My mom is white and we grew up “in the hood.” My mom is my everything. Especially as a woman in a mixed relationship being talked about by many that did not want to see a mixed couple. She had to be stronger, and not be a fool to those that wanted to bring her down. Now this was in the 70’s and 80’s and seeing a white woman with a black man brought pain from both sides. Thank God for her friends, and church. Much love to those that loved my family unconditionally!! Love comes in all colors and oh, what beauty God has made!! Bless you all!

Her mother's strength of character is what shaped Alicia. Her mother is also an artist. Alicia's story is about her mother! Her mother knew she could do it and she worked her ass off to provide for her. And she was an only child as well. Who knows how her future could have turned out had she been one of multiple children. Her mother focused entirely on her and her creative outlet. This story is really about her mother and how much a woman can achieve when she believes she can! She set the tone for Alicia's whole life and future. And that's something so amazing I can't even fathom it! I've been a social worker, I've worked in the addiction field. Children who are unwanted by their parents suffer more than the average person can understand. And the system is so flawed that children and teens who grow up in foster care and state homes, suffer mercilessly! Less than 50% of children and teens who are raised in foster homes become productive citizens in adulthood because of the trauma they faced as a child. Not all children have a protector. My mother was going to abort me and all of my sisters when she found out she was pregnant and I wish she had! She scarred us all so badly we are all still floundering as adults. Still hurting from our childhood trauma and the things she did and allowed others to do to us. No human being deserves to grow up knowing their mother and or father is incapable of loving them. That's no kind of existence! And it sure isn't living if you ask me.

I have worked on my mindset tremendously, which is how I was able to finally break free, but I think because of the many positive changes I made, I just falsely believed my healing was done… when I first got away, I went through a period of strength and resilience that made me and my kids so proud and when I’m hit with low points- I suddenly am reminded I still have so far to go and it’s almost shocking for me to realize that as far as I’ve come- my journey will never be complete. Sometimes when a parent doesn’t show up for us, like your Dad, it’s a blessing in disguise. Your life may have taken an entirely different path and we would have never been blessed to know Alicia Keys. Thankful to hear your story, such a wonderful role model for young women.

This a beautiful documentary my eyes were full of happy tears the whole time. I have been Alicia Keys fan since Day #1 and she has blossomed into a beautiful woman and person. Her music bought me through some of the tuffest times in my life .I mean it feels like we went through the trenches together and and I'm thankful for her life and legacy.

Alicia is such a powerful and inspirational woman. We can see she stems from her brave and strong mother. It is beautiful to see women rising despite having gone through tough childhood experiences

Oh how I wish my Dad was here for this amazing women and her continued journey in her greatness! He followed her from day one. I can recount the day he called me and said, "Baby girl you must check out this emerging artist named Alicia Keys. She has something special...she is walking in a legend!" He spoke truth, as usual. Alicia became a staple in our Saturday music rotation. Grace & Peace beautiful spirit!
What amazing woman? She just makes music and Market it and gullible people suck up this garbage

I love Alicia Keys music, always have. But I just realized that Im in Love with Alicia, the person. Not literally in love, but who she is, is so amazing. That positive uplifting energy every time I see her is irreplaceable. Her husband and children are some of the luckiest people in the world to experience her on a daily. I know she aint perfect, but she isnt too far behind it.

This is a real and beautiful video you’re sharing with us. Your mother is about my age and I can see the love she has for you in her eyes. I have a wonderful daughter, too, and she’s given me two beautiful grandsons like you did for your mom. I’m so glad your mom chose the option of having you. Your honesty and what you share is so helpful to so many. I was given both options as well and have always felt my daughter was the best thing that ever happened to me. Sometimes having the father there isn’t really the best option. A father isn’t always a dad even under the same roof. Children that have a good dad are very fortunate. But, one great parent can do wonders. I see your mom passed down her beauty, honesty, sass and style to you! I love it! Thanks for sharing this heartwarming video!
