I bought an m3 in 2008. fucking thing died on my way home from the place I bought it. the main things were: vanos leaking oil, as well as the whole engine, air filter had probably never been changed, holes in the exhaust system, the carbon fiber air intake was broken and leaked, the car had also been crashed at some point. I payed about 5-6000 pounds roughly calculated. sold it for about 2000 6 months later. drove about 900 kms one way to buy that car, and I was in the middle of a cancer treatment. too bad the guy who sold it totally fucked me. so don't feel too bad about yours! I drive an impreza today and am fully recovered from both the m3 and the cancer.

Really sorry to see that it went so poorly for you man! I think you just happened to get a terrible "base" car. No matter what, if you are buying a 13+ year old car it's going to need a few things changed. My total cost for my 2003 BMW 325i? Less than $5,000 and it runs stellar (bought for $2,500; $2,500 in parts). Furthermore, in essence it is mechanically brand new. In the end it is a great value, but ONLY if you can work on it yourself.

BMWs are usually abused by their owners, especially those who don't intend to keep them for too long. Ask anyone that has bought used BMWs before.
@jose_s_bam79388 жыл бұрын
Well, I always thought that a M3 was a special kind of car worth keeping, but maybe that's just me. I've had plenty of cars as well, and the ones I really enjoy I tend to keep them. I now have for "investment purposes" (that's what I say to my wife anyways) a 12yo Lexus, a 20yo Nissan, a +30yo Toyota and a Porsche of the same era, and a 45yo MG. I have had most of them for over 10 years. The last one I got was the Porsche a few years ago and it had only one owner and it was in mint condition. No BMWs though. =D I already had my share of lemons. But I would love to have a BMW 850, a Z3 Mcoupe and a Z8. Maybe one day, who knows?
@jose_s_bam79388 жыл бұрын
A Sportcross. Love it. Still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Yeah, I share your pains. Taxes, insurances and out of the ordinary maintenance are a pain in the ass. But changing cars regularly still hurts too. If you buy used you get the good side of devaluation, but if you repair and do proper maintenance on a car for a while you will almost surely lose money if you sell it (there are exceptions, obviously). And then when you buy another you just don't know if it's a good buy or not until a few months later.

You have to realize that this was a performance car, it wasn't driven softly and it had good and bad owners. Some people have no clue what so ever i've realized that over the years of buying used cars and bikes but the best thing is to invest a bit more money for a car that was well looked after. You will rarely find a guy selling his vehicle that he invested a lot of money into it, especially for a good price as these things are expensive to maintain.. But nothing of this car is serious, everything can be fixed, it would be alarming if the engine or transmission were worn shit... What's more 6900 pounds doesn't sound much for an M3... Sometimes investing in a better condition higher priced, lower mileage one is a good idea.
@glazuna8 жыл бұрын
+glazuna update: seeing the end of the video it really came costly to you but that's mainly because you let professionals took the job. If you would do it yourself with aftermarket parts, it could be up to 3x cheaper.
@FranksShitBoxCollection8 жыл бұрын
+glazuna Yeah but if they have the money why not? But then again since they had the money to fix it up why would they be bitching about it?
@chrisallot668 жыл бұрын
+glazuna So that's almost $10,000 usd for an M3 with 150,000 miles. That is pretty absurd by any logical persons standards. ''Well the outside looks good.'' If you own a 10 year old+ BMW, it leaks oil. Just one of those facts of life. Generally, unless you're capable of doing all the work, it's not worth fixing. Starts with valve cover, then oil pan gasket, oil filter housing, and finally, timing cover. Unless you ave the time, tools and expertise to replace the timing cover gasket, don't fix any of the others unless it's major.
@IAMJAKETRIMBLE8 жыл бұрын
Not really a lemon at all... For a 20 year old, 5 owner performance car it's pretty good. The rust is really the worst part... All of the other things are common E36 wear and tear that's been neglected by previous owners. I totally agree you over paid but it's it pretty good shape overall.

Even if he had paid 4x the price for a "perfect" example there would have been something on the list that needed to be repaired. Cars are complex machines. They are hard enough to make perfect out of the factory. Add a few years of age to a vehicle and that "perfect" target becomes more and more expensive to maintain. While there were a few things that needed attention on the list it would have been very easy to fix many of the things on that list without breaking the bank.

Here's how to enjoy a bmw. Lease or buy bmw with all or partial warranty remaining. If bought, sell at end of warranty. One thing I've learned about boats and bmw's. An old one with repairs costs the same as a new one with payments. A never ending nightmare of repairs and parts that are expensive as hell.

+JohnDark93 Pre-purchase inspections are usually under $100, which is nearly nothing compared to the issues they can turn up.. Most shops charge a fairly low rate for them because they're hoping you'll have them perform the repairs they deem necessary. Short of the VANOS test, anyone with 2 eyes and a lift could have inspected that car and told him not to buy it.
@markalmelo8 жыл бұрын
+Maxwelhse and after a lot of inspections you still dont have a car because its an old car. The most expensive repair is the vanos and als the mechanic explained almost Every BMW has problems with it and you can drive it without problems. he could also just buy An m3 at this garage and be sure there are no problems, but looking at the website and prices i'm guessing that you cant buy a similar car there for the same ammount.

On the strength of this video, I used Munich Legends for a pre-purchase inspection of my 2011 BMW M3. They inspected it thoroughly, produced a report, and I got the dealer I was buying the car from to sort out the couple of issues (non-cosmetic) found which was 1 tyre to be replaced and rear brake discs and pads to be replaced. Since I bought the car, it's been sweet as a nut! Clearly they did a good job on the pre-purchase inspection. Happy days! :)

All the leakage and rust are common for any vehicle at that age but it can be pricey for BMW. I bought my car 9 years old, I had to replace both control arms and ball joints/bushings, took care of few gaskets and seals (done everything myself), had alignment by shop and now car drives as smooth as new. BTW doing repairs yourself and picking up your own parts is the way to go for out of warranty BMWs. If Engine and transmission are good, it's not a lemon.
@thebestsin8 жыл бұрын
***** Every car has it's own common issues, possibly the previous owner did most of the repairs on your car. there's always going to be maintenance for 100+k mileage cars and we're talking about 3.5L engine compare to 1.3L. BMWs are considered luxury sports car, every component has to be in it's best shape for the car to perform as it should. by that I mean when I drive 40mph or 90mph car should be smooth either speed. I live in the DC area, road are always a mess with potholes, so if my ball joints and shocks go out, I wouldn't be surprised. I had ford focus before, I did not care a bit about it. sold it at 190k mileage no oil leak what so ever, but it was shaking so bad 50+mph. as for rust, yes. normally a car in colder temperature has been painted will most likely to get rust. Japanese cars are one of the most reliable cars on the planet while BMWs have expensive maintain. but there's no comparison in performance.

This is ridiculous! It's not a lemon, it is a 12 plus year old car, this mechanic is getting paid to note down evry bit of rust etc. Any car this age would have all this and more even if it has hardly been driven, You would be lucky that it doesn't need a gear box or engine rebuild, A car this age would need a full respray to look it's best anyway. Stuff can start to rust within two years if it gets any type of scrape or damage.
@video99couk6 жыл бұрын
More rust than my 24 year old Celica. That BMW looks quite poor for its age.
@mattevans16436 жыл бұрын
I have a 33 year old MR2 with less rust, and miles. Still on the original engine and transmission. Yeah metal naturally rusts, but if taken care of, it doesn't. The paint is original in amazing condition. The suspension is fucked, but i didn't care when i bought it. The difference between my car and this car. Mine is a Toyota, this is a BMW. My parts are cheap compared to this thing. The reason it's a lemon, and my car isn't is because he is paying more in repairs than my car is worth. As you saw 3500 in repairs. He paid 6000 for it. That is in fact a lemon. He's paying more than half of what he paid for, and he paid more money then he should have.

I like to think I know about cars, but I know that I could still just as easily buy something with a few problems because what I 100% DO KNOW is that I 100% DON'T KNOW everything! Anyone who thinks they do is either A) a professional mechanic, or B) a professional bellend. Great vid - enjoyed it :-)

Bullshit title. That's not a lemon at all. You bought an old, driven, used car. It's not a brand-new showroom car. You could drive that car for a long time with the problems it has; it's not going to blow up because the diff has a tiny leak. IT'S OLD. That's also expected stuff on an M3. That car is in great shape for it's age. Of course a car that old is not going to be perfect. The rust can be patched or left; you have to expect rust on most cars unless they're garage queens. The oil leak is typical. Leaks are expected on BMWs; they all do that. After being on the road that long, things are going to be not perfect on it. Some things are going to have some play, and there is going to be a leak here and there on a BMW. There may be a clunk or a squeak here or there. None of these things make a car a lemon; that makes a car a car. If that's an issue just don't buy used cars. What type of car people are you? Are you expecting the steering wheel to be as tight as it was on day one? Of course not! That's nothing really even wrong; that's just using the steering wheel and it gets play over time.

Wow.. Your buying over 18y old performance BMW and your demanding it to be close mint on some nitpicky areas like loose heat shields, boot seals, weak gas struts and little oil leaks around e/diff and after fixin all it (on official bmw mechanic?) whine about spending 3.5k£? Only things I would have been worried to fix asap are : Vanos exhaust side, those rust holes in bottom floor of car and replace all bushings (while doing last one, i recommend upgrade to powerflex etc since og bushings will perish in couple of years, if car is driven hard) I´ve had same model E36 for almost 5y now and had to do a lot more than mentioned on this video over the years and still have not managed to spend over 3,5k£ since im doing all repairs myself and using aftermarket parts. Yea ofc you can spend thousands upon thousands on trying to make it flawless, which it will still never be for long since its so old and high mileage. My way to own car like this is just to fix everything that is actually important to driving & safety. Then I enjoy daily- and occasional track driving my cheap RWD 321hp BMW and when the time comes some day I´ll just either sell it for cheap or scrap it and move to E46 M or other car that my taste and wallet size meet.
