The Iraqi military had a range of anti-aircraft artillery, including Soviet-designed ZSU-23-4 Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and various types of towed anti-aircraft guns like the ZU-23-2. These weapons were part of Iraq's air defense strategy against coalition air strikes. Despite their use, the coalition forces' advanced technology and tactics, including electronic warfare and precision-guided munitions, significantly mitigated the effectiveness of these anti-aircraft systems. FYI: The ZSU-23-4 Shilka is a Soviet-designed self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon featuring four 23mm autocannons mounted on a tracked chassis. Developed in the 1960s, the Shilka is renowned for its rapid rate of fire and mobility, making it effective against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and ground targets. Its integrated radar system allows for target acquisition and tracking, providing a significant advantage in air defense. Widely used by various countries, including Iraq during the 2003 Iraq War, the Shilka remains a notable example of Cold War-era military technology. Crazy thing is, I didn’t have depression, ptsd, or anxiety when I was in combat. Now that I’m home, I have it all. The closer I got to death, the more at calm and at peace I was.

Maybe it’s because everything matters more in combat. An untied shoelace could be the difference between life and death. I once read how in the Korengal Valley guys would chew each other out for being dehydrated because their piss stank, which might compromise an ambush. Back home there’s a lot less ways to screw up so hard that it puts people in danger. I imagine that having to rewire your brain for regular life is stressful.
