down memory lane" from me, but I totally respect your 3/5 without question, so thank you for the review and the "Greeno Green Light". And thank you for not just relying on a boring old cheese burger for the review; as too many often do, because although there is nothing wrong with a Wimpy cheese burger and I do like them as a quick takeaway snack, that for a review would have been a bit daft. 👍
@GreenoEats5 ай бұрын
As always, thanks Gary for your interesting comment. It's been fascinating to me this evening to read so many people's memories of Wimpy from back in the day. I am pleased it evoked happy memories of your childhood trips - although it seems with your continued visits to Wimpy you didn't really need me to do so :-) I am glad I took the kids with me, firstly because it meant they got to share in my nostalgia for the place, but also that it meant I could order 3 different things to try (I would have gone for the International Grill anyway) - they enjoyed the food too. A bit like yourself, I will always order a Coke, even if I know they only have other brands - for me there are certain things which transcend brands.... my Dyson is a hoover for example :-) Having tried it for the first time in years I will return, not so much because I think it is great quality food, but just because of the memories it evokes for me too, and to be fair the kitchen did a decent job with the ingredients they were given.
