Great project! Glad to see I'm not the only one who will make a tool I want to use work by making a different base or whatever, rather than get out a different one. 😂

Contrasting wood looks fantastic. But, I almost shed a tear when you cut that big beautiful slab of walnut for a small piece.

I received a gift from my children very similar to this and D A D was painted onto the 3 boxes. Can also do M O M. I use on my bedside dresser for keys, watch, money and thumb drives. Great looking project. I think inlay or epoxy for letters would look fantastic.

A while back I made a box with bolivian rosewood and a padauk lid. Then I made an identical box out paudauk with a bolivian rosewood lid. I gave them to a couple of cousins that were brother/sister.

Absolutely beautiful result. I am very jealous of the availability you have in the USA of such nice wood types. The materials you used would cost a fortune in the UK.

I'm with JB. The contrast between the Holly and the Walnut is a genius choice, ad I love the design of this box trio thing.-a-muh-bob! I was pleased with the directions and build guidance that you gave us on this one. The resawing process is a little intimidating for me, but I think that I might attempt a variation of this project. Thanks for sharing this video with us. You did a great job on this one. I'm sure that your Mom and Wife are proud!

There were some things on the fly. I had no plan to make that router template or the router base for this video. I realized I needed them and decided to show that process. I'll try to do that more often.

I dig how contrasting it is. I thought about using wenge and holly. Maybe in the future.

Looks great, Billy. No walnut or holly in my part of the world, but I can mill up some jarrah and blackbutt. (When I've fixed my broken shop. I'm working on it!).

That Holly is an excellent accent wood. I had no idea it was so clean and bright. I’ve never seen anyone use it. Nice alternative from the typical Maple. I wonder when you might come across some Hickory in your shop to showcase 😁🤔 see what that wood is all about ! Just a thought, no pressure! Enjoy your channel 👍
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
I would love to use hickory for something. I'll have to think about the right project.

Totally thought it was some kind of plastic in the thumbnail due to how bright white it is. Very cool stuff indeed.

3:20 what's the name of that machinery that's grinding off the edges of the base of the box?
@HyperactiveNeuron2 жыл бұрын
I love the holy and walnut... Such a great combo. I'm curious how these would look if one of the walnut pieces of the top had the same outer dimensions as the box so the holly slab and the other walnut piece were inset to the base of the box. The exact same thing but the top piece of walnut laminated was equal to the outer dimensions of the box. I think the contrast and the out Official gap would create a different contrast

Give it a shot! Try it and post it on social media (if you have it). It would be interesting to see.

Beautiful build Billy can I ask see the lids did u cut them to the same size as the box to then rest on top 🏴👍
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
I made the boxes and then cut each lid so they fit inside them. They're all from one board so the grain flows from box to box.
@michaelwillson68472 жыл бұрын
@@NewtonMakes that's great Thanks for that gonna attempt one them got nice bit of elm that'll work nice with chestnut lay instead the Holly 🏴

I ended up with a bench dog router plane based on a Rob Cosman review. I don’t need it. But if I can, I’ll cut a fricken dado in the back of a piece no one will ever see just to use the router plane. Someone asked why I did it? To cut down on weight. Real reason. I like my router plane.

They are great at what they do!

I can't find holly anywhere in So Cal, do you have a local distributor that ships? Cosman uses it a lot and it is a gorgeous accent wood, so white.
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
I wish I had a local place. I haven't spent time researching it. I simply did some Google searches and bought online. Don't remember where off hand.

So far this piece is called, "three modern boxes filled with Lego sitting on tray." rolls off the tongue.
@davecurda23502 жыл бұрын
Nice boxes but why do you use top oil that is for food prep and not polyx oil ?
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
I used it because I'm not sure what I will ultimately use them for. I've used polyx and top oil and haven't found a noticeable difference. I believe others have said the same thing.

What was the thickness of the box sides?
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
About 3/8"
@TadTheTinker2 жыл бұрын
This would be called an accent piece. Sometimes used as a centerpiece on a dining table. Or centered on a hall table to catch keys and change. Looks great. Got a thought or maybe a question. If you had put a fretsaw blade in your band saw, couldn't you have cut your original piece into thirds for thickness to get all of the tops you needed? Wouldn't have lost the 1/8 inch to one cut. Just curious.
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
There are multiple ways to tackle things. For instance, I could have put a circular saw blade in my table saw, which would have been thinner.
@aliasneo6492 жыл бұрын
Hey Billy, I love this build. Out of curiosity how tall did you make each box? Also I can't seen to find much holy...keep the awesome builds going. Subbed for awhile now and a supporter of the channel
@NewtonMakes2 жыл бұрын
I think they're about 2.75 - 3" tall. I don't remember exactly. Holly is tough because it's not common and doesn't grow big. I had to order mine online. It's a tad pricey but necessary for some of my projects.
@mikeburkholder74582 жыл бұрын
What about seeing how ash, white oak or another light colored wood works with walnut? Don't be afraid to substitute. Love the grain and the project

It's rare that I'll go all hand tools on anything. Nothing against the method, but I only have a couple days to make something to get the video out.
