Absolutely correct Tim! Finding the right balance of what to play to support the song or the backing track is always essential to become a better musician. Whenever I am listening to your playing you always prove me right! Leaving spaces to let the song breathe and speeding up and playing more notes and more complicated stuff, if the backing track gives you enough space. And exactly that is why you are in my top 10 list of guitarist! Thanks for sharing! highly entertaining and educational! Love it! Cheers DimiZ

Good new year to you, kind sharer of grooving guitar Philosophy. Why just earlier this morning or late last night... I listened to the “Toy Matinee Live” CD that featured you soloing and riffing and KG laughed (very much like you do when you throw a slurey of triple 20s of riffage) when he introduced you to the audience and they roared! What a band you were in and what a record you guys made. Still to this day...it is amazing in so many ways. So much talent on one stage. I hear your playing on so many records/CDs that I have gone out of my way to buy, back when we all did that at any Tower Records store, open ’til midnight. We were all so lucky to be free to follow our hears and ears into our minds your music was welcomed and desired. We are all here now enjoying your presence. Thank you for all you do! On the simple play-through I immediately started hearing more of the ensemble as a whole. If this had been a live band the simplicity would have created more space for the other players to interact. Any space from any of the players draws the ear to the others. First player that comes to mind for me is the (was the) drummer for Pat Metheny throughout much of his career, the supremely tasteful Paul Wertico. His tactful and subtle underplaying gave great support to Metheny and Mays to be easily heard and allowed the over-all arc of the tune to be velvety smooth. I honestly can't listen to the newer band because of all the bombastic drumming, and I'm a drummer by trade. Thanks as always Tim.

@LOFIGSD 2 жыл бұрын
Agree, by simplifying and stopping to play, you are giving the listener time to breath, and anticipate what is coming back in. Interesting what you said about Santana, this happens in many industries, example, Portrait Painting for commercial studios in China, used to be the same in Europe the apprentices do most of the painting, its the Masters who add the finishing details, that make the Picture.

To know the scales and chords over the entire fretboard is like being released from a 4'x4' candle lit cubicle to the outdoors. There are distinct riffs that associate well with certain chord forms, and not so well with the same chord elsewhere, which has its own advantages. Its funny how infinite the guitar neck looks when you don't know it and how incredibly tiny it is when you see how everything links up with infinity as you play. You can get to a point where music is playing you, and you're becoming aware of goings on around you. You don't want to miss that, after all, you paid admission!

Hooray for snowpack in the mountains and a cool spring to slow the melt. Livestock deaths and crop yields well below normal are hard to take. 2022 is starting out much happier!
