I soon found out why this Landrover Discovery 3 was Part Exchanged!

I bought this Landrover Discovery 3 2.7 HSE cheap after it was part exchanged at the main dealers. What was the real reason the owner got rid?

I had a 2004 Disco 3 and absolutely loved it. Did 1000’s of miles in it including numerous trips from Oxford to Cornwall and it never missed a beat. Brilliant car and I still regret selling it

@@ChopsGarage You should check out LR Time - a German KZbin channel in English who have a D3 & D4 and show people how to maintain and look after these. Lots of their friends have them as well. They do it all with a bit of humour especially re Toyota drivers being bored with nothing to do but drink coffee all the time while Land Rover drivers get to work on their cars all the time and know their vehicles inside out.

It´s the entire repair history you are reading from. The dates are on the left. Not all done recently. You are talking af about things done in 2015 as if they have just been done. The 7k was spend from 2012 til now from what i can see. Otherwise they changed brakes 3 times in one service 😂 But love your videos and following your business🙂

Check the dates on the repairs on that £7,000,. It covers the full history and life of the car, NOT just the last service/repair done to the car. The dates are listed on the left of the paperwork beside each section of repairs, i believe it shows the mileage at repair as well in the centre. I can see at around 2-3 MOT charges and a couple of brake replacements in that list, you wouldn't have all that done in the last year. Check again James. Yes, a lot of work carried out, but not all in the last year or so for £7,000

I think the majority of scare stories about Land Rover products are from people who haven't actually owned them. Ex's dad had a Disco 3, did 180k in three years with no issues at all. Sold it to a farmer who uses it as a farm hack and replaced it with a Disco 4 and that had 212k on it as of a few years ago. Aside from an EGR valve that was replaced under warranty he's had no issues with that either. I see it around even now and it still looks the part. As long as they're looked after, serviced regularly with genuine Land Rover parts they won't let you down. Too many people skimp on servicing, cause their own problems then offload them to the next owner who inherits all the issues.

16:15 Anything with an electric handbrake, I walk away from. More trouble than they are worth. What is wrong with an old school pull on hamdbrake. A complex fix for something that wasn't broken.

Looks like the next best thing to a brand new Discovery even before you have worked on its presentation. Warrantywise will give the next owner peace of mind, although it seems like all the major issues that have or could arise have been dealt with.

I’ve had my 08 for 6 years with very few issues. I’ve just changed the auto gear box oil, new discs & pads all round. Driven to Czech Republic twice, south coast to Scotland 5 times & is my daily drive 80 miles every day. Mileage is now 167k. Had new hand brake switch 2 years ago. On 3rd set of front pads & 3rd set of tyres. Best car I have ever owned in 37 years of motoring.

Very good cars, possibly the most versatile vehicle going. Supremely capable off road, utter comfort on road, huge load capacity, max towing capacity, built like a tank and still look good. You absolutely do need deep pockets to run one though. Aside from the big stuff , brakes, suspension bishes and tyres don't last long due to their weight. Tbh I think they're prob the best car LR ever made

I had 2 Discos, a 3 on an 05 with 200k up it but serviced every 6 months & similarly cared for. Only bought it for a big weekend & kept it 6 months with no issues. Got a 64 plate one after that because they are such a nice place to be & kept that 3 years with just one fault - the lekky handbrake. Great cars but helps if you own a garage!

The bigest issue on the 2.7 disco 3 is the oil pump, the original ones have a weakness in the casing and when it brakes it takes out the cambelt as the idler pully is mounted to it. There is an uprated one available as a replacement.

Had 3 of these, current car has 182k on it. Very reliable, go anywhere, do anything. Terrible on fuel around town (23mpg) but mid 30s on a run. Not a fan of the manual box most are auto. HSE 3 window sunroofs are nice but they can leak water down the A B and C Pillars drowning the electronic modules, pull seatbelts all the way out and check they are dry. Fantastic car and you should keep it, get a trailer and save cash transporting vehicles. Turbo replacements are usually body off to gain access which is why the big bill. You will never find a better one. I'd be very interested if you do decide to sell though I do fancy a Disco 4 as the 3.0 engine has far more grunt.

08 Disco 3 was the best car I ever owned, regret always getting rid as do need a 4x4 and anything else bar a land cruiser is just not capable enough when considering the comfort factor - having also owned a petrol v8 P38 rangie my perception of "reliable" is biased but would also say that you always need to be prepared for something, but in-between those times as long as well looked after they are reliable as anything their age considering the tech that's in them (would also recommend getting a specialist computer for them like the IIDTool to be able to programme and fault find) - I'd be checking further with the cold weather as notorious for glow plugs to go bad and seize on the block, rendering them horrible to cold start - but all in the air ride is nicer than the S-Class I came out of, and they can be a lifesaver in bad weather through flood & snow - really are a great car to own

Iv'e had one for the last 6 years and I love it , I think you might find a new battery takes care of the special programs off notification on start up. I wont say its not had one or two minor problems in its time with me but no more than any other car would have done I beleive , its a 2004 model so getting on now and I intend hanging on to it !

Definately keep it - probably the best example of a stock D3 I have seen. I have the same 2008 model purhased about 4 years back with 236,000kms now on 275,000kms the main issue it had was the gearbox which is now rebuilt. Currently changing out the radiator but cant wait to get back in and drive it most comfortable car I have owned. Prefer it to my wifes 2015 Pajero.

That's the best example of a Disco 3 of that age I've seen, one thing about your drive around you said something about a Mike problem but I'm sure I could hear the air suspension pump running for most of the trip. If me ears didn't deceive me then I would get it checked out. I tuned into that noise straight away vixen my 2006 Overfinch 4.2 Supercharged has the same annoying tendency to run for quite long periods even though there are no leaks lol

They traded it after the £7k hit because the most common phrase I heard from the garage (I had 2 x RRS and 1 x Disco) was ‘it’s a common fault this…’ so despite all those repairs there are still lots of things that can and likely will go. Breaks your heart cause they are fantastic cars to drive but horrendous to push!

Loved my Disco, had a couple. The main issue I had was sunroof leaking due to blocked drainage pipe, and fault on air suspension. Engine never let me down... but needs that servicing.... oh its a killer on bushes, its not a light car.

Nice D3 just be careful of the oil pressure & oil pump on these motors. Known to snap cranks & weak oil pressure, can be resolved with an upgraded oil pump. 👍🏻

Between myself, family and friends we must have had 20 jlr products in the last 20 years. Everyone including myself loves them on lease but dislikes them in various degrees when bought outright. I mention the last 20 years because they don’t seem to learn from their mistakes. Bottom line, people who know that cars can break are much more tolerant when they do. And like mat farah said, you’re not buying a 10 grand car you’re buying a 70 grand car that’s been beaten down to 10 grand. The running costs don’t get cheaper.

A great find.Well done. When I bought my Freelander 2 i6 HSE ,6 years ago , it too had FSH and all of the problem areas replaced - including a new haldex unit and rear diff and it also had an engine replaced at 114,000 miles which alone was a staggering £12500. I just service it regularly and keep on top of anything that may cause failure down the line. In my ownership it's passed every MOT without a single advisory and the MOT tester always comments on how clean it is underneath. The problem is, as you said, people think they're unreliable because of having to shell out on massive bills, but as in my case and yours, after shelling out on the problem areas, the owners then sell them, after actually ensuring they're going to be pretty much reliable for the foreseeable future for the next owner. Makes no sense.

I also run a D3 (06) here in Devon - just a taxi for hospital runs. Only non-service item was handbrake gears stripped. Wondering if Freelander 2 is cheaper to run? The real workhorse is my Ford Focus Estate (06) with heavy duty suspension, to accommodate my chainsaws/fencing tools - cheap as chips to run! I'd love an olde HA van to do up maybe - cheaper than chips, a Farmer's favourite!

Hi James I’ve had 3 of them 1 2.7 and 2 off the 3.0 and in my experience the 2.7 I had to have a recon engine at 110,000 miles but had no issues with the 3 ltr but the electrical issues are much the same on either engine but you have had a lot work already done so should be good for another 3 or 4 years but you no it all comes down to how they get looked after and servicing hey and they do get too much stick than what they deserve that’s why we keep buying them 😂

My D3 is now 16 years old and just done eighty thousand. Love it but do worry about the regular failure points that must all be waiting to go at once. The one in the video seems to jump miles between service 2014 looks to be 46,000 and next service is 2021 76,000 Then either covid or a change of ownership as the mot goes 300 miles 40 miles 10,000 miles between tests. I know I got mine at 4 years old 29,00 and that did the same odd bursts in that 4 years.

owned an 06 reg, lovely car, can do most of the silly faults like door locks yourself, egr,s can coke up, Handbrake is a biggy, can get a kit to refurbish about £230 if you can do it yourself, what killed mine was the appalling wiring loom, the wires rot inside, go green inside, big loom down the nearside of the vehicle multi connectors exposed to the elements, had multiple failures, had to take it to a auto electrician, cost £2000 to put right. That did it for me, got rid of it, but when they are working they are superb, if you run this one for a couple of months you will not want to sell.also with winter nearly upon us you can program the auxiliary heater to preheat the car for up to 30 mins before your journey. I drive a 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 3.0L TD (D4D), 6sp manual. Have owned it since new and have driven 137,000 km, including three spells of 12 months each in storage whilst working overseas. Weekdays it does a routine 50 km and the rest of the mileage annually is made up by recreational hunting trips with a significant amount of the mileage off-road on rough farm tracks. It tows a small trailer with Honda quad, a full load of camping gear and 2-4 adults depending who’s coming on the trip. So almost identical mileage to this Land Rover Discovery. Since the end of the factory warranty I have done all servicing myself, every 6 months religiously. In all the years I have owned this vehicle, the ONLY non-service related item I have replaced was the bonnet catch alarm sensor. Cost me $32 delivered. Thirty dollars in 13 years. $2.46 per annum. I think you have to be ill in the head to want to own one of these Land Rovers. It must take a very special kind of masochism.

I had a 2005 HSE for the cheap tax bracket. Sunroof drains blocked and had a swimming pool in passenger footwell every time it rained. Drivers heated seat failed. Had shudder under load, torque converter problems. Never got above 25mpg. Traded it in for something newer. Regret it every day, only car I’ve ever owned that gave me such pleasure to drive.

I have a 2004/05 2.7 TDV6 SE and it is easily the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever owned. 13k miles covered in 18 months. Had to do EGR valve, suspension sensors and handbrake BUT you can get the refurb parts and do them cheaply. The owners groups are fantastic. I have never had such a versatile vehicle. 7 people in, no problem, 3 axle trailer, no problem, snow on the ground, no problem. I’d say keep it if you can, I won’t be parting with mine for some time. The only time it hurts you is at the fuel pump.

Drove brilliant but within a year things started to go wrong. When cars get to 15 years or older the plastcs and rubbers degrade massively and it becomes chasing one job after another.

Another train of thought is that something else costly has gone and they were fed up throwing dosh at it, I'd run it for a while and check for pending codes, my monies on dpf after last year's regen mate. Give it some full throttle action, also customers might think the other way that it's cost a lot and it might cost them a lot, hard to win sometimes.

I would sell it and put it up for proper money. As you know, some cars are risky over the 6 months or so post sale. On cars where you can put that good margin in, this will help cover towards any bits that go wrong. You would be kicking yourself if it came back for a £££ repair which you would have been ok on if you put it up for proper money. As you say, they're in demand in your area, it's good condition, speccy, low mileage, should be the one other dealers price theirs by.

I had one of these and I have to say it was the best car I have ever owned. It was supremely comfortable and very practical. People rubbish them and moan about the cost of maintenance but these are very complex vehicles that do go wrong particularly as they age. Most of the issues occur because people try and run them on a shoe string budget and cut corners on maintenance. If you go for one of these you need to make sure you have a few £k tucked away for dealing with issues when they occur just like your previous owner. If you do that you can enjoy what is a great vehicle.

Rare model being an HSE and manual, check your A pillar covers for the material coming off. Will be a sign that the sunroof is leaking, they’re notorious for it. I had a manual GS spec, so no roofs. Was pleasantly surprised by the economy, used to get high 20’s around town and 35-38mpg on a run.

My dad had a 15 plate HSE. Water ingress destroyed the Stop start ECU and some harnesses. LR said they never have a problem with the SS ECU so had to order it custom. £11k and 3 months off the road. He traded fo a RR sport hybrid, some never learn.

I'm on my 2nd Disco 3, and I wouldn't touch the 2.7 Diesel if you gave me one due to their oil pump issues and the D4 snapping cranks randomly. The only "reliable" Disco 3 is the mighty 4.4 AJV8 petrol, my current one is on 160k miles and still going strong. Yes it still might suffer from suspension or brake issues but I know the engine won't die and leave the truck worthless. And just in case ...... I have a backup vehicle which is a Disco 2 TD5, which is super reliable and has just done 2500 miles to Sardinia and back. GLWS, that one does look clean.

Land Rovers are funny things. Some go for a million miles with nary of a problem and others are such a pain in the arse they're got shot of the moment the warranty expires. This one looks as if it's been someone's school-run car. Probably what you want it you're going to go for one - but these are never cheap cars to own. They're really, really comfortable. But you can end up paying for it.

Special programs off is not a good message mate just fyi. I’ve had 2 of these and my dad has had one aswell, they shouldn’t be coming up with that as you start. Hopefully just a new battery maybe??? The first one I bought on a gamble and a new battery fixed it all (they’re so temperamental about voltage). Sure you’ll fix it!! Enjoy I love them and wouldn’t be without one, works well with the dogs and horses

I have a discovery 3 with intermittent issue with acceleration it randomly los3s power for less than 1 second but only happens very rarely and carnt get it diagnosed as its so intermittent do you have any tips? Its had new engine (full rebuild inc turbo) and had map and maf sensor replaced and di it prior to engine rebuild

Well maintained Discovery and wouldnt part with it after whats been spent on it, just continue the journey, i have a discovery and just had new landrover genuine clutch and suspension pump and air tank along
