I have had a Chinese diesel heater in my van for 3 years, best thing I ever bought. Medium size van on lowest setting uses approx £1 per night, 11pm to 8am. Best buy 👍🏻

My heater is turning up this coming friday, when i have it all plumbed in i will attempt a similar video but it will be at altitude, where i am is 4242 ft above sea level and it is currently about -2. Thanks for the time you spent making this experiment i bought one of these heaters for our family tent and there is know way i could run this flat out, even at minimum it gets hot, but what i love about this heater its relatively small ,gives out great dry heat and its remote controlled, its like having central heating in a tent, the only negative is the exhaust in a funny place but overcame this by wrapping it in heatproof bandage, I would recommend one of these heaters.

I'm playing around with one of these at home.. we use them for work in our sandwich vans for the ovens.. i have fitted a solar panel with a controller to top up my 2 battery's i have connected together, seems to be working rather nicely.. wifey wont let me cut holes in the house though to get it from in the garage were i am using it at the moment. But here its nice and toasty in the garage.. Great video

Very interesting experiment, I’m considering fitting a diesel heater to my van as a 2nd heat option, given it was flat out that’s not too bad consumption I don’t think as you say you shouldn’t need to run it flat out. All the best, David 👍

I've been running mine from 6 pm yesterday on Alpine mode level 2 until today, 1pm, and i used approximately less than a quarter of a tank of diesel. I tried a 70 kerosene and 30 diesel mix, and i actually found it runs more economical on just the diesel. That was my findings anyway. Be interesting to hear others' views. Im now going to run in automatic mode at 20c set and in Alpine and see what tomorrow the results are. Great videos and chat on here with like-minded real people using their brains and sharing the knowledge. That's what life is about. ❤️👌👍 Ps mines a garage measuring roughly 18ft by 20ft uninsulated single brick.

IV been running mine for one full winter...this is my second. I find running mine on lowest setting all time far better.....but every day fun it flat out for 20/30min to burn things off. As we speak mine has been on 21hrs (5kw unit) and used approx 1.5lts. My 18/12 wooden shed is at 22c......bit hot for me. But IV also found starting up when really cold it uses bloody loads as your experiment has shown.

I've just tested mine on low then on Alpine mode it's even more economical. See the next video in a few days. Alpine mode slows the pump down quite a bit..

Thanks very much. That's the most accurate way to check. I see a lot of videos using the calculation method, and using the pump pulse frequency and volume, but that's assuming the pump volume delivery and frequency are exact. Nothing beats a fixed volume of fuel and seeing how long it lasts, for accuracy.

Thank you for the video, considering its running on full, its not terrible, I think the main focus for most people would be how well insulated the space is. Running maxed out even for 10 minutes it would totally heat up my well insulated brick shed from 0 to 22c and keep it warm for another 3-4 hours. If you have a large space with very little insulation then a vented wood burner is probably better (if you are allowed one) though the convenience of a automated system cant be understated. The one thing with these to be careful, is that they have a shutdown sequence, if its not followed properly then the main board can fail, so a cheap UPS is definitely a good add if you get a lot of power failures.

yes your righ. my shed is not insulated at all and it still keeps it warm ..you have to go through the shut down sequence your right its very important it cools the unit down properly

I'm not extremely confident, I can keep it in the 60's running on medium (fahrenheit, the superior unit of measurement) while the outside temp is ~45, I'm hoping it can keep up at 20 degrees or below

I've got this very model in my 07 transit, even on number 2 fan it gets tropical! A full tank lasts surprisingly long I'd recommend this heater happily was simple to install too 👍

Funny I sang its praises, and it died yesterday. control panel dead. it lasted 1.5 years running daily during the late fall/ winter. oh well $175 totally worth it ill get another. then saving for a Wabesto 45k hydronic setup next year ~ 4500 - 6 grand for everything... ouch, but is really what the boat needs. 3 zones and hot water for a ~ 36watt Draw.

I run on paraffin mostly, but this year paraffin has gone from €22.90 to €40.99, so the plan is to go back diesel this year. On test earlier in the I found the tygon tube had rotted, we've run it for three years and it has been completely reliable. The tygon has been replaced with kuni brake pipe. Just a quick tip, if you have a small tank, drill the top not the bottom, it stops leaks. Other wise an outboard motor tank is easy to handle

I had a small 1kw German diesel heater in the foc"sle of a trawler i had, to replace a gas heater that was awful for condensation and it was the best thing since sliced bread, and if i remember correctly it only used 1 tenth of a litre an hour. It was second hand and had come out of a lorry.

@@VANFLIPPINGTASTIC to be honest every setup will be different. Your test at flat out shows worst case/ most fuel scenario. A 1.5kw fan heater that's flat out is for 2.5hours is 4.25 units at 32p per unit would be £1.36. Initially that doesn't sound to much different but I'd guess the deisel heater would need to work much less to maintain a constant temperature.

And for the tip to use red diesel instead of the more heavily overpriced regular diesel. I did not try to calculate it, but it seems to be cheaper than heating off propane gas.

It's much cheaper than propane and like I said in the video there is no need to run it full power like I did ...a caravan will only need this to run on its lowest setting ...you will get around 7 hours a litre from it on low ... in the next video I will test it on low setting

my trucks all have had webaso or espar diesel heaters that run all night in cold weather found that an electric heater plugged into a generator is quieter but takes gasoline 1.2 gallons for 8 hrs the diesel heater is half again more efficient but uses truck batteries through the night which works but a suitcase gen in front of pass seat with heater and battery charger if needed is a much more peaceful sleep

I have not tried myself but there are quite a few videos on using waste oil for fuel. 50/50 mix mostly. They say it is more efficient. Kerosene, I believe, won't lube the pump properly.

It does not burn as hot as fuel oil. Which is pretty much diesel. I saw people reading temps on waste oil, thinned with some diesel, and they claim and show it to burn hotter. Once again grain of salt. Later.

Just for info. Based on the 1 litre per 2.5 hours diesel consumption, the maximum theoretical instantaneous heat output of the heater (without efficiency losses) works out at about 4.2 Kw. So a fair bit below the stated manufacturers rating. But still, it does the job!

I just did a google search how much kw 1 liter diesel has: "One litre of diesel fuel (auto) has an energy content of approximately 38 MJ - which approximates to 10 kWh (using a ballpark figure) but the efficiency of conversion into kinetic energy is only about 30% - that is better than petrol which is typically 25% depending on the design".

I am in CT, on the coast(windy). It heats my cottage 700SF running flat out at 5.4HZ, same results of usage. My total Liters usage including last Feb., March, Apr. & May started it up again 3 wks ago... 242.868L and Fuel Rate of 0.428L/Hr. I keep the cottage at 23C or 73F. When it reaches temp I shut it down with remote until it drops to 20C or 68F and I turn it on again. The cottage has electric heat and when my bill hit $680.00 last Jan. I pulled the trigger on this jewel. My Feb Bill dropped to $230, I still heat my outdoor Jacuzzi to 40C which I know is a waist but is why my elect is still high. At night I shut all heat off and when I wake at 6AM the house is at 14C or 58F, I run the jewel for 2 or three hrs and I am back up to 23C. I can tell you that the wind makes all the difference, sucks the heat right out of the house even though it is well insulated. Hope this info helps...

I would be interested to know more about the fumes inside (where there any with the door closed). Also that ticking of the fuel pump. Once installed can that ticking be heard and how loud is it? Good to see it doesn't use much fuel and of course running on low it will use a lot less hopefully.

i have the exhast near the door and it does let fumes in . this is only a temp set up and the exhast could be routed out of the way.. no fumes at all with the door closed ..the ticking is anoying i must say but you can install that outside

I have the exact same heater been running for 18 months so far 12hours a day on setting 1 I get about 8 days out of 20 l diesel on 3 about 5 days. The only problem with this heater is smokes like a chimney on start up been like that since day one . I expect about another year out of this one have had others least well over 3 years. I was heating a 6x12m room 3m tall with 3 heaters outside temperature down to 0c inside a constant 26c . Now only need to heat a 20ft container insulated so 1 heater should suffice

@@VANFLIPPINGTASTIC my heaters run for around 12 to 100 hours a week especially in the cold weather ,I heat my home for the last 3years using kerosene as this does not soot up ,I had to turn the stainless gauze where the heater plug sits in as that can deteriorate, also I use 25 ltr drums just a hole drilled in the cap for the fuel pipe and a pin hole to breathe.

the unit draws around 2 to 3 amps .its a 100 amp battery .the electric it uses is very mall amount . it would draw 30 watts if pluged in with a 12volt transformer

The models I've looked at work out typically to be around 15p per kW hour which is anywhere from half to a 1/3 of current electricity costs based on the at the pump average UK cost of £1.85 per litre. You can use things like filtered oil from your local fish and chippy which is illegal and requires a license so I'll leave that one up to you :P Either way these things are awesome (although have guilt about burning diesel)

So on this maximum setting, at around £1.71/litre diesel, it costs about 68p per hour to run (at approx 6.6ml diesel per minute), would be interested to see what the consumption is at just above minimum setting. If you could get it down to 10p per hour then we're talking pretty good heating efficiency. Also have to take into account how much battery power it uses.

If you use white diesel yes .I have got kerosine for 89p a litre from a heating oil supplier. Red os 1.35 a litre .. Most heating oil suppliers will sell you kerosine if your buying 20 litres...89p..saying all that it's not often you need to run it flat out..

A very good test :) And it shows clearly that it delivers about 4kw and not 5 as said. To deliver 5kw you need to burn about 0.5 liter each hour. Diesel contains a little more than 10KWh so it should stop after about 2 hours. But still not bad

Thank you for doing this test. It is really amazing how economic that heater is! So basically 200ml per half hour, that's 2.5hours on 1 liter and on massive hot setting! Very curious to see your test now on minimal setting, how that is heating that space and if it's convenient enough on the lowest setting and how much less it will use. These pumps actually tell how much their pumping capacity per tick is, and at your thermostat you can set the frequency in Hz of ticking over. Thanks again! I got the same unit installed on a boat.

When will someone make a sauna and see where the thermos limits are. Hot box test please with a carbon monoxide alarm or place the heater outside for and fire thing too. I b😊ought one for my Mac Gregor sailboat and use it in my garage in the winter( now is minus 1 outside) . The carbon monoxide levels could be higher at full blast and buddy has his exhaust near the open doorway . Running a new heater flat out for 2.5 hours is,,,,,,,not the best way to test it and break anything in. It would have been awesome to see him be all sweaty and having an ice cold drink after an hour at Mach 6 and a temperature gauge in the room. Cheers mate and enjoy. Btw, I built an exhaust and a pipe riser over the roof to help with the exhaust/ emissions. You can use common drain down pipe if you like or anything really just keep the silencer outside if you are going to use it and let it run through the cool down cycle before shutting off the power. Ok next experiment,,,heat a hot tub with a diesel heater,,,,,in 3,2,1! Hope you don’t mind my comments and thanks for the video

Cheers to that, these little heaters are a fun toy for many in a damp cold environment. The best part is they are so cheap and offer an adjustable heat source that dries the air. I used a sink drain tube at 1 1/4 inches by 6 long through the wall then put the stainless pipe through that as a double wall. I got my friend to tig wield my silencer except the vapour drip hole. My next task is install it in my sailboat for the spring season. Keep smiling, keep laughing, keep sweating , even on a cold winters day !

Great video thanks. Wondering if the type of fuel used in these heaters makes a difference to consumption. Reason I ask is I know that an oil burner tank filled with a different type of kerosene , to what the oil burner was calibrated to use,can result in higher fuel consumption. Reason is the viscosity of the fuel. Bought one of these heaters a few years ago for a camper but life got in the way and never used it. Frankly I never thought to use it for home heating. May experiment on the house and if it’s a success buy a second unit for the Landy.

The maximum consumption should be pretty much the same because the pump always does the same strokes per minute and every stroke pumps a fixed amount of fuel, unless you use a something like cold used engine oil with high viscosity, in that case the pump may struggle sucking the fuel which may result in lower fuel consumption and also lower heat output.

So as long as it consumes 0.4 liters per hour, you get 4kW in total, probably 3-3.5kW is usable heat output, the rest gets wasted as exhaust heat...

These heaters are inclined to coke up the vaporising gauze if run on low settings for long periods, then they make a lot smoke and stink. Not sure what shares availability is for new meshes, but the sévices parts for eberspatcher heaters of which these seem to be knock off of, cost as much as a new Chinese heater!

Would an air-air source heat pump be cheaper to run. My air source heat pump heats my whole 2 bed flat and uses roughly 500W, checking the electric meter I worked it out at about 12 - 15p per hour to run at a 35p per KWh tarrif. Compared to my underfloor heating it saved me £60 a month on electricity when I was on a 27p per KWh tarrif. I don't use the underfloor heating now.

So the UK is looking at £0.34 per kwh for elect and £0.10 for gas and you are showing £0.15 for red diesel making these chinese heaters a viable option for electrically heated homes - that is assuming it is a 5kw heater rather than 2kw or 8kw..... Here's more info on fuels I've tried in the UK spec Vevo 5kW unit, with stock settings (with the controller-new type, late 2022, without the antenna signal indicator): Best fuel, most heat, Kerosene=heating oil=jetA1=paraffin Diesel, red or standard next best Brake fluid, DOT3 diluted with 10% petrol next best Old dirty engine oil diluted 20% with unleaded petrol next best Transmission fluid/old gearbox oil diluted with 10% petrol next (but smelly) Old gunwash thinners with 10% old engine oil to give it some lube properties not very good Old petrol with 10% old engine oil, also not very good. Acetone, brake and clutch cleaner (trichloroethylene- don't breath the smoke at all) or alcohol/meths don't really work at all. With all of the hydrocarbons, it is pretty obvious that there is way too much air running through the combustion chamber, because the exhaust pipe gets really hot (wasted heat). If the combustion air inlet is choked a little, while still maintaining a lean and clean burn (at max fan speed), the exhaust temp drops while the heat exchanger actually gets a lot hotter. More time for the hot combustion gases to transfer the heat into the heat sink, as the gas is moving slower. Oh and throw away the little fuel filter they supply, as it doesn't filter anything! Get a proper fuel filter... If anyone knows how to crack advanced settings on the new controller unit (without antenna signal indicator), please post! 👍🏻😀🇬🇧

There’s two types, gas oil 590 is road fuel with a dye added the standard is a lower spec. Only found that out myself a few years ago. Will be testing that soon .but as a guide I am sure it draws about 2 amps once running .so a 100 amp battery drained to 50 percent should last 25 hours... the future test will give a more accurate figure.

On the pump is written the dose most are 0.020ml per click. On the display is the frequency of the pump on the setting you are using. Eg 3hz x 0.02ml = 0.06ml/sec x 60 = 3.6ml/min x 60 = 216ml/hr. It's simple maths and the most accurate.
