Something I will say... spending 20k fixing this car up has made me respect and love it 1000% more, compared to how I'd feel about just buying it like this for 20k. The search results state that "500 individually numbered Ralliart models had been planned", but due to budget constraints, the final production number was lower than originally planned. However, the exact number of Magna Ralliart cars sold is not provided in the search results. The Magna Ralliart was only produced in 2002 as a special, limited edition model.

Great video Sean. At the monthly car show I go to, people think it's cheap to restore a classic car. You'll find these so-called experts scrutinizing your car & pick on the most tiniest of things. You'll get this yourself when you show off the Ralliart & some of these comments can hurt. I restored my '03 Holden VY Series I S Ute 3.8L on a bet 10 years ago & the budget was $10K including the price of the Ute. I bought the ute for $1800. The body was a bit tired but the mechanicals were well looked after. Everything I bought was brand new from Holden except the hard lid, seats & the leather steering wheel. I got great prices for replacement trim & parts from my local Holden dealer at trade prices. I OEM+ the ute. The cigarette pack back in the day was a $695 option & I picked it up from Holden for $55. I converted it for USB use. The bodywork I did myself & the undercoat & paint was done by a friend of mine. All up It cost me a tiny fraction over $10K (I still won the bet!) & my ute now is still a showroom ute that turns heads. I wasn't after the garage queen look but a solid daily driver which I still use. The nasty comments I get from the so-called experts at car shows is that "It's not a V8". I usually tell them to go restore their own car first before making any comments. I'm still in the throes of restoring my '03 Holden Series I S Ute with the factory optioned LS1. Parts & trim are scarce now but I'm still getting there. Sean at the end of the day I know you're happy with the Ralliart & you'll keep it for a good long while. Take it to car shows as it's rare. You'll get some good comments for it but beware of the so-called experts. It's these people who know nothing about cars that'll put you down but you'll ignore them. Personally, I think you've done well with the Ralliart getting it up to scratch. It wont be long before you have it on historic plates.

It sound's like you still have thing's you are doing with it too. Plus I'm not certain what modifications you were planning. A couple of small rust spots, about 280,000 kays, but very well looked after mechanically and everything works and drives very well. Before I purchased it, it had front brakes and rotors, front wheel bearings done, new coil packs and plugs and a new gas converter. Paid $1200. Tell me what you think of the gas Barra motors. Anyway, if one has the attitude of “I spent $20,000 on the car so I’ll sell it for $24000 to get my money back” then one is in for the shock of their lives. You’ve spent that money to clearly enjoy the car as it’s supposed to be enjoyed. Some prices that people ask for cars on Marketplace and Carsales seems to indicate that they’re trying to recoup every single cent that they spent on the car, including registration, insurance and regular maintenance. You’re clearly NOT one of them. I’ve subscribed as your channel is excellent viewing. Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately I agree with you that you have probably spent more than it is worth. However, it appears to be one of those cars with character and dare I say even a little bot of soul. You have brought back a Aussie car with some style that I suspect will provide you with years of reliable and critically enjoyable driving. I would also say that the Magna is a bit less serious than your Falcon and will be perfect as a fun reliable daily that is not boring, is not the same as every other car in the carpark and which will bring a cheeky smile to your face each time you drive it. So despite potentially being worth less than you spent I don't think you have wasted a any money on your restoration and you have brought back a cool car and you have maintained some Australian motoring heritage. It's the same for my 2002 landcruiser with the 1HD-FTE engine - old, getting worn down, but still a great all-rounder compared to what's available. Then the new 300 series costs more than the average rural house...

in a few short years you can put NSW Historical Vehicle plates on it 🥲

I feel your pain. I bought a 98 Volvo C70 coupe. I've spent about 2 times the purchase price....I ask myself every night before sleeping if I can recoup the cost lol.

Don’t know if it’s worth 20k, however having another piece of Aussie motoring history back on the road is priceless. Good work mate I look forward to your TRD Aurion 😅

You legit did a great job with this car Sean! Even with the hiccups, it’s seriously turned out great! I’m genuinely so happy for you mate. I know it’s a lot of money when you add it up like that but the payoff is, I hope, very much worth it to you. I know I’d love to roll around in that car haha. Keep up the great work mate!

Well doing up cars is never going to be cheap. But you did it and look at what you have learnt along the way.😀

I’ve noticed in the last few years spares etc. have rally gone up in price. Freight too has gone up a lot. The classic car market/hobby is booming ATM and I think a lot of suppliers are cashing in. But…..there are not a lot of options.

Interesting to see an OBD2 code reader in the box. I did not think (don't know) the magna had an OBD2 compatible port. At least that's what I think about my TF Altera. Which is a few years older admittedly. Nice build. But 20K is more than I thought you should spend. I've had my Magna for 27 years and it is getting old and in need of suspension work and a timing belt and a few other routine sort of age things. I had three Sigmas before that. I've spent about $1000 on the parts and I'll have a go at doing as much myself as I can. OK it's not a Ralliart but Mitsubishi Magnas were always a poor cousin even though I like mine.

Hi Sean, interested in reading your thoughts about working on the Magna compared to the other cars you have owned and whether you had a top 10 list of the best cars you have owned and their driving experiences. You have certainly put in a lot of effort here on the Ralliart. I think Mitsubishi Magna’s, 380’s and even Sigmas are nicely built and quite under valued. My 380, with its 6G75 which is an entry level model has been the most reliable vehicle I have owned and I have owned many cars.

You definitely spent more then what I thought you where going to, but that's probably due to the respray (which seeing the finished product was worth it). Hope you enjoy and don't get up to too much mischief mate.

That's still cheaper than what I spent doing a turbo conversion on my 2002 Subaru Outback. I did keep some track of my costs but not all of them because, well once it went north of $20k I stopped wanting to know haha. And it hasn't had one dollar spent on bodywork.

I went well over budget on a bike build . Spent $8500. Would be lucky to get $7000. But do not regret it. Still have it and is always a pleasure to take for a ride.

Sean great job on the Magna 20 k is very reasonable since it is now nearly a new car Painting like you say is the biggest problem if yo cannot do it yourself I have an old ef falcon that I have had fro7 years spent over 5000 and still so much to do My budget I set was ten but I can paint it myself, I have just sold it for 3000 as I have come to. Conclusion I don’t have the spare time to finish it which makes me quite sad 😢 I say old on you for fixing the Magna they were and still are such a very good car 👍👍👍

If you love it, it’s worth it. Especially for sharing its story. Keep it up!! For what it’s worth, I’m currently doing a similar restoration on my old SL merc, all cosmetic including full soft top hydraulic and canvas replacement- plus some frame components for good measure. Anyway- it’s about the same. It costs what it costs.

$20k is a lot of money and honestly, I doubt you are going to get your money back!! BUT, stay with me!! For $20k, you have restored a piece of Australian automotive manufacturing history, which honestly, is priceless considering this once great industry is sadly, no more. Great job on doing such a great job and sharing the journey with the world, which in itself is no easy feat. How iconic would this story finish up if the vehicle ended it's journey as a piece of automotive history at the Mitsubishi Auto Gallery in Japan 😍👏👏👏

Been loving this long and at times painful journey Sean! Love how its turned out! Rumor has it Bowdens own have a new abrasive polish coming out. Maybe you should reach out to them to see if they will help tart it up after the paint job! A tour of their place would also make a great video!
