On the drinkable yogurts, my kids love them, but they’d re so experience! I have found that blending a tub of yogurt with almost half the container size of milk, and a Handful of fruit (like in the freezer say frozen blueberries, banana, strawberries, whatever) makes a nice substitute for such a cost savings!

I’ll make my weekly grocery list and then go through it again when I’m done and see what I can make myself. Examples like bread, condiments like bbq sauce, muffins, cookies, granola, tortillas, even sour cream (surprisingly easy) and then subtract them from my list. Saves a little extra money, food is cleaner and it tastes better.

I'm sticking to about 450 a month for my family of 3 for food and 75 a month for household supplies. I'm gearing up for the summer stock ups, especially on the meat deals as we get into grilling season and all the summer holidays. I often take an extra 20-50 bucks a month to stock up my freezers and pantry when there are big sales. From May to September, those deals tend to be on meats. My FoodSaver gets hauled out to seal small portions of steaks, pork chops, ground meat, fish, chicken breasts, lamb, etc. to use through the winter months. It keeps me from over-spending in the meat department all year. I do something similar when beef roasts, pork loins, pork shoulders, turkeys, and hams go on sale during the holidays. Right now, I have a few roasts left to use for slow cooker dishes over the summer and as I build my summer food stocks, but this practice has helped me keep our household budget for groceries and household goods at $450-500 per month without too much sacrifice in the meat department. This year, we are also doing a couple of small garden beds for tomatoes, zucchini and yellow squash, loose leaf lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, and radishes to help spread our dollars at the store since these produce items feature heavily in our diets. Since I will be helping out a family member by watching her daughter this summer, I thought a garden would be fun for she and my son (both 7 and best friends) to help grow food, not to mention the educational experience of learning more about food and gardening.

We are participating in a no meat buying challenge for 6 months in order to rotate our freezer. So far so good. For the breakfast, I cooked up a ton of bacon & sausage in the oven. The bacon was wrapped in parchment and put in ziplock, the sausage was vacuumed. They are in the freezer. A few seconds in the microwave and they are ready to go. I made breakfast for dinner this week. 30ish seconds for the bacon and a few minutes scrambling eggs, toast and done.

I often make muffins before we leave for camping breakfasts. Or we do granola bars. Both don't need heated up. If I have cooler options, then yogurt and granola is a good option. I've been told getting dry ice for your cooler keeps everything cold much much longer. So if you're doing extended camping, that might be a good option if you want to keep things cold. Finally, if I'm okay with at least starting a fire (but not really tending food on it), I sometimes do pre-made breakfast burritos wrapped in foil. Throw them into the coals and let them warm up.

There’s only two if us, I’m 61 and hubby is 64, we have started a veggie garden (although the raised beds he built were very expensive), and have limited eating out. I’m also working on not wasting food. I don’t stock pile food much, and have a small freezer as we don’t buy much meat. We're doing so bad grocery shopping. Soooo bad. There are 6 of us (ages 42, 40, 23, 20, 17, and 7). There are extenuatuating circumstances. Most of us are grown, and our middle 2 are on the spectrum so they have sensory issues. Our 17 year old is severely autistic and very lactose intolerant. Most of us are to a much lesser extent. The only specialty stuff I buy for that is a frozen pizza for our pizza Saturdays (plus a couple regular) and a couple cartons weekly of lactose free great value milk. We also have a few allergies and sensitivities. My husband and I both work full time. I work from home to be here for my school age childdren and children with special needs, but I work multiple jobs. Time and energy lead ne to rely on convenience items a lot. I also don't drive because of a vision issue, so I go grocery shopping every Saturday on a schedule. My husband gets any fill in stuff that we need otherwise. I do buy all household stuff in with the groceries but I'm spending like $400 a week at the very least. I know some of it is that I just can't cook everything from scratch and some is our situation and some is I just need to buckle down and do better.

Camping food 101. The week before you leave meal prep all your food and freeze! Then use what thaws first! For a trip to the lake, tent camping for 5 days for 6 people I made 18 breakfast burritos, 12 breakfast sandwiches, and five 2 gallon freezer bags with pork chili verde, beef stew, green chile chicken, loaded baked potato soup and chicken and shrimp jambalaya. We have a giant Yeti cooler and we actually had to take stuff out to thaw because the Yeti keeps everything frozen! Also packed 2 loaves of bread, lunch meat, sliced cheeses and mustard so we could make sandwiches to take down to the beach with us, or in our packs if we were hiking or biking. Our giant cast iron pot is awesome to cook dinner in on the fire at night when it cools down!

I've been able to keep my grocery costs low by using food waste prevention apps (I use foodhero and flashfood) in order to buy foods that I proceed to freeze afterwards. The foods are usually between 30% to 80% off, depending on how close they are to their date. I also started going to the bulk food store more often to fill up my jars. For example, I got a cup worth of bay leaves for 0.83$ CAD!! (Probably around 0.50-0.65$ USD). That amount of bay leaves would likely cost 8-10$ in here. In my case, the more environmentally-friendly options turn out to be my best money savers 😊 I'm hoping to start a little balcony garden in my appartment soon, but we'll see how that goes. Have a fun time camping, Christine! 🎉

Camping hacks for us: I pre make a bunch of breakfast burritos when I have leftover ingredients. Wrap them up in foil and put 4-6 in freezer bags. When we go camping, pull out however many you need for each day. Quick and easy, and no extra prep cooking for vacation. While camping, throw them in a pan over the cook stove, foil and all, and turn a couple of times. Since everything but the shells are pre-cooked, it’s pretty quick, easy, and portable. Plus if you wrap them in a towel after heating them, they will stay warm if you don’t want to eat them right away. Groceries: We are on the west coast, so most of our proteins are caught, hunted, or harvested. We try to keep our grocery budget on dairy, fruits, veg, with occasional snacks. We don’t buy processed or pre-made items. We make from scratch. Healthier and in most cases, cheaper. I’ll have to try to start keeping track of how much fishing and hunting costs us, and then average it out to see what we do or don’t save, although we won’t give up our fresh food we get ourselves. Beef and pork, we buy from a local farmer in bulk every other year or so. Much cheaper, and better if you do it right.

A great grocery shopping tip is to shop at your local family owned grocery store for produce and discount grocers for boxed items. I can go out there and spend 50 to 100 dollars a week and get two carts full of food. Also, for camping- i happen to be going camping this weekend coming for Memorial Day, too!!! Hard boil eggs at home in advance and store in your cooler over ice inside the trunk of your vehicle, chop some veggies up for snacks with single packs of dressing to take on a hike, bring trail mix, bring whole fruits, basically anything easy to just grab and go. A pot of 2 minute oatmeal and just add some pre sliced fruit to it with your other favorite ingredients. Have fun on your trip, Christine!

When we camp I like to pre-cook some meals. For breakfast I would do a large batch of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns. I make individual foil packets for each person or you could make up each packet the morning you're going to eat them. Then you just put your foil packs over the fire for a couple minutes and you're good to go. You eat right out of the foil packet so it's easy clean up as well. Of course this only works if you have a way to keep food cold. Peanut butter and banana sandwiches on whole wheat bread is a good option if you don't have a fridge or cooler.

We also do lots of freezer meals that we can throw in the crockpot for dinners. We can put them in the crockpot in the morning and they are ready for dinner when we get home from our daily adventures. It makes vacay so much easier and I don't spend half of my vacation worrying about what we are going to eat.

We do toast (cooked over the fire, you do more slices that way) with cream cheese and cut up fruit on our camping trips. Sometimes I boil eggs the morning we leave so they can add eggs to that meal

When I was growing up we always did boxed cold cereal with milk when we were camping. With fruit like oranges or bananas served on the side. If mom was feeling really fancy, she might serve a quick hot breakfast of pancakes or oatmeal.Oatmeal can be made even faster if you just boil a pot of water and mix with the instant packets.

Camping on the go goodies is home made granola cereal bars. Incorporate old cereal that the kids didn't eat up. My favorite recipe comes from the dining on a dime cookbook. I improvise on the recipe, but the basic ingredients is a great start. Also great way to use up the bottom of the box cereals. Cheerios are the best. Adult and kid friendly. All my friends request these bars when I come to gatherings.

During the height of covid I Incorporated a lot more beans, and also new beans that we really never used before. I like you cannot seem to eat down my freezers. Yes, freezers. I have a 30 cubic refrigerator freezer in my kitchen. I have a 13 cubic refrigerator freezer in my room over the garage. I have a 16 or 17 cubic up right freezer in my garage. Plus I have items in my neighbors freezer in her garage.

Hey Christine, in NZ we've been using those plastic trays for meat for forever! They phased out Styrofoam ones and went to these. Don't think we've ever had the plastic baggy type ones you have over there. The ones we have are also recyclable. NZ is big on recycling and it's kerbside, and provided free by the city council. We put out bins fir different types of plastic one week and the alternate week it's glass bottle recycling.

I wish the U S. would do better with packaging and recycling. I have cut back on plastic containers and recycle as much as I can.

Just in NZ for 3 weeks, must say #1 we need to count our blessings on our food prices in the US, costs are higher elsewhere #2 there's a way to live a less wasteful lifestyle, and spend less, as our Kiwi brothers and sisters are rocking, and #3 I really appreciate the way NZ has embraced the recycling and reduction of plastics when possible. ❤

We have been finding and using discount clearance items, and doing pantry freezer clean outs every week. I challenged myself to the extent that I literally had a bare pantry with the exception of oils and vinegars and a few leftover grains!!!! You're one of few people who can understand that kind of win!!! 😂🎉 using lots of apps rebates etc

The energy balls you’ve made. A variation on that. Make up a batch of hearty “cookies”. Elven bread.

I dont buy a lot of processed or junk food and it keeps my grocery cost down. But my husband and I are retired and enjoy going out to eat, usually for lunch. I usually count it as entertainment and don't add it in my grocery cost. But for May, I decided to add it in. Oh my, that changes my food costs drastically! Almost a third of food cost was for eating out.

In regards to the Cinnamon Rolls………since you can buy flour so cheap, just make your own dough. So very easy. Just roll out the dough, butter it and add your cinnamon and sugar. Roll it tight starting at the longest edge and seal. Use Dental Floss ( clean of course 😛 ) to slice your slices. Way cheaper than those tubes.

Meal prep breakfast burrito in a triple foil, you can heat over a grill flame if needed. Mickey D's is high if you don't use app, hot and spicy McChicken meal is cheapest at around $5.🤷♀️

For camping it depends if you're willing to heat up stuff or not. I prep & pre-plan my meals since we tent thus have limited refrigeration. Breakfast no heat = cereal, banana bread, hard boiled eggs and fruit (fresh/tinned). Heat = breakfast burritos, coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Lunches are usually sandwiches = PB&J, canned ham, BLTs (use fully cooked bacon). If I have heat = tinned soup or chili, hot dogs. For dinner, we always have heat so it's anything under the sun. Typically burgers, hot dogs, ribs, foil pack veggies. We've even done pasta when we're with family since it feeds a lot of people easily.

I refuse to make my grocery budget higher, so I just get more creative in what I make and how I buy. Kids are getting less cereal and more oatmeal for breakfasts, we do use slightly less meat in a lot of meals or I find I switch the protein to something cheaper. I am far more conscious of leftovers now, and if they're not eaten the next day they get frozen to be repurposed later.

I spend about $500 a month on groceries--family of 4 2 21 year olds. I do buy snack foods though-but I make them contribute $ for that. My freezers are full but I keep stocking up on meats when I find a good deal. I usually go to Food Lion early Saturday or sunday morning when they mark down their meats and stock up. One week I buy meats and whatever else we need for the week and the next I buy canned items, condiments etc and whatever is left i either roll it or buy more meats or extra's of other items we use. Im working on getting a few months stockpile, but its just in the beginning stage.

For camping I like to take premade or prepped with easy cleanup (like throw away the packaging easy.) For breakfast easy to eat energy bites/granola bars and fruit. Eat it before you go or on the trail. For lunch, wraps with meat, cheese, leftovers and maybe shredded lettuce. No one wants to worry about smashed bread. Dinner, grilled meat that was pre-marinated in ziploc or vacuum-packed bags. Precut veg cooked in a foil pouch.

Quick camping breakfasts for us included instant oatmeal (not necessarily the store bought packets, usually the giant container was brought, along with mix ins like fresh fruit, brown sugar, maple syrup, or jam/jelly) pre cooked bacon, cold cereal, or toast (made on a griddled Coleman stove) with peanut butter and bananas...

for the camping trip breakfast ideas, i'd suggest pre-making english muffin sandwiches, or breakfast burritos, muffins, or even waffles also, hot dogs is usually our hiking lunch - yes you do need to get the fire going, but everyone cooks their own sausage and put the hot dog together
