Greg's playing is melodic, unpredictable, technical, and always rhythmically locked in. Just bought tickets to an upcoming show with Stu Hamm last night, looking forward to getting my face melted.

Thanks Levi for featuring Greg again on your channel ! Greg deserves the attention ! He has indeed a few special picking and fretting "systems" going on and a big bag of long sequences that translate well to different sets of strings and CAGED positions so you can't "catch" him using those more than once ;-) Add to that that everything is working together beautifully well and an out of this world "musicality" and you got in my opinion one of the best musicians/guitarists on the planet. Been transcribing for more than a decade ;-)

I share your confusion in regard to his fingerings/phrasing. Makes for a pretty unique sound. The great fusion guys have really identifiable characteristic idiosyncrasies, almost like a fingerprint, and Mr. Howe is no different. Thanks again for the great content.

Greg Howe fan going back to the 80's; dude was a huge influence on me wanting to play the guitar. So smooth, fluid and tasty in his phrasing. I like that he doesn't always have to go right to speed; sometimes using it sparingly to build tension first and then introducing something blistering to finish a thought. Yes, of course, the speedy stuff was en vogue in the 80's and he's got his share, but his overall body of work is way more than that.

greg is TOTALLY unorthodox. been taking private lessons from him for 10 years and he's totally changed the way I think about the fretboard (still nowhere close to as good as him, though LOL). I don’t know about unknown, but he’s earned his session stripes in Justin Timberlakes’s live band, back in the day. Seems to be quite common with 80s shredders, especially the Shrapnel stable… Brett Garsed with John Farnham Nuno with Rihanna Andy Timmons with the late great Olivia Newton-John Ritchie “lock up your daughters/wives/mums 😂” Kotzen with Poison & Mr Big

There it is! There's the sound that every up and coming guitarist should focus on? Sort of like, it has a little bit of everything needed to be a Great guitar player! Got the Funkiness, blues/jazz, arpeggios you need to keep you busy! There's not only one genre there! I can only imagine "how many hours he had put into his playing to get to that level"? Maybe about the same amount of hours a professional basketball player has to practice to get into the professional league?

My guess as an explanation for what you were talking about with the way Greg frets certain passages, is that perhaps because he is a self-taught guitarist, doesn’t read music, etc, is that he has ways he learned or taught himself how to play over certain chords from a certain position, so he’ll move around to accommodate his own vocabulary, whereas another guitarist might try and do something about a chord change in the same part of the neck. Just my guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Levi, do you have any courses or tips for being able to ‘hear’ different rhythms at fast speeds. For example, once it gets into shred territory, it’s hard for me to ‘hear’ whether it’s 32nd notes or 16th note triplets - stuff like that. Thanks. And cool video as always 🙏
@orshy1
@orshy1 Жыл бұрын
I've heard it referred to as "chunking". You basically practice to recognize the note groupings as their length in relation to a beat. So four 16th notes is one beat. If you focus on feeling/hearing that group of four 16th notes you'll be able to more quickly parse the music or to set your playing more towards "auto-pilot" as it will be based on feel and counting groups of notes instead of individual ones.

Don't you all get it? ANY guitarist whose last name is Howe is going to be phenomenal at it. Isn't that funny how he and Steve have the same last name, and they are both awesome. Could Steve do this if he wanted to? Go watch Steve Howe performing for Les Paul. If he can do that, then you know that he can do anything with a guitar. I'm a fan of them both.

Thank you very much! Brilliant job! Yes, understanding his uncoventional guitar playing is quite challenging. In this case (video) is straightforward what is right and wrong, but tabbing out songs like this from an audio track leaves a transcriber no other choice than just guessing and providing at least a coherent, plausible (even if not "right") interpretation. Right and wrong about trascribing... interesting topic indeed!

Genuinely one of my favorites. Played live for Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake interestingly enough. Recorded two albums with Richie Kotzen. Think about it. Richie Kotzen and Greg on one album trading licks. Who thought to do that? One of those players on an album is scary enough. Two of them? Absolutely frightening.

He has the most awkward fingering ever. I have been fascinated by that since I saw him the first time long ago. I couldn’t understand what I heard and process what I saw. Nevertheless he is an amazing guitarist but has a tricky way to play things. It looks in some ways impossible and a stupid way to fingerling things, but it works. I saw him live not to long ago with Simon Philips and it was hypnotising to watch him play and it was a subject for conversation in the car on our 2,5 hour drive home. Amazing player.
