I draw an eye every year to track my technical progress since high school. Each drawing marks my evolving skills. This year, I finally brought a long-time idea to life. This video discusses the experience and the creative process behind my latest eye drawing. Hope this glimpse into my process is a cathartic one.

2:21 I gasped. I don’t think I’ve ever had that reaction to a drawing before! I hope all the sunbirds of your life will rest on peaceful perches soon. 💕

I used to see those particles pulsating. So frightening! My mother told me that they were my little doll dreams. After that I was no longer afraid, I used to think "my doll is dreaming again". Funny, my pastels and drawings have that sort of vibration.

I've always been the one to see the stories in someone's work. I loved this completely and I think imagery and story are all you need to explain your work. Even if you can't say what in means persay, I think the story of how it came together is enough. 👏🏿

I have loved absorbing your work and methods. I was an animator and vfx artist my entire career which meant I did primarily line drawings. Cancer robbed me of my right elbow so I wanted to learn new ways of drawing and had just started drawing left handed. It wasn’t long the dreaded tremors started. I can’t hold a pencil anymore and drawing is an itch I just can’t scratch. Watching you work satisfies those urges to an extent. I built a life with my art and it was taken from me. A house fire erased any proof I’d ever drawn anything at all. So all that’s to say I’m grateful for your sharing your passion. I’d give anything to have it all back. In the meantime, I get to live vicariously through you.

My sons (10 and 12) both heard your story and were stunned that they have similar recurring visions. One when he's trying to sleep, the other trying to still particles that are a type of proxy for icky feelings when he is sick and just trying to steer awareness away from a fever or nausea. Seems like there's a modicum of control in that space for them.

This is such a beautiful piece. I absolutely love your Sunbird theme. It truly resonates with me in a way I had not anticipated, but works! Wow, just brilliant! And these little birds are the cutest thing of all. Thank you so much for sharing this. Life is hard, and when we suffer from anxiety and depression to the point of having to take medication just to function, I know how hard it is. This is truly a fantastic piece, a fantastic theme, and an incredible result.

When I was young I would struggle to sleep because every time I'd close my eyes I would see an eye slowly coming towards me and it would freak me out and I'd open my eyes to see whatever light there was in my room so as to not see an eye in the dark. Sometimes it was a bald man with an intense stare slowly coming towards me but mostly just an eye.

Sometimes there is no meaning. There dosent have to be. If you’re not satisfied with that then try to figure out why. If you are fine with it then that’s totally okay. I had a couple of Japanese friends back in my fashion designing days, they always tried to design with as little to no meaning as possible. This collection is based on circles, the end 😂😊

I believe that visual art has its own language! Words inform feelings which distract from the essence of what has been created. I never explain as I feel it is manipulating someones experience and reality. I think people live too much in their heads. But thats my opinion.

@jondoh587

from Wikipedia: "The sunbirds have counterparts in two very distantly related groups: the hummingbirds of the Americas and the honeyeaters of Australia. The resemblances are due to convergent evolution brought about by a similar nectar-feeding lifestyle."
