My Red Female Doberman is in heat its making my adolescent Cane Corso Male go wild! We had to bite the bullet and just go through with the surgery because we didn’t want to risk her being in heat again and make Lincoln, along with the neighborhood dogs, go crazy again. I had to separate Lincoln from Nixie because he started hurting her and banging her across the house trying to get to her. He was so sad to be alone for the first time since being with us. It was Thursday November 18, when we did the first drop off attempt but since we went to a low cost clinic they had limited spots available for that day. So we head out again the next day, Friday November 19 and with success we were able to get a spot. Her surgery was a success with no complications. The surgeon had to put in an endotracheal tube down her throat so they said she might have a cough. She had her first meal and drink in over a day, as per doctor’s orders. And she mostly rested all night and the following day, Saturday November 20. I contacted Lincoln’s breeder wondering if his brother or dad were also crazy around the females in heat and got confirmation his dad gets wild too. He has calmed down with each passing day getting more training, attention and love. The E collar still comes in handy but definitely not when Nixie was around him in heat. Nixie is currently doing much better getting back to her usual self. She has managed to remove 2 of her stitches though but it does not look infected or opened. The total cost for the surgery was $223 for her size 62 lbs, pain medication and also because she was in heat, it cost a bit more. Lincoln and Nixie will need to be separated for the next 40 days so she can fully recover internally as well. For the next 14 days after surgery she is not allowed to swim, take a bath or wet the incision part, free run or jump, climb stairs or any kind of strenuous activity. The after care is pretty straight-forward and manageable. I wonder if she will have any personality changes after spaying.

She was 4.5 years old. We didn't have a reason to spay her until we got our male Lincoln. Things are much better now!
