Isaac has always been like this, you had to keep in mind everything that you've picked up. The game doesn't hold your hand at all. It was part of the high skill cap in my opinion. The game is definitely easier now that you have those options, which lets you focus on other parts of the gameplay.

Beginning of 2020 I decided to do a run for the hell of it and I played it 28 hours that week and kept up that amount of gameplay for like a month and a half, while also going to school. Its a fun game but if you aren't good at it, it isn't fun imo.

That feels like an... unfair review of Isaac. A good part of the difficulty is only being able to shoot in the 4 cardinal directions. There are a few items that allow you to shoot anywhere, but they come with their own downsides. I also think that the unknown nature of the items is fun, as it adds another layer of skill; learning what they all do and how they synergize with each other to make powerful combos (such as ludo + brimstone). Plus, even if that’s not your thing, the top mod in the workshop is a mod that tells you what every item does by standing next to it. Granted, to use the workshop instead of third-party loaders you need the afterbirth DLC, but it’s COMPLETELY worth it for the amount of content it adds.
@aaawwawa9819

Isaac also shines the more you unlock characters and items. It's also a great time to get into isaac because of the repentance dlc announcement which is planned to be released Q1 of 2021 in which they claim "The Binding of Isaac: Repentance is so huge, so new and so feature-packed that it makes previous updates look like prequels. There are more features, improvements and new secrets, too many secrets, than most games would include in an official sequel! It's an immense amount of new content to explore, even if you're at 1,000,000%!" so go to the steam store and buy it right now!!
@mushroomcube623

You can also use platinumgod.co.uk to easily find info about any item, you can even search by appearance if you don't know what it's called and are afraid of picking it up in case it's bad. So it's kind of a valid complaint but it also doesn't really make a difference and it can also be fun to experiment without knowing what everything is. The first complaint about shooting controls is absolutely unfair as different shooting would totally change the game (in a bad way imo).

I feel like Wizard of legend is one of the roguelites that's massively polarizing. I personally love the game, and the skill cap is low enough that I was able to play the co-op with my non-gamer girlfriend, but I can understand how some people wouldn't like it given some of the strange mechanics, and decently high knowledge requirement. Love the whole video though, thanks for exposing me to new rogue lites!

Whenever you say "Classic rougelikes" have started the genre, its more of a modern resurgence. The genre begins in describing games that were similar to UNIX based PC game: Rouge. A newsgroup (email), for players of Rogue (1980), Hack (1982) ever hear the term "hack 'n slash"?, Moria (1983, Tolkien stuff), created and defined the term "rouguelike" and the influence would later lead to things such as Diablo (1997) and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (2005) in between the years. All this comes way before Spelunky (2008) existed. If you read all that history, give a go at Crypt of the Necrodancer, it was unlisted in the video and is a real fun one, play on the beat to reach the stage end, fantastic music. Coin Crypt is a gem in the rough, a deckbuilding style game with lots of characters each having their own ruleset to the game.
@bbbbbbb51
@bbbbbbb51 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like rhythm games appeal to people who like music but don't play instruments. If you do play instruments rhythm games feel extremely tedious often just relying on the simplist of rhythm mechanics as the core gameplay. When you've practiced music to a metronome for countless hours, having that same idea in a game becomes extremely unnatractive.
@sirknightdude2587
@sirknightdude2587 3 жыл бұрын
@@bbbbbbb51 There's a lot more complexity to the game, its a roguelike that forces you to play to a tempo, you can buffer inputs and skip beats, so its not so much about timing or matching inputs as it is the driving force for the game that keeps everything in motion.

@@InsertReviews Ring of Pain is alot of fun, it'll only take you about 5 hours to beat a run of it on normal, but it's very interesting, being more of a puzzle than a fighting game. Not a huge amount of depth, but a standard run will only take you 15-30 minutes, so it's REALLY good to just pick up and put down, which I think is one of it's greatest strengths.

Great video, you covered a lot of my favorites very accurately and to the point. I'm currently trying darkest dungeon for the first time, your critique hit home on that one. I've played a ton of roguelites/likes since 2011, so here are a few obscure, underrated or possibly just Steam backlog games for you to check out: Children of Morta, nice narrative dungeon crawler roguelike with tiered progression, very fun for a playthrough or two ( one playthrough is probably 10 hours), but not a long hauler. Our Darker Purpose: like Isaac with less variety and more deliberate decision making. Slower paced dodge heavy gameplay. Streets of Rogue: the most varied playstyles I've ever seen in a roguelike. There is progression in terms of character classes(27 or so classes), unlocking modifiers, etc, but it ends up being very skill and knowledge based. Noita: you are a wizard exploring a cave. Literally every pixel can interact with different abilities and spells, meaning everything can be broken, blown up, acidified, etc. Very freeform with basically no progression, just the classic "one more run". Finally, my roguelike of 2020, even over Hades, which I adore and play daily... Synthetik: Legion Rising. It's a twin stick shooter with 8 classes, each with their own skills and playstyles. Those classes each have their own perks, of which you select 2 per run, their own guns and gadgets. The gun play is phenomenal once you get the hang of it. You have to manual reload, for instance, and you can't be accurate while strafing or dodging. Very intense, fast paced shooting with a bunch of weapons and gadgets to find each run, each of which somehow manage to feel distinct and customizable. Of all these games, Synthetik is the must play. Enough of my roguerant, keep up the excellent content dude

I love Roguelike/lites, both classic/traditional and modern, ever since ADOM. You've pretty much covered the modern games. For traditional roguelikes, I would suggest Shiren the Wanderer, Brogue, Rift Wizard and probably ADOM. ADOM will take a bunch of tries to get the hang of. One tip would be to use altars to turn most of your bottles of water into holy bottles.

+1 for Shiren and ADOM. And of these more "classic" playstyle roguelikes I would suggest two more: Sword of the Stars: The Pit, and Tangledeep. And if one is curious to see where it all started, and to have context of the evolution of the genre, and it's cousins try Nethack ( the most "current" reincarnation of the barebone OG Rogue).

Just want to say that the way the levels are generated in spelunkey, there is *always* a path from the entrance to the exit. Like that is literally how the game was coded, you will never run into a map where you couldn’t progress and get stuck. Now, you coouuld drop into a snake pit without any bombs and get stuck in there. But then don’t jump in the snake pit! 😆

Loved it! Genuinely informative. I would defiantly recommend Noita. It's a 2d roguelike in which every pixel of the environment can be interacted with. For example you can set grass on fire, and the smoke from the fire will collect on the ceiling above you. After the fire burns out if the smoke hasn't dissipated it will start to collect as condensation and drip back to the ground. Definitely check it out.

Do you perhaps know Iratus: Lord of the Dead? It's quite a bit like Darkest Dungeon, but with you being the ancient horror, in this case the titular arch-necromancer Iratus, which is trying to escape the dungeon. Combat reminds me of DD, but the progression through the story is a lot more akin to Slay the Spire with you having a map with branching paths. What I like is that instead of having to watch for the stress of your minions, the mindless undead you command can damage the health or sanity of the enemy, both of which being viable playstyles against most enemies.
