Thanks for discovering Hinckley, which i live in, and sponsored :) there are still a few Hosier factories around the town, used to be such a pretty town until a redevelopment in the 1970 saw an end to alot of old beautiful buildings, Also the home of Triumph, and the Hansom Cab :)

Only discovered ATS yesterday - Love it. I'm from the Hinckley area and didn't know about the connection to Luddism. Castle Street does indeed run past the site of a former motte and bailey castle, part of the moat (now duck pond) is visible. There is also a museum that covers a lot of hosiery manufacturing, and Hinckley is where the Hansom cab was developed. Hinckley is a short distance to Market Bosworth, and the famed site of the Battle of Bosworth where Richard III met his end. There is also a nice preserved railway running from Shackerstone.

In the Netherlands, the central station of Dordrecht has A and B platforms that are actively used. Its because it is not only an important through station for intercities and international trains to Belgium and France, but also the terminus for local trains for both the southern and the central bit of the country. (these local trains will arrive and depart at the same time, so people can hop over to the next local bit) This often leads to comical situations where a train will ride into the station next to platform 1a, after which people will get off from their seats and start walking with the train. But then the train switches towards platform 2b in the middle of the station, suddenly riding away from all those people who had just gotten up. I have often done this in my sleepy early morning commute.

Okay, I know it isn't fair to compare Spondon or Derbyshire to Finland, but: Next passenger station from Tampere (largest inland town in Nordics) northbound on main line is Parkano. The station is about 4 miles northeast from the town itself, in the middle of woods, AND was not originally intended to serve passengers at all (in the 1970s), cutting the town off rail network. Before that, there was a station on a crossing line (between Pori on the west coast of Finland, and Haapamäki, a big railway crossing and town by mercy of Finnish National Railways) near the town centre.
