For the month of May, we're doing a series on Star Wars games, beginning with none other than Star Wars: Empire at War, also known as the best Star Wars strategy game of all time, and one that definitely deserves a sequel! Empire at War was fantastic when it released in 2006, and is still a unique marvel today. But what exactly makes it so great? That's what we're here to find out!

I always thought it would be cool to start a game as a leader in the Clone Wars, and then after Order 66 to be forced to chose a side in the Galactic Civil war... taking some of those resources from the previous conflict with you.

that exists to some extent in fall of the republic, it allows you to chose who you want to side with during order 66 and if you side with palpatine you start getting imperial star destroyers (called imperator class in game) sadly it doesn't go fully into the galactic civil war era

As I’m sure other mention the modding community has kept this game alive. Modern huge overalls that might as well be sequels like Awakening of the Rebellion, Thrawns Revenge, Fall of the Republic (best prequel era mod IMO) , And the “Remake” mod. Sincerely despite this never getting an official sequel, try out some of those mods and you will not be disappointed!

Remember, THIS GAME CAME OUT IN 2006! 2000-2010 truly was the golden age of gaming. And its Arguably BETTER THEN TOTAL WAR these days. And they KEPT SUPPORTING IT even till this day, they even reenabled Multiplayer. (Steam version only) The most unique thing about Empire At War is that it combines GROUND AND SPACE battles, in REAL TIME with TACTICAL BATTLES. (seriously this is just Total War in Real Time) The base game is grate, still has a bug or 2 but with the support the game continues to get (i hope) im sure they will eventually be fixed. the MODS are where its at though, Fall of the Republic if your looking for Clone Wars, Awakening of the Rebellion if your looking for something similar yet different. Then their is EAW Remake.....haven't played it yet but, it changes ALOT of things about the game that i feel makes it different from EAW is supposed to be. BUT THOSE GRAPHICS, the game never looked SO GOOD.

Jay, I think I must agree with you. Even though we have truly amazing titles from the last decade and this one as well, say The Witcher 3, God of War, Dark Souls 1-3 and Elden Ring, the games from 2000-2010 just hit different… so fricking good, rarely was I disappointed, and I KEEP PLAYING THEM 15 years later! It’s insane, man. Will definitely have to check out those mods.

@@hoplon88 Im quite serious actually. They are basically the same thing, obviously EAW is a RTS so its not quite the same but they are very similar. Total War, Turn Based Campaign map with Real time tactical battles. Empire At War, Real time campaign map (their is a pause button for both Campaign and the battles), real time tactical battles. You build buildings, recruit units, you get income every "week" to spend on units and buildings. You even have hero units just like TW WH but they are far more balanced and the AI is ACTUALLY CONFIDENT unlike TWs AI which has barely improved over the past 10 years. And just like TW the mods just make the game better, but the game itself is already good in its own right.

you're right :/ I really miss the days without microtransactions and excessively long dev times.. we got massive new games almost every year or two from the same devs, now that often takes twice that time, and even then with so many more bugs and lacking features, it seems.

An amazing game to check out would be X-wing alliance from the 90s. There is a huge community modding project for that game that has redone basically the entire game at this point, integrated head tracking, improved the engine, and more. On top of that there is a team that brought the old Tie Fighter flight game into this new updated X-wing alliance engine, and are working on a re-imagining of the tie fighter campaign with much bigger battles taking advantage of modern technology.

If petroglyph could release a new updated version of the game people would go absolutely nuts. The game engine really slows things down and it’s a significant bottleneck. The modding community for this game has kept it alive for so long. The 4.0 release of the galactic civil war mod, Thrawns revenge, the Republic at war mods, show how much potential the game has

It's not the stock campaigns that make this game great, it's the mods. Mods like Thrawns Revenge have been continuously developing and tweaking this game ever since it was releassed all the way up to this day. There are story campaigns that when played in sequence can cove all the way from the Clone Wars right the way up to shortly before the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. There are also newer multi-player modes but the single player campaigns are what show the real strengths of this game. Also some of the mod campaigns actually manage to make the ground combat fun which is something that the original never really managed to do.

If you want to see empire at war completely changed and with 2016 Visuals take a look at the Remake mod. There are so many things, that were thought impossible, achieved by the modding community of this game.

I'm not sure why my comment was removed. That is super annoying. I just wanted to say that this game was a big slice of my childhood and Star Wars is my Fandom of choice (although I do enjoy many!). It was nice to come home after my trip to see this video! I used to love scrolling through the star wars website for hours as a kid! I would love to watch you play one of the new mods! I only dipped my toes recently but it is so good! By the way, you asked if the drink I mentioned was Japanese or not on a previous video. I was enjoying a grape juice with bits of aloe while watching this video. You can get it only in the vending machines here!

When I first played Empire at War, I loved the space combat and tried to skip the fighting on the worlds. With the present perspective, I can say that I was the Covenant. Nowadays, I just play Sins of a Solar Empire Interregnum mod.

I’m on my first playthrough of this game now, basically a blind playthrough of galactic conquest as the empire, all 42 planets. (I did play the tutorials of course, and no mods yet) and my strategy is that the rebels can’t take planets if every choke point and planet is protected by a big fuck off fleet. I just reached day 30 in the war, and had my first engagement with the main rebel fleet. It was Home one, a few blockade runners, two missile cruisers, and a few nebulon Bs. I showed up with two ISDs, 3 victory class SDs, 3 acclimators, and like 8 patrol craft. Rebel fleet didn’t stand a chance.

I always play galactic conquest as the empire, I built the Death Star and destroyed every planet, had a fleet of 78 star destroyers, 176 victory class cruisers, 20 broadside cruisers, 20 tartan cruisers, 78 acclamator cruisers and 4 interdicter cruisers used to prevent hyperspace jumps and to completely destroy the rebel fleet

Just got this with the Forces of Corruption expansion on the 4th. Best purchase I made. Personally, I love the space battles more than the ground battles, especially when I'm on the Rebellion taking on the Empire. It's funny to watch the Empire throw everything at you and lose twice as many forces as you do before they eventually achieve victory.

I got this game as a kid and quite honestly... It is probably the game I played the most as a youngling. It would had been Battlefront 2 if I didn't lose that disk in a motel... Long story... :(( Also a game I have massive nostalgia for. I am glad that Empire at War could help me cope with that loss and quite honestly even surpass the nostalgia in a way. Battlefront 2 is more illusive nostalgia as a lot of my thoughts are related to missing the game. Meanwhile Empire at War could run on most computers I owned so it became a go to game when going on trips and around the place and since my dad is a fan of driving and camping trips... This means Empire at War almost feels like a massive part of my childhood. And I honestly think that I can't even imagine what I would be like without it. I was young. I am a 2001 kid... I am also a fan of Lego and stuff and this year with the release of the Tie Interceptor set had me pog facing real hard. I haven't bought it yet... But EaW made me love the Tie Interceptor even more than the original Tie Fighter and find the sight of a Tie Interceptor more nostalgic for me than any other Star Wars ship. Because I played FoC quite a lot. And when people play this they ask me what my opinion on Thrawns Revenge or this or that mod is... And quite honestly the truth is... While I imagine those mods are GREAT... I have just been playing vanilla mostly. 😂 I dabbled in Republic at War mod before the workshop update. And I have even made my own personal custom maps. Theed City, which is something I made for when I play Republic at War but it works on unmodded too of course, and Tantive IV... Which is a land battle inside the Tantive IV... With vehicles. It is a little nonsensical but I think personally I love the level design I made. It's an asymmetric push map with the very start of the level having the iconic blasting down of the door scene. Not perfectly accurate of course but still I could show and impress my friends with it. The corridors are not as... Smooth as I wanted but unfortunately the map editor has some limitations when it comes to that. Either way it works pretty decently. There is also a little spawn for the Consortium if you want to do a little bit of trolling. 😁 I have forever wanted to do something similar for the Battle of Hoth but unfortunately I think the main issue is Hoth is pretty flat and the main issue is you can't really make trenches that easily in the editor. But either day... One day I will and I will then consider actually sharing them online I guess. All and all... Autistic Comfort media / Out of Ten. It may not be the GOAT game. But it's my personal GOAT.

Thanks for the tip, but fun fact: there actually is a need, I find, as the filter on the mic itself helps with softening (removing “static” etc), while the actual pop filter removes most of the large pops from plosives :)

well, if you wanna be technical the rebellion blew up a massive space station which was being worked on by MANY MANY civilian workers, ig the rebels (lorewise) are attempting to do the right thing for the right reasons but still sometimes make mistakes, the empire is just your standard oppresive regime with evil/militaristic leadership. ig they both aren't really good and it just comes down the lesser of the two evils if you wanna think about it like that haha.... i would get this game its a great star wars game, especially with mods.

I still play this gome just modded and I totally forgot that the empire has the Arc Hammer in the base game. :D If you looking forward to play this game I can recommend Awakening of the Rebellion(Really hard but so cool mod) and Empire at War Expanded:Thrawn's Revenge(Post ednor Imperial Civil war era mod with tons of unique factions and nice heros+mechanics) lastly Empire at War Expanded: Fall of The Republic(Clone wars era mod from the Thrown's Revenge team,ths one is new and not as polished as Thrawn's Revenge but still one of the best mods),there are EaW Reworked but I didn't try that one so I can't say an opinion about it.

One of the rare times we got Star Wars RTS game for some reason. I don't recall any other SW rts beside this and Battlegrounds, which let's be honest was just reskin of Age of Empires 2. @@AndysTake I haven't tried Fall of the Republic as far as I remember, but there are several clone wars mods that basically have the same concept but do it differently. Of the ones I have tried, Republic at War is the one I liked most. It has a really awesome galactic conquest map and it's so well made with so much attention to detail that it barely even feels like a mod. This might also be true about Fall of the Republic, I don't know.

@@AndysTake My favorite mod is Awakening of the Rebellion 2.9.3: All Wings Report in (long title ik), its my favorite mod and to me the most replayable (tho i have yet to try thrawns revenge). Like you said you wish that you could play in the prequal era Fall of the republic is a fun mod for that, so is Republic at War.

There’s 2 mods: Thrawn’s Revenge, and Fall of the Republic, that are the best mods in this game. Since you’re a clone wars fan I’d suggest Fall of the republic first, because you get to experience all the Jedi in land battles and amazing republic and CIS ships.

SWEAW in a nutshell: Rebels: Mon Mothma wont shut up long enough to defeat the empire. i lost 3 planets to the death star before she stfu so i could acquire Luke. Empire: Just ignore Tarkin he's an idiot. Zann: Aww your loyal to how cute #Corruption. Thrawn's Revenge Mod: Nuke It From Orbit its the only way to be sure.

"Sad" Fact: Petroglyph, the dev team who made Empire at War and Forces of Corruption also wanted to make an "EaW 2", but since the SW licence was on EA's hands at the time, they got refused, and right now they've been working on a new game (not Star Wars) and it's unlikely that we'll be seeing an EaW style SW game any time soon, but it's very clear they want to do it, since they still release updates for EaW Also, since you're a Prequels guy, I recommend you to try Fall of the Republic, an FoC mod made by the people who made Thrawn's Revenge

Just saying, it would be an immediate click from me if I saw a "Part 2:" of this episode on modded EaW. I put in hundreds of hours before I finally caved and downloaded some mods (pretty easy on Steam actually). Yes the new ships, and bases, and scale, and economics are amazing. But I wasn't expecting it to look so freakin beautiful. The space battles are on another level. Plus John Williams bringing the heat overtop of all that... srsly, it's worth checking out, even if you don't make a video about it. Cheers

Love that game to bits since release. But seriously, ISD and MonCal cruisers aren't that good. They only have Turbolaser and Ion cannon batteries, which are only good against cruiser class ships and up. They're useless against fighter and bomber craft. And thus you get a stone paper scissors type of game. Bomber>capital ships>cruiser/frigate>bomber.

yeah, it hat space and ground battles but lets be honest... the ground battles weren't fun. I always let the ground battle auto-resolve since I didn't like them, but oh boy, did I love the space battles

There are massive rumors on reddit going around from people that have emailed petroglyph and got an answer back about a possible EAW 2, as of right now EA and Disney own the rights for star wars but if they wanted to outsource a star wars game to a different company to make and still make money off they can do that too, They apparently have been asking EA for the rights to make a second one due to it having such an amazing fanbase and mods, So we should all keep our hopes up it'll still come in our lifetime XD
