Well, indeed, I also need to stop buying all clothes...but specifically, I am your opposite, skinny jeans always and forever, I really tried straight legs, but they just aren't comfortable or flattering on me. That was a costly lesson, because I always faulted the model I had bought and kept searching for the "perfect pair"... You've really helped me a lot to open my eyes, so thank you very much, Christina. I'm so excited for you to be debt free, such a huge achievement ! Xxx

Some ppl buy Chanel for investment cuz they just get more expensive while ppl lose jobs in pandemic cuz others have more savings... it's annoying. I can't afford one, well I could but I would never.
@edennis85783 жыл бұрын
Paige, I totally agree. Practically speaking, if someone doesn't have at least 10x the price of a Chanel bag in the bank, #1. they can't really afford one and #2. nobody in your social circle is likely to care or be impressed. Plus you might very well just make yourself a target for muggers. I know of one popular influencer who has several Chanel bags, but her engagement ring alone is worth about $70k (she posted the specs once) meaning that her husband has megabucks, even though she tries to pass herself off as one of the common herd. A lot of her followers believe that she's one of their own, and think they should have the same stuff that she does, not realizing that her net worth is in the millions.

Ha! Mine is pretty much the opposite. I realize how much I love dresses and skirts so I am limiting the pants etc that I buy. I totally agree that the “essentials” list is not necessarily the essentials for you. Also, climate is so important too in that list.
@christinezwicke10023 жыл бұрын
WOW...sheer brilliance! I have been feeling some "cognitive dissonance" that is mounting with all of the "essentials." YOUR content in this video has opened my eyes and defined exactly what that nagging feeling is. While I have fantasies of wearing many of the pieces you ticked off, my lifestyle just doesn't call for them. And, the price tag to finance the fantasy is beginning to keep me up at night!!!! So, now that you've defined what I couldn't, I, too, am starting to declutter my wardrobe. I'll sell what I can and donate what I must...and stop the bleeding ($$$$). I have no words, except I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Signed, soon to be free❣

My biggest issue has been the amount of turnover in my wardrobe in recent years - so I don't purchase anything I can't see myself keeping (and using regularly) for at least 5 years. This means choosing items that are high quality, functional, and suit my style. Making this a criterion has really helped me approach purchases with foresight. Even though I'm not always perfect, I've made way better choices.

There is nothing wrong with a 'simple' outfit. You'll look timeless and that's also great. I wanted to get a vintage Chanel bag, but that money. For me it's not an investment... I don't live in a big city where it's common to have/wear designer items. I'll feel uncomfortable. I have 1 YSL bag and I haven't used it once. How sad is that. It was a dream bag for me, but I regret it a little. The plan is to use it when I travel, but I doubt that I'll do that.

I'm honestly your exact opposite! I too consider myself a minimalist (kinda), but in order to really make my wardrobe look like me I realised I NEEDED color, I needed dresses and feminine pieces. For a long time I was in the "well I guess a minimalist wardrobe is just black/white/gray basics" thought pattern and let me tell you, I found it boring. Looks amazing on other people, like you Christina, but it's just not me. I'm glad I learned to trust my taste and realised I can have color and patterns and vintage looking details and still be very minimalist.

Your honesty is very helpful. It can take a long time to let go of the fantasy self. It's akin to having to stop hanging out with a super fun friend whose lifestyle is simply incompatible with yours. I'm fully aware of my fantasy self and yet I still occasionally buy things for her instead of me 😂

After Covid hit... I realized that I did not have enough of the clothing that I needed. I owned only one pair of joggers and I would wear them almost every day to walk dogs and then take them off... I was not able to buy anything when Covid was full blown. After it got better... I went out and bought lots and lots of joggers which is what I usually need to wear more of at this point in my life. I was very very suprised to see that you gave up colors because knowing your best colors is also about minimalism. I see the color palette your attracted to... but I think you would look great in a little bit of color.

I've made plenty of mistakes when it comes to buying clothing, but when I place a budget on myself and stick to a list of things I need, that allows me to have more money saved in the bank for my future. I remember when I first got into the capsule wardrobe system myself, and since then, I've transitioned out of that mold of having those "absolute essentials" like the white t-shirt or white button up shirt. I honestly just don't enjoy white as much as I used to, and so black is the only basic color I have in my wardrobe as it complements the rest of my very colorful palette.

Liked and subbed!! Key points that were unique and really stood out to me. 1. The concept of the Fantasy self - This was such a revelation. I have bought items that I never realized before, were only to feed some form of fantasy self that I wanted to fulfil. 2. The item wearing you. 3. Buying "staples that are required in every female's wardrobe" - I've fallen prey to this as well. Owning a nude pair, white sneaks, etc., Except those staples come in so many forms and: a. You either end up buying many types of the same staple (eg., 2 types of nude heels, etc.,) b. Your clothes and style are actually much more limited and don't extend to all staples.
@Tam-us1kf3 жыл бұрын
Your realization was spot on. I am always giving things away because I don't feel comfortable, it doesn't fit right or bring me joy. Since I am now more in tune to my likes and dislikes, I'm more selective with my clothes when it comes to material, fitting my lifestyle, and my desire to wear them over and over again. I also want to save more money and can't see spending so much on clothing anymore so I am becoming familiar with the life of thrifting. As far as heels....once in five years.

I love this! I was exactly the same and I don’t even want to think about how much money I have frittered away over the years on clothes and accessories I did not need or even use. Now I only have clothes that I actually use as I have been getting rid of all the fantasy self items. I live in leggings and T shirts because that’s what suits my life but I don’t even have a ridiculous amount of those anymore. As for that wedding outfit I have 2 dresses and I just pick one of those and repeat them.

Backpack girl here too 😉 lovin this vid.. Really great advice!!! Gotta say I’m with you on all these items. I came to the realization several years ago that I just don’t have a need to wear dresses skirts and heels or anything that makes me feel uncomfortable. I spend a lot of my days outside in the Canadian Rockies and they just don’t fit my lifestyle. So have not purchased these things in many years now and have rid myself of what I for some reason was hanging onto. Having only the items that fit my lifestyle is all I need. I never really purchase new items as I know what I like, I know what I will wear and when I do make the rare purchase I focus on quality and always ask will it fit my lifestyle! ☮️ ❤️

I have a purse I feel is “minimalist.” It’s a wallet and cell phone holder with touch screen access, and has one pocket in the front I carry my mini sketchbook in, a couple pens, and chapstick. It could fit sunglasses instead, but I don’t tend to wear those usually, unlike my husband who wears his almost daily, lol. it WAS called “the weekender,” and apparently now called “Traveler. It’s $60, and the brand is called “Save The Girls.” They named it that to try to discourage women from carrying their phones in their bras, and then getting breast cancer. You’d have to check dimensions tho to see if it would fit your phone size, they have other bags for different sizes of phones.

I stopped buying blazers (never wear and don’t fit my SAHM life) and heels (ouch!), but mostly I stopped buying trendy fun activewear. I realized I only ever wear black, high-waisted leggings or joggers, and a certain style of sports bra. I would always buy the cool new printed leopard print, neons, etc but I never wore them, mostly because a) I didn’t feel confident in them ( they were too busy and were definitely “wearing me”) and b) no matter how expensive or good quality a brand claims to be… I have never ever found a non-black pair of leggings that passed the squat test. Black ones sometimes will fail as well, but they tend to be a lot less obvious when they are see thru. My fashion go to is always high waisted shorts or flowy linen pants with a more snug tank or tee, or a midi-wrap dress. With Chelsea boots, flat sandals, or white converse depending on the season.

I’m by with you. I’m not a jerk person too. But I did but some smaller heels for two weddings coming up. Others trainers or boots.

i stop buying skinny jeans as well because it is so hard to find that fits me perfectly and my legs look like sticks when i use skinny jeans 😂 i am leaning towards loose jeans and heck, they are so goood and i dont have to worry about what my legs will look like

I have stopped buying blazers as i just never wear them. Kept 1 for work specific stuff that comes up but thats really it. I have stopped buying multiple kinds of dress shoes as i realized i just wear sneakers every day and dress shoes are just uncomfortable to walk in all day. Similar to your skinny jeans i stopped buying slim fit pants as they just dont work for me and i end up not wearing them becausee they are uncomfortable, now i just do straight leg.

I feel you! This is a perfect example of how someone’s “go-to” may not necessarily be someone else’s! (Eg the blazers) ❤️
