I always had a fear of trying Couchsurfing. I did not know many people who had done it and could share their experiences. But this time, here in Mexico, I decided to give it a try. I desperately wanted to see how locals live. It is nice to see the country from the outside but sometimes walking around the streets is not enough to get the essence of the culture. I wanted to see how people of my age communicate to their friends, what kind of music they listen to, what they have for breakfast, how they feel about their country, about their jobs, about their government, and about being Mexican...
One thing I want to highlight is that doing such a thing should be well-thought out, especially when you are so far from your home and loved ones. I am extremely grateful for Cristina's hospitality but, since I didn't know her, I had a plan B before going there. I knew there were a couple of hostels available in Guanajuato and if something went wrong, I could always stay there. I guess I am trying to say that you do need to be careful when it comes to trusting strangers. This time I trusted my gut and everything went absolutely amazingly.

I'm planning my two month exchange in Mexico alone ,I randomly chose Mexico ( usually I am more curious about Asian countries ) and I'm so happy to see a girl traveling solo , because I've heard so much things about safety in mexico and it's a shame because seems like a wonderful country!

Hey Kalina! I would say that Mexico is a safe place if you plan everything smart and know where to go and where not to go. There are some cities and towns you should avoid but really it's a beautiful country and there's SO MUCH to see!

I love your courage to travel alone. The love story is brutal...The city looks lovely but I can feel your pain of having to walk lots of stairs and then ending up in a dead-end. I love the shot of the dogs looking out of the window and your time lapse of hanging clothes (also doing that type of thing on a rooftop must be a lovely experience with that view). I purchased but never read Don Quixote, so it's still on my To-Read List! I'm an optimistic dreamer though and just like him...and I've been riding towards windmills too. The long key is crazy, I'm not much of a fan of love locks though as they damage more than they do good. Even though they look pretty a lot of people seem to hang them onto historic fences, causing a lot of damage to them...Love how you build your videos, keep it up!

Hey! Thanks so much! I will keep the idea in mind. But to sum up I think my secret is following: stay in hostels, couchsurf if you feel comfortable, eat mostly supermarket food and maybe eat out once a day and don’t feel shy to tell people you are on budget (everyone gets on board and tries to find free or cheap activities to do). This last one is the most important one! Start small, go to your neighboring town first, honestly I have eaten on parking lots countless times and it makes me as happy as 5 star restaurant can do. You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable or broke haha
