This story was a lot harder to shoot than I made it appear - we really had to battle confrontation with the “bad guys” every single moment that I had my gopro out on the streets. But in the end, I am really happy with this story because I think it gives a unique look into the street life culture and amazing people of São Paulo!! I’m from the Dominican Republic and as a foreigner myself, I think I can answer this question, it’s because of the media, every time we hear something about Brazil, it’s either because something crazy happened or it’s something related to the carnival in Rio, so unfortunately the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Brazil, it’s dangerous hoods and half nak’d women dancing around, you should do the same the Colombians are doing, back in the 80’s and 90’s and maybe into the early 2000’s Colombia was perceived as a war torn country run by drug lords, but they have managed to change that perception with their tourism in Medellin and Bogota.

It has about 12 million inhabitants and in 2023 had 481 homicides -- the states of North Carolina and Georgia (both with about 11 million inhabitants) had 821 and 909 homicides respectively. If it were in the United States it would rank as one of the lowest murder rates among large cities. I agree though that it is dangerous due to property theft and armed robberies.

It's disappointing to see yet another portrayal of São Paulo that focuses only on its challenges and perpetuates the stereotype of a dangerous and unwelcoming city. Drew's video falls into the same trap as much of the mainstream media, offering a one-dimensional view that ignores the rich and multifaceted history of São Paulo. São Paulo is a city built on the dreams and labor of immigrants from around the world. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Middle Eastern immigrants, among others, made São Paulo their home, contributing to its dynamic cultural fabric. Today, this vibrant blend is evident in the city's diverse neighborhoods, festivals, and culinary scene. Moreover, São Paulo has a storied past that includes significant contributions to Brazil's economic and cultural development. It is the heart of Brazil's financial industry, housing the São Paulo Stock Exchange (B3), and is a hub for innovation and creativity in sectors ranging from technology to fashion. The city is also renowned for its cultural institutions, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the Latin American Memorial, and Ibirapuera Park, designed by the legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer. While it is crucial to address and acknowledge the issues the city faces, it's equally important to recognize its resilience, its role as a melting pot of cultures, and its contributions to Brazil's identity. By focusing solely on the negatives, Drew misses the opportunity to present a more balanced and nuanced view of São Paulo, one that celebrates its complexity and spirit.

Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! My jaw dropped as I learnt Native American population in their motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION.. It is a shocking sad truth.

Hahahahaha!!! I´m from Brazil and those places are like that: Drug lords control the territory and they don´t like when you take pictures of them or film their soldiers. But also they don´t allow petty crimes in the area like pickpoqueting or more serious crimes like r@pes. In some areas, a violent wife-beater would be in trouble after a talk with the drug dealers if he doesn´t change his behavior. They need to keep the place safe or otherwise the police will make incursions in their area what leads to confrontation.Also, users don´t buy drugs in a place that´s having constant fire exchanges between drug dealers and the police. Cheers from Brazil.

My home city in the US is considered generally "dangerous," and especially "dangerous" in certain neighborhoods, so I really get the dichotomy of locals saying they don't feel in danger but also cautioning you a lot. And when I've talked to other people from places that have a "dangerous" reputation it's the same feeling: On one hand, for the locals who go through daily life there, it's just a place where people live, and if you know how to carry yourself and go about daily life in a normal and calm way it isn't that dangerous. On the other hand you have to understand when you're vulnerable because you're clearly out of place. In my home city the level of crime is VERY rarely random violent crime, most of the random crime is petty, and most of the violent crime is very specific, i.e. interpersonal and/or gang related, so I don't think you're in much danger as just a random person living there, but at the same time you will put yourself in the way of unwanted attention and conflict if you walk around looking scared or confused or high energy or flashy in some way. So the understanding of how a place can be both is really obvious to me, everything is subjective. The guy saying that perception comes from racism and classism is so real.

Also, Rio is more dangerous than São Paulo (from what I know/hear). I think THAT may be the actual 'most dangerous city in the Americas'. I know you can get mugged just walking down the beachfront there - or even just sitting ON the beach. If you went there, you would have probably had your camera stolen.
@bruxolocodek96 ай бұрын
Guys, I'm Brazilian and favelas are very dangerous, or do you really think that 3 translators refused because they didn't want to go there? The truth is in Brazil the values are all the opposite, where being a criminal is the reference. The reason you can't record in the favelas is because there are hundreds of fugitives and people with guns walking freely through the streets. Some things are true but others are not, the boy said that the place is safe and yes, in parts it is, that's because if you are caught stealing inside the favela, the traffickers will kill you, record you and you’ll an example. But he didn't say that 100 meters from this place everything is free. The entire favela is taken over by the drug trafficking that takes place inside and outside it. Most residents don't admit that it's hell to live there, but when they have the chance to leave, they leave. I dont speak english so sorry for my bad english.
