English Lyrics: Opened wide my window shows Sparrow-clouds sky-aflutter Freezing nose, the wind blows Scattered exhaust pipes rattle ’n sputter Oh, the sun is going down Red, with gold, it is foretold I look down upon a ghost town An old acquaintance I behold Abrupt! Of a sudden my heart feels heavy The sight of twilight birds on the wing Sends my gaze soaring heavenwards My soul is sore, and how beautiful it is Evening still-life, silent city Soul a-swelling, tears a-running And so all conspires to make me weary And I just cannot keep from sobbing

Nina Hagen is amazing! She has a six octave vocal range. She always brings shivers down my spine in a good way. She’s best live in person and her personality is outrageous! I love her!

I first saw her on tv on stage at Rock in Rio, she was a surprise for everyone and became the most photographed artist of the festival. She made a great success in Brazil and she came back on the same year for a Brazilian tour, it was a disaster due to the horrible production of the country, nevertheless I went to see her concert in my city and she opened the concert with this amazing song Naturträne, she came from an UFO parked on her head. Beautiful. Miss you, Nina Hagen, ich vermisse Dich, Nina!❤

I am happy you liked it ❤ She is a really one of a kind type of person. Very talented, and doesn't take herself seriously as you can see. If you want to see her giving a totally different vibe, you can check her performance of "Fever". If you want her doing something similar, "Future is Now" on Austrian TV.

A lot of European rockstars stayed at the Hotel/Bar I worked at in Amsterdam, Nina was one of them. She basically destroyed her room by writing on the walls with lipstick.

I once knew a woman at work who lived together with Nina in a flat for some time. When I asked her about how it was back then, she answered with her thick French accent she retained despite living in Germany for more than thirty years: ‘oh Nina is a very nice person, but she takes too much through her nose’. I worked for theatres and venues in Berlin and they all loved Nina, because, as they kept telling me, besides her craziness she is also extremely professional and very kind to everyone. Greetings from Berlin!

If you know the genre, you hear strong echoes of German 1920s Avantgarde expressionist music and theatre, an intellectual and aesthetic reaction to the complete chaos and devastation caused in the soul of artists that had been in the trenches of World War One.

Nina Hagen had a classical singer education in the GDR. If you like this, look for "Klaus Nomi".

I bought her first album about 45 years ago. This is one of several stand out tracks. All of her albums are worth investigating.

She's a classically trained opera singer. Bringing a VERY impressive vocal range to the Punk Rock genre.

She was a trained opera singer in GDR IIRC, and at the end of the 70s moved to FRG (east and west Germany) . Aside from her music, she caused a small scandal when she named her daughter Cosma Shiva. Be aware that in Germany first names then had to be approved by the state (to ensure you don't name your kid s #1, #2, Condomfail or any other odd name)

I like her "new york new york" quite a bit. Have you considered a reaction to Ren? (say "Hi Ren", "Dominoes", "Chalk outlines" "Jenny & Screetch trilogy" "Back on 74" etc etc)

Hey Joyce, I just saw your great reaction. Thanks for that 👍❤. If you wanna see a awesome "newer" song of her, try Apocalyptica - Seemann feat. Nina Hagen (Official Video). Apocalyptica is the rock cello trio. It's a cover of a Rammstein song.

Nina is totally crazy ! Even now when she's nearly 70. She did/does genius thing, but also a lot of trash. That's her nature ! When she left the GDR and goes west, the chains were off and the free artist Nina Hagen was freed. I don't like all of her music, but I repect her art. Crazy little thing 💓

Words like Godmother or Godfather etc are a bit of a headlines text thing, but in every better case they point to someone being the innovator. For Nina, she seems seriously not only the main innovator of german punk, but of Punk in general. Some people may not want to think that, but we are often slightly misled by the grade of global fame a person has - into thinking those with more global fame have a higher ranking in all other aspects, too. Nina Hagen was never commercial enough to have covering global fame and she sang a mix of german, french, and english continuously which again kept her away from global mainstream - like most artists who sing their native language instead of the dominating industry language english. And yet, those artists coming out of nationally english-speaking countries are starting where the by far biggest entertainment industry lives in the same country. But why the suggestion Godmother of punk instead Godmother of german punk? Because punk is what the word formerly meant: person in puberty, nearly adult but not quite, and still embracingand enoying the uncontrollable intuitions of the inner child - looking at the adult world. That is the essence of what makes punk in music genuine punk. Many fantastic artists contributed to this in many great ways, performance, lyrics, politics, aesthetics, and we're fans. But Nina was and still is at age 70 (as of 2025) punk by DNA, personality, and soul, with or without music. She is start-to-present-time a person who has sparkling fun to look at the adult world, point fingers at it, and giggle about it, make comments that nobody scripted, which can sweep you off the chair. She seems to find it hard to behave, and be other than that. She does not need to act anything. But she, this adult kid, is also scarily smart in the adult half of her head, and too often it's clear she doesn't only joke around, but has a quite defined idea of what is constructive and what is destructive in our world. There are uncounted records of her confronted by one or another challenging instance, and she can't be tricked by any of those and stands her ground - to this day. That makes her more punk than most her colleagues of her time, which now spans 5 decades from the mid 70s to the mid 2020s. That is why we suggest Godmother Of Punk.
