I don't think anyone asked or cares but I just wanted to say that: I got a new board game for christmas and used Atrioc's advice of giving a cool and hype game pitch before just jumping straight into 10 minutes of rule and game explaination and everyone was a lot more invested and hyped about playing the game, and even though 10 minutes of rule explaining followed, noone was bored or waiting to play the game only half listening, it was very good advice.

BOTW is so good that when I'd talk to friends playing it, we could easily learn something one of us didn't know. Whole quests, Link's House, the Hylian Shield Location, Tarrey Town (I love tarrey town so much), the fourth fairy fountain, etc. The early BOTW days, when things weren't in a wiki, felt like N64 days of sharing game info with classmates. They didn't just design a Masterpiece open world, they recaptured a little bit of childhood magic we had as kids.

I think Atrioc should try Payday, in many ways they pull off a lot of what he loves about Hitman really well. The difference between doing a heist loud or quiet is incredibly different, and the moment you fuck up your stealth and the entire police department descends on you is amazingly fun/stressful.

I'm so glad you mentioned oblivion. I spent so many childhood hours roaming oblivion, but looking back on it now... I never completed the main story once lol. I spent the entire time exploring doing side quests, pickpocketing random people, and having fun.

Oblivion is tied for my favorite game of all time with fallout new Vegas, and it actually kills me sometimes how many people talk about skyrim and don't talk about oblivion. Shivering Isles was the first DLC/add on I ever bought and it really spoiled DLC for me for a long time because of how good it was. Everything about that game was good, idk if it's nostalgia talking or what but to me it really was a masterpiece of a game. Unfortunately I didn't really get to play morrowind for very long but I remember it being really good too.

Atrioc with the good takes as always. Also key point made here being "it's easier to attract flies with honey and vinegar". Positive reinforcement to negative ratio should be optimally around 9:1 when trying to get people to act a certain way.

I just realized that the “training to fight the boss” factor in breath of the wild is really similar to minecraft

It's really not. In Minecraft, you should be able to beat the boss as soon as you are able to get to it. In BOTW, the boss is there at the beginning of the game, and in order to actually beat it, you (if you're not a god gamer) need to go out around the map and earn strong items and other bonuses against the boss (heart/stamina containers, the help of the divine beasts) until you are ready to face it.

@@altrivotzck6565 I certainly understand what you're saying. However I feel that the minecraft boss is in a similar light. The bigger difference is that the game doesn't tell you that you have to beat the boss in minecraft. It's more like an easter egg that you discover whilst travelling the world and crafting items. If you were to play it without looking up, until you see in your recipe book "eye of ender" and throw it, seeing it fly through the air as you travel to see where it may be leading you, you have no idea that this boss exists. It's more about discovery, but still has that difficulty that is mitigated by preparation like in BOTW, as many players still have difficulty with the boss, even whilst having good gear. However in BOTW, you don't stumble across the boss. You know from the start that your goal is to become strong enough, not just to beat the boss, but to get to it in the first place. Your preparation is much more deliberate.

@@planetdestroyer1111 I don't know about you, but for me, even without good gear, the enderdragon isn't that hard to beat. There's a reason minecraft speedrunning is quite fast. Even if you didn't have the skills of a speedrunner, by the time you were able to make your way into the end, you'd probably be able to beat it if you knew how it worked. I'm pretty sure this isn't the same in BOTW. I don't think you can just go to the castle and easily defeat gannon (I know people have beat him with just a broom, but I'm pretty sure it takes much more skill than it does against the enderdragon) Maybe this is just because I'm more familiar with the enderdragon fight than the gannon fight. I'm pretty sure the gannon fight is simply quite a lot harder by the time you're able to get to it, though.

I don't think Atrioc knows why exactly he likes the games that he plays, which isn't where the developers let you reign free, but a game where the developers create many many different diverging paths for you to follow to reach the end in which the illusion of agency is created.

this got me excited for more Big A playthroughs! Would love to watch Subnautica on stream, special place in my heart for open world survival. I watched all of Hasan's streams on it. Ark (single player) is also a good one for running off in random directions and encountering things you can't handle yet, would love to see a first impressions of it- running off into the water, getting scared shitless, powering up a bit to find even scarier stuff- could be incredible to watch! (though maybe with some quality of life mods if you want to get going faster)

I like grinding, I like going through the grimy repetitive hours of making my character a badass or stacking my inventory with good items. It’s satisfying when I finally go to progress and I’m so freaking set up that it’s easy. It’s still a challenge but the reward is much different for me. Playing a game quick and taking risks like XCOM devs want is cool, you try hard and there’s some nervousness about whether you’ll be able to beat it. Playing games and grinding and optimizing creates a low point of “man this is taking a minute” and then creates a huge high point of finally having the set up you want and breezing through.

I played through BOTW without ever using the best weapons I had in my inventory. Would constantly just be using 2nd/3rd best or worse, which meant I never used the best weapons in the game

Gmtk is goated. I agree with you about BOTWs weapon degarding mechanic. Another thing it implicitly does (though idk how often they did this) is allow for really strong weapons, but have them be very fragile, so it's a glass cannon type thing. I have gotten in multiple arguments with people about the system, and at the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference, but I do think it's a much more engaging design. It allows for you to experience far more weapons than you otherwise would, regardless of strength, and makes it so things like farming Lionels aren't just a one time thing that you brute force, get the best gear and win. It isnt always the funnest to grind, but getting good at the mechanics to make said grind a breeze does feel good. The only real defense Ive heard from people that dont like it is they dont like grinding, bc "I have a job, I cant spend time grinding in a game." Which I think is fair, but also, it's a fucking adventure game. The whole point is to spend a fuckload of time in the game, exploring the world. If you don't have time to get the weapons, it seems like you don't have time for the game period, but that's just me ig.

I never used the best weapons in botw. I exclusively used the worst weapon in my inventory at the time because if I could do it with the weak weapon why would I waste the good one

I don't no how Xcom does it, but the concept of urgency should be easily implemented. Make so reinforcements will come or a bomb will blow up or they have to protect someone. You can also still have some missions without a timer to change things up.

the leveled enemies were way worse in oblivion than in skyrim, as soon as you hit a certain level threshold suddenly every random bandit/highwayman would have the highest tier armor in the game asking you for like 5 bucks in change for safe passage.

In botw I just optimized the fuck out of the weapons. Reloading until I got the highest attack stat and then used amiibos to get biggorron sword with durability up and durability transferred to them all. Then I duplicated. Luckily I find it fun and I have a wide variety of weapons, but I min maxed it

not a 100% sure but if im right that deus game s the one where i skipped the entire first or 2nd level by stacaking gabrage and random debree onntop another and jumpiong ove rthe locked fence blocking the locked exit. I think the turn based timer to prompt players to play riskier was a bad move since the point of XCOM 2's story was built on the fact that a majority of players lost the first game. Like, we all sucked playing the way we were playing so adding a turn time limit was only more difficult for us players who already sucked at the first one.

I like destructible weapons in BotW but when you play on Master Mode because of the regen and large health bars I'd never fight big enemies and especially lynels because they'd destroy more than half of my weapons.

Already in the begining of vid players will optimize fun out of the game, and take the more optimal route yes that is true and that is part of a experience players need to learn from thos mistakes/risk takes which adds a element of difficulty which turns into the point of optimization, aka instead of doing the fun way the player wants to go quicker to do another section quicker becoming skilled is another form of having fun, but at the same time can become a burden and no longer fun.
