LoR is mechanically, in my opinion, the best card game that exists. Skill decides the vast majority of games, not who drew better or who went first. Their mana system is unmatched and the balance within the game is fantastic. Sure, metas always exist, but you can climb to Masters with just about anything if you are good enough. Kudos to the devs on this one.
@xavierburval4128 Жыл бұрын

One of this game's biggest successes in my opinion is just how much it has done for League of Legends' lore - expanding it really well and making more people interested. We get introduced to a lot of different characters and creatures and we get to know more about the relationships between them and champions we already know with the voicelines in the game. I've been quite interested in the lore since waay back but especially after they ditched summoners and they started paying more attention to it. For a long time I've wanted something that would let me experience the world of League outside of just the game itself and this game and Arcane both made me happy for this reason and hopefully Arcane season 2 and the upcoming Riot MMO bring more attention to League lore because I think the world of Runeterra is really well crafted and deserves it.
@webbowser8834 Жыл бұрын
I would go as far as to say Legends of Runeterra single handily made me care about Riot as a company. Back when they were just the "League of Legends" company, I really didn't care about the world they were building. Why should I? Runeterra with its exceedingly high production quality and legitimately excellent storytelling made me invested, and now I keep a close watch on what Riot Forge is up to.

The reason LoR is not more popular is because Riot does very little to promote it. TFT is an example, very early on nobody would play it if it wasn't in the League client, yet the league client doesn't make any mention of LoR. LoR is like the third child that the parents didn't want but had anyway, which sucks because to me it is the best card game out there.
@demonseed360 Жыл бұрын
Billion percent true. Sometimes I ask myself, what if it was the opposite? What if LoR was in the League client and TFT was standalone. I doubt that TFT would be as popular. Think of all the free marketing the game gets by just being a click away for the entire League playerbase. Sure, not everyone will like it, but there is literally no barrier of entry compared to LoR.

17:11 it's literally the exact same in Magic, you just didn't realize it because there's an "auto pass" turned on by default. In magic you literally pass priority to the other player after anything happens basically. Technically you would be hitting that button like 10x more in magic if you didn't have the auto pass thing enabled by default.
@fish_in_distress Жыл бұрын
This game has an auto pass as well, the big difference is you're able to go back and forth playing sorcery speed spells and creatures in each round, as opposed to only being able to interact with your opponent's turn at instant speed in MTG
@martinkeyaerts1509 Жыл бұрын
totally xD
@SmashCentralOfficial Жыл бұрын
@fish_in_distress Yes, the point is Rarran is acting like you have to hit the Pass button a lot in this game but not so much in a similar game like MTG. What he isn't realizing is that he would be hitting Pass WAAAAY more in MTG if the auto pass feature wasnt enabled by default and wasn't hidden in the background.
@SaberToothPortilla Жыл бұрын
@@SmashCentralOfficialRight, but the auto-pass in Magic also covers a lot more because you can basically only interact at instant speed during your opponents' turn, and you're less likely to have an instant (i.e. something you may be able to use) than in Runeterra, where, since you *may* be able to use something basically always, you have to pass much more often. Now, if you turn auto-pass off, they're both probably about the same, and, in fact, magic is probably worse because of the phase structure.
@tinyturtle1898 Жыл бұрын
@@SaberToothPortilla I haven't played Magic, but yea, every deck in Lor has cheap spells. From a competitive standpoint, you should keep auto-pass off especially if you run few spells, like combat tricks of Champ spells. I do think Auto-pass improves the experience for Casual play, or grinding ladder
@tinfoilslacks3750 Жыл бұрын
Long time card game player. Played tons of them, but Runeterra is definitely my favourite by a huge margin. I find what Rarran says around 16:40 about the button interesting. LoR is definitely the most intense and involved TCG in the sense that it has the least downtime and most shared considerations you have to make. And that's definitely its most polarizing element. The exact thing that some people don't like about it is exactly what its fans value most about it. It just feels inherently more competitive and involved than most other TCGs. Stuff like spell mana inherently requires you to consider future turns while playing for instance, which at the highest levels of play you should be doing in other TCGs as well. Stuff that's optional but optimal in other card games is more inherent and necessary to all levels of play in LoR. It's not the most complex card game, but it's probably the sweatiest for better or for worst.
@ottersaurus Жыл бұрын
You should look into Digica. The memory system is the best mana system Ive seen in any card game
@mateodejesus5426 Жыл бұрын
I come from magic and I definitely agree with your take. The biggest difference in this game is that there is no "may" ability: if you play a card it has it does what it says. It makes sequencing much more important. Win cons also change the game a lot. The damage/draw spells in LoR are actual dogshit in Magic, but the units are regularly more powerful than creatures are. This as well as LoR being an online game (constant balance changes and erattas) makes alternate win cons much rarer and less effective than straight combat. Making almost every deck win in the same way (not strategy, just combat) makes it feel much sweatier for sure.
@tinfoilslacks3750 Жыл бұрын
@@mateodejesus5426 There being no may abilities is almost entirely by design. Runeterra uses a very streamlined "open gamestate/closed gamestate" system where you can only manually make choices or selections during the open gamestate, and then everything resolves automatically once the gamestate closes. Spells and skills use the stack and targets or conditions can be selected, but triggers are instant and automatic. Unlike magic you weave abilities onto the stack as it resolves or make selections/pick targets with triggers as the stack resolves. It's kind of like you're building a giant rude Goldberg stack of effects and consequences where each one recontextualizes all the ones before it. It has far fewer big decisive effects or blow outs, but it also generally has more triggers with more knock on effects during a stack resolution total. The heart of the game is in the minutia. Sequencing 3 spells and all of your blockers exactly right to flip your champion mid combat to give it +1/1 to dodge removal is a semi-common game determining occurrence. There's also a small element of "playing against your own cards" because again, there's no may effects and everything is mandatory. Like the spells where you must spend all of your mana in order to play them, so if you want to spend less mana on them you need to sequence other cards in front of them. Or that declaring an attack with a unit will cause damage to the enemy units, including ones that gain bonuses when they're damaged, and you can't decline to have it hit them. Or that lots of cards will determine the unit they effect with a condition like strongest or weakest instead of targeting, and who they'll hit are subject to change mid stack resolution. That, and the shared round initiative pass system means there's an action economy and taking actions is a resource too, it isn't just mana and card advantage. Playing 4 slow spells (sorceries) in a turn gives your opponent a massive advantage because you've opened 4 stacks and given them 4 actions of their own to develop. Lots of ineividual cards can be threats, answers to threats, answers to other answers, or a combination of the three. Tempo is so massively important that trading down in terms of both mana and cards can situationally be a game winning play surprisingly often. It's also much more bluffing friendly, because of how being proactive versus being reactive with spells works. If I had to sum it up in a pithy little remark, it's for people who fucking love "fair" magic. It's MtG for MtG players who fucking love green stompy, boros weenies, gruul midrange, rakdos goodstuff, izzet combo that specifically doesn't have infinites, and Selesniya ramp. It's like if MtG limited was a constructed format. Creatures are good, removal is bad, but because it's constructed and not draft you get to actually indulge your build arounds and synergies. It's Magic if combat math is your favourite part of Magic.

I geniuenly love both Hearthstone and Legends of Runterra. Hearthstone because I like to make goofy decks, Runeterra for fully thematic ones. One of the reasons why I love Runeterra is that it encourages vastly different playstyles with it's myriad of champions. The different 'regions' are not limited to one playstyle and you can mix and match them as you please. For example: Bilgewater decks can focus on black powder & explosives with Gangplank at the helm, oblitirate your own deck to summon enormous sea monsters with Nautilus OR you can make a deck that's all about brawling & intimidation with a group of shark people who have the freaking Undertaker (Jack) as their leader. Though my personal favorite deck as of right now is overcoming the odds with Pantheon (THE gigachad of League) and his band of followers. Also Path of Champions is legit addicting and was my gateway to enjoying card-based roguelikes such as Monster Train and Erannorth Chronicles.

In any other card game crafting decks is such a big time/money commitment it becomes really hard to try new things or invest on a offmeta deck, I love HS and MTG but it always bums me out I can't build fun brews without spending hundreds of dollars, with how little F2P rewards they give, it forces you to spend all of it on meta decks

I came to lor years ago as a HS fan who couldn’t really get to loving the game due to the, at the time, prohibitive monetization you had to go through before getting viable fun decks. Add to it the advent of the patches meta and there was good reason to start looking at other TCGs. LoR is fantastic in the ease of crafting that it gives new players. The back and forth action model of the game was unintuitive at first coming from HS, but over time I’ve started to see it as perhaps LoR’s greatest feature. The interactibility that the game grants each and every player, (mostly) irrespective of the deck that they play is far more engaging than HS ever allowed itself to be. I very much recommend playing this game, even if you want a more laidback format of play for a casual game. Super stoked for more LoR content wherever possible. Cheers!

The thing about Legends of Runeterra is that they actually studied other card game, see what people disliked about those card game, then add those fixes into Legends of Runeterra at launch. Like for example, the dev knew your point would go to waste when the turn ends in Hearthstone, that's why they added the spell point. The dev knew you would feel helpless when it's your opponent turn, biggest example of that is Yugioh, something even Yuguoh fan disliked about Yugioh, so they made you both take turns just using 1 cards at a time instead which helps to be fair as possible since that makes it easier to defend but also more engaging which can either be bad or good thing depending on your taste, for me I like that it's more engaging, it might jabe something to di with thr fact that card games was my childhood before mobile was ever a thing, so I prefer to go at it non-stop rather than wait during my opponent turn though, plus I think better defense is nicer too, in Yugioh although rare, there was a back to back duel and that was the best duel I ever had, but in LoR I get to do that more often, just less epic but also less wait time. That does mean it's not as simple as Hearthstone but it's still more simple than most other popular card game though, it's like in a perfect middle ground in my opinion. They even said they aren't gonna cut the server of the game because they love this game themselves. They even made this the most F2P friendly live-service card game out there, literally. Now that's passion. And this is coming from someone who don't like MOBA, as in I'm not a fan of League. Sadly they seen to be pretty bad with advertising though, that's why it's not popular, not because it's more engaging with the button, I actually like that for the reason I stated above, if you don't like it then that's just your personal taste, not why it's not popular, it's not popular because of the advertisement. For example they didn't even put LoR button in LoL menu for couple years after launch, they only added that recently in fact, whereas something like LoL Tactics had that since launch instead, that should tell you everything. Lol 😂

I think your thoughts on "the button" (i.e. priority) is very interesting. I didn't consider before how passing priority could be annoying. Unfortunately though, I think card games that use priority will always have to function that way. If you didn't get priority, things would always resolve before you can respond to them. It would no longer be a pro-active game by design, and would defeat the purpose of "fast" spells altogether.

22:00 there is crafting in this game. Those green shards can be used to craft any card including champions. You get green shards from duplicates. Thanks for covering the greatest card game ever made that makes no money.

@Rarran also there is wildcard which allows you to trade it for the same rarity of said wildcard and the green shards which you get from dupes

LoR has a few anti-afk features 1) while the turn timer is long enough, if you time out once, your next timers is like 1/10 or 1/5 the length... it's nuts. this resets once you manually pass again 2) if the game sees you afk for 2 of your rounds {having the Attack Token twice}, it will auto-surrender you 3) if your opponent notices you are afk.. which is easy because of the timer. it's actually in their best interest, to do nothing on your turn/round, causing a mutual pass, and getting the attack token back

Having played LoR from the beginning, I've grown frustrated and stopped playing, but you reminded me that it's still a great game at the core

Fire Video I wish more people play Legends of Runeterra in the future. It's really nice what they do with the Lore in the game.

Runeterra is cool cause it’s the closest you can get to an irl card game with all the passing back priority and interaction without all the annoying stuff like manually keeping track of health

This was such a fun watch. As a shadowverse player and someone who's played LoL a bit too much, when they announced this game you know I was playing day 1. As a Shen one trick, theory crafting a deck around him was really fun. There was so much right about this game but the one thing I lost interest in was how when a new expansion came out, it never really changed my optimised Shen deck most times. Dont get me wrong, it was cool to see these LoL champions translated into a card game, but I never wanted to play them personally. I know its probably a me thing about just playing one champ though. But in Shadowverse and its rotation format, every new expansions means a new period to theory craft decks, and every class gains new tools that you have to learn and adapt to. That said i also hope you cover Shadowverse the same way here and I'm super down for your raw opinion of the game (the good and the bad). And yes I know LoR has a rotation format too but it was much later than its release.

Darkness is my favorite deck too! It is so much fun to just completely cobtrol and bully my opponent untill they surrender!

Whoaaaa rarran playing runeterra! I sincerely believe LoR is the best game out there, no hate for others (i played MTG for 20 years and hearthstone for 4! Others for very little). I love that people are giving LoR more attention, it really deserves it

LOR has the turn dynamics of MTG, the passive mana of HS and the rule 32 art of Yu-Gi-Oh.

Yes, please more content for LoR! Great game that has a lot of different play styles! Interested in seeing more dives into this game! There is the single player content, the tournament content, 2 player co-op mode, and the for fun lab content all to choose from on top of the "regular" 1v1 normals and ranked options.

As someone that started playing during the beta, i love seeing this game getting more popular. It sucks that It has a small team working rn compared to back in the day, but they seriously do an amazing job. Also more lor on your channels means more collabs with sunny right?

I'd love for you to make more Legends of Runeterra content. I just started playing it myself, and having youtuber I know jump onto it with me would be the absolute best!

You should try out the Path of Champions (PvE) gamemode. THAT is being slept on. It's a massive single player subgame to Legends of Runeterra, similar to the likes of Slay the Spire but with about 20 times more content and you can just play it for free. You can get different powers, put items on cards, get absolutely ridiculous combos and face absolutely ridiculous enemies. Barely anybody seems to notice it when it in my opinion is clearly the best game in its entire genre

I'd love to see more LoR content by you! Your videos with Snnuy are always great, and now that you're playing the game again, it'd be cool to see you do some challenges with Snnuy! He made a video where he had to win 3 games on 3 different monitors all at once, and it was nuts. I don't expect you to have to do the same, but I just wanted to use an example. Maybe you could make a video where you guys have to draft a deck, or spin a wheel to see what champs you make a deck around. Anything could be fun, and I'd definitely watch!

Also, yes. More Rarran playing LoR. Mogwai has abandoned the YaTubs and Grapplr left for TFT (which I love and watch happily), so I need another entertaining LoR channel to add to my rotation.

I love Runeterra, I think it’s more balanced than every other card game and the hardest(yes, even more than magic), but it’s still “casual” friendly and that’s amazing. The fact that you focus on champions for deckbuilding makes the game more impactful but still the deck has to work together. And yes, the art is amazing

i played LoR from Bilgewater to the Irelia nerfs, then i quit because the dev team was catering to a few streamers and they didnt even make the effort to try and hide it, whatever these few dudes wanted from the balance team they got it. I hoped that the game would get better sometime and seeing it so it makes me want to go back and play it

My favorite part about the tutorial, is that in typical riot fashion, the cards don't do what they actually do in the real game I'm also someone that has played League since season one, an MTG player, and someone that loves theory crafting decks. For example, with the new expansion, I saw both Wildfire and Deluge, and instantly tried to make a Wildfire deck. It's not great, simply because card draw is such a commodity in LoR, but when it works it works. And one of my biggest upsides is that the client is actually amazing and works great, even though I have a bug right now where 50% of my games have the game crashing (I pretty much only play PvE and PoC, so it's fine, just annoying)
