More than 60% of incarcerated persons in prisons across Malaysia are minor drug offenders, like Liyana here. This has contributed to our prisons operating at 40% over capacity, with up to 12 people occupying cells that were designed only for four - as it was in Liyana's case.
#ItsTimeforAlternatives is a joint campaign to call for alternative sentences for minor drug offences, as studies have long proven that prison sentences are counter-productive. Support the campaign by signing the petition here: www.pilihpeluang.my/itstimefor...
#ChangeStartsWithAlternativeSentencing
* This campaign is a collective effort by SUARAM, HAKAM YOUTH, Ceria, LoveFrankie, Pilih Peluang and The Fourth.

A very insightful video about youth incarceration due to minor drug offence. It's something not often addressed and I learnt something new today. Hope for better and more effective alternatives. It's not about letting these offences go unsanctioned, but about disciplining them in a way that creates better and more productive outcomes for the individuals and our society. It takes a lot of resources to imprison someone (what more unnecessary imprisonment). Rakyat jugak yg kena bayar akhirnya. Also video production is superb! Hope to hear more of such stories.

Thanks so much, Alanna! You've summarised the issue so eloquently. Hope the message gets through to people so we can truly start creating better outcomes in the lives of those that are affected. And we'll definitely have more videos to come, so hope you'll show some love and hit that Subscribe button :)

Well spoken and articulated. Proud of you. Very relatable. I myself was incarcerated twice for non violent consumption and possession of cannabis but in Singapore. I’m 24 now. The laws here are similar if not worse. Now that I’m out I’m blessed to bounce back as well and I’m currently with a local organisation called Transformative Justice Collective that advocates and lobby harm reduction treatments for drug offence and the abolishment of the death penalty.

Criminal records are scary. Where do we expect these people to go after prison?

Without #AlternativeSentencing, we can expect many of them to go back to prison, sometimes for heavier crimes.

Sadly, many drug offenders are not quite as lucky. After leaving prison, they have little access to treatment or rehabilitation for their substance use disorder, and job opportunities are incredibly scarce. Because of that, they can easily get sucked into harder crimes and substances. That’s why experts are calling for non-prison alternative sentences for minor drug offenders.

I am sorry but no, the law does not ruin the person's future, the person does that to oneself. Of course we need to address the problem of minor drug abuse, but isn't the law design exactly to do that? There are contradictory studies on the effectiveness of law enforcement and education in reducing crime. To have a simple belief of education can reduce criminal activities is just naive and hopeful for the sake of hope.

I once paid cops big amounts so they wouldn't take me in for small amounts of marijuana, if i hadn't done that my story would be same to yours. Stay strong and society will change in time. Wishing you the best

Wow you are supporting corruption , just like Najib. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Well done.

@@radamadam4309does he really have a choice there? I mean, if you had the same options available to you then you would also pick the same decisions he made. After watching the documentary, are you still willing to go to prison for a trial that will be delayed again and again until it reaches years? Having a criminal record and unable to be employed. Broke and repressed by society, having crime become the only source of income available for you. The world runs on money, whether we like it or not. I don't support his decision for bribe, but I understand why he did it. You too don't have to support his choice, but you need to understand why he did it.

@@altype_4046 So corruption is good when it benefits you? got it. Typical Malaysian mentality. Bending the rule of law to what ever fits you. Like i said - The apple doesn't fall far from the tree , same like Najib lah.

What is the charge? Sounds fishy. Section 15(1) or section 6 or section 39(a)(1). What happened to bail?

Just because it rhymes, doesn't mean it's right. Prison sentences have been proven to be counterproductive in reducing substance abuse.

This is the sort of thinking that allowed laws like this to exist for years, destroying many lives in the process. Imagine this lack of empathy among police, lawyers, judges, employers, society. Thats what produce more hardcore criminals. This could easily happen to your siblings, your children, your close friends. Imagine that

@@TheFourth with all due respect but a country with a very low crime rate carrying out these sentences, it’s obvio is that their system works.
