I'd say add a resonator from an e55 in the middle to take the harshness out the turbo whine. VGT turbos are a lot harsher whistle then a fixed vane turbo. Or the e63 mufflers which would allow more engine tone with damped turbo whistle. My 7.3 psd with a big turbo has a straight through resonator and muffler. Sounds good a the perfect amount of turbo noise.

most diesels don't sound better unrestricted, imo. I don't hate it, i just think the same mod on any gasoline car would make more of a difference.

Straight piping a diesel is the way to go. I did that to a Mazda 6 2.0d. I took out the cat and the DPF. I chipped it from 143 to about 170 ps. I also modded the airbox, it was quite restricted. My mpg went from 6.5-6.7 l/100 km to 5.3 l/100 km which is a 25% increase in fuel economy. The car feels a lot faster. I think that's all you need to do to a common rail modern diesel: chip tune it and derestrict the intake and exhaust, don't bother with other expensive upgrades. Now, regarding the exhaust: after I decat and de-DPFed it I was left with the muffler only. I wanted to bypass the muffler so I installed a cheap electric cutout. Works great! The straight-piped sound when the cutout is open is awesome. Inside the car it is barely perceptible but nice until the turbo spools up. Then it is quite a bit louder. Outside it is definitely louder but I don't know how much louder since I always drive it. When I close the cutout it is as silent as before.I think the electric cutout is fine for a diesel since the exhaust gases are not as hot as a gasoline engine so the cheap cutout should last longer than for a gasoline where a vacuum activated cutout would fare better. The only negative is that on cold morning the engine smells a bit more. I am considering getting a new better flowing cat and installing it after the cutout or even in place of the muffler. What do you guys think?

Turbos are the best mufflers. I straight piped my Porsche 911 (997 C2S) and it shook the windows of my house during cold start in the garage. Because the 911 has a rear-engine layout, there wasn’t even that much piping. It was louder than any race car I’ve heard in my life.

I like the idea of cutouts. As an aside back in the late 70's early 80's we used to have raging keggers right around the corner from where Driven Performance is. Before they reconfigured the runways at O'Hare my buddy had a house right on Irving Park Road and at the end of the side street, you could see the runways. Good times until some pilot would call the cops because he saw the bonfire.

9:02 For those who are wondering, the ratteling noise is not caused by some broken/loose part, its the camshaft chain that is ajusted hydraulically when the engine is just starting. The engine need to create oil preassure for the adjuster to tention the chain and in turn quiets down after a few minutes. Hope i was of any help and have a good day.
@Creek_Hunter6 жыл бұрын
Not true, the engine quiets in a few second upon starting. I can see on the dashboard the oil level dropping immediately once the engine starts. It's not your typical older Benz. Unless he is using a thicker oil, maybe...
