@@BikesofRye Sandblasting is abrasive and you have now removed the very smooth finish on the inside of the piston housing. This will have altered the clearance between the piston and the housing and there also could be more friction between the surfaces.

I have had many Super Dreams 250's. One of them I rode 83,000 miles in 2 years (despatch riding). I sold it with 96,000 miles on the clock and still running fine. Brilliant bikes.

Hi, I have owned and ridden several Dreams and Superdreams over the years and from the audio I think you may be suffering from the dreaded cam rattle. If you check the cam for ovality and the rocker lobes you will be able to tell for sure, they were a weak point. Other than that, well done and keep going with the rebuilds.

Thanks for the feedback and I would say sometimes the gopro audio through a helmet mic can make the bike sound different. It does to me anyway when I listen to it back. In person it sounds solid. I do need to balance the carbs though

This brings back memories for me. I used to courier on a 250 super dream in the 1980s in London. Good reliable little bikes, a bit gutless, but comfortable to ride for 9 hours a day delivering packages around town. Also very economical too. You've done a good job as a novice mechanic. I would suggest replacing the front brake hose with a braided one. The brakes on these machines were not the best when they were new. So braided lines will improve them a bit.

@@wibblywobblyidiotvision Mate, the frequency of that particular rattle was cam related. That leads you to tappets, (unlikely as BOR would have adjusted on rebuild) cam chain (due to stuck tensioner, possible?) or worn cam lobes and/ or rocker lobes. That gets my vote as the engines (400 and 250) had a tendency to start to eat these components on bikes over 20,000 miles. It's a pain but an easy fix if the parts are still available.

A really good hack I use to bleed the front brake on my trail bikes is to squeeze the lever in as far as it will go, then zip strip it to the handle grip and leave it overnight. The pressure atomisers the large air bubbles and they bleed back by themselves into the reservoir. Works really well keep up the vids mate thoroughly enjoy them, best way to learn is to have a crack at anything cheers.

A good tip, methinks. A little vibration also helps to loosen the molecular attraction of tiny bubbles to the inner walls of the brake lines, allowing them to rise up into the master cylinder. Check the girlfriend's bedside cabinet. In a former life I spent a similar amount of time trying to bleed the front brake on a Suzy 550.

I would say that the tacho is shot - it doesn't seem to react to engine speed changes (frinstance when you change gear). Watch between 16:27 & 16:36 - initially it is very sluggish, then between 16:34 & 16:36 it whizzes up to the red line while the engine note rises steadily. 17:35 to 17:37 - engine accelerates loads, tacho moves a couple of hundred rpm; change gear at 17:38, tacho doesn't drop at all, but in fact carries on going up..... unless the soundtrack is out of kilter with the picture? Unfortunately, as others have said - the engine doesn't sound 100%. Back in the day (I was 21 when this bike was registered), Superdreams were a very quiet engine, with just a little bit of camchain rustle. Having said that, it is likely to carry on running and rattling for few thousand miles yet! So well done!! But PLEASE get some soft jaws for your vices!!!!

It sounds like the Cam chane Rattle. If you didn't replace the cam tensioner, I would do that as they become brittle with age . I was 15 years old when i restored/ rebuilt my first bike, a honda TL125 with a broken piston liner and bent gear selector fork, and then a 1978 honda CB 200 a complete totall engine rebuild then worked on suzuki's yamaha's and the last one was a 1948 James comet plus I've owned a number of different bikes over the years it was great fun and great times but do to back and other health issues I can't ride two wheels anymore and trikes are to expensive and not a big enough garage to keep one in

I had the predecessor of the Dream 250 and what a gutless bike it was. It ate its own head with only just over 10k on the clock. I managed to find a Super dream head that had slightly different rockers but fitter perfectly, which it fitted after flushing the engine only for it to happen again. The eventual cause was a faulty oil pump. The star shaped rotor in the oil pump was chipped whether this was the cause or a consequence I don't know, however after the second head and a brand new pump it was fine mechanically. I was a gutless bike you were lucky to pull 80 on the clock and that would be over a cliff, a friend of mine had a 250 K4 that was faster across the board and my Dream even struggled to keep up with his other bike a CB200. My cousin bought a Super Dream he used for a commuter bike and asked me to have a look at it when it started rattling and needed a new balance chain which was a real pain to replace but we got it done and it was fine after that. The Super Dream was as gutless as it's predecessor and in my opinion didn't look as good. Years later I borrowed a mates 400N while i was having some work done on my bike, it was a revelation it had enough power to make it quite a good bike other than it's looks. Later I discovered that the 250 was a sleaved down 400 specifically for the British market which explained why it was such a gutless pig of a bike. In my opinion the 250 Dream/Super Dream is one of the worst if not the worst bike Honda ever made and put me off of Honda motorcycles for years.

I had one of these new in 1982 (X reg) and kept it for 26 years. Used it for commuting to work and in later years for my winter bike. Did all of the maintenance myself but that front brake was never very good in the wet even with EBC pads. Wished many times that I had not sold it for the £350 when I didn't need it any more. Just bought my third winter bike since that one so could have saved a lot of money and kept it.

I had one in 1997. The book speed was 90mph and I wasn't happy with the 70mph I got from it. I fitted a new air filter and platinum tipped Nippon Denso plugs. Managed to get 88mph from it. Small engine but physically big. Lovely bike.

I had a Superdream at 17. Had to have it flat out everywhere to try and keep up with the RDs, never could. At 3000 miles the cams were hanging out of it. Part exed it for a CX500, that’s another story.

I had a blue superdream as my first proper bike 20 years ago, some numpty cross threaded the oil drain bolt so I ended up putting some JB weld on a new one to plug the hole and then tapped a thread through the center of the new bolt, the speedo drive went wonky as well so the needle would flap about all over the place. still it felt like a real bike, certainly bloody heavy enough!

This was 1984. I obviously didnt make a good impression as he never ever came back to see me again. Im 54 now. He is now passed. But i will always remember that superdream.

Excellent. I bought a cheap 1980 CB250N Superdream a few months back. It was running, but only just. It was really just a bit of a whim - I wanted to get a bike on the road and enjoy a few miles before the end of Summer. It has been such good fun - I've now done over 600 miles on it and have decided to keep it - it hasn't missed a single beat. It is extremely comfortable to ride even for my old bones (I am 65), and I'm happy to sit on it for an hour (plus) at a time. I didn't do a full restoration - that will come later I just wanted it to run well and look OK. But the carbs were a nightmare at first. I ended up completely stripping them and cleaning them in an ultrasonic cleaner - which worked a treat. I noticed that it looked like your balance chain tensioner was at its limit of adjustment. It is easy (with the clutch cover off) to move the adjustment 'thing' (strange slotted moving do-dah) round on its splines and get lots more adjustment. I did this to mine and it smoothed out the engine no end. I never fancied it as a bike when I was younger, and am amazed by the number of people (older men usually) who talk to me and say it was the bike they always wanted (or the bike they had). I wasn't expecting to like it all all. But it is such a fun little bike to ride on country roads. I've actually bought some luggage for it, and am so tempted to do a 'silly' long ride on it next year (like the NC500). Nice job - it looks great.

My brother had one of these new in 1981 for his 17th birthday. These engines were always a bit gutless but very smooth and refined. When in good condition the engine made very little mechanical noise and produced a pleasing (to my ears) high frequency gear whine or whistle similar to the VFR750. The 400 version was much livelier.

To get the piston out the brake calliper, I remove the hose and bleed valve. Put a cloth over the piston (because they sometimes fly out) get an airline with the squidgy tapered nozzle put finger over hose hole. The air pressure should be sufficient to pop the piston out. One of my first despatch bikes was a Super Dream 250 that I bought in 1985 for £80. It lasted 5 months and was still running - I sold the front wheel and forks for £50 back wheel for £20 and the tank for £20 - Frame and engine were free to the buyer :)

Every old bike I buy I always rebuild the master cylinders. They’re soo easy and cheap to do. Oh and I have never had to reverse bleed etc any brake system. You just need a syringe to pull fluid through and bleed at banjo joints sometimes

To clean inside caliper like my 23 Yr old fazer,brass wire wheels are around £3 or £4 a pack,spray inside with brake cleaner and put brass brush in cordless drill,no damage done but you may use a few of them and get into the grooves the seals sit in,crap builds up in there even behind the seals,keep up the work it's good to learn.

Looks very nice. I don't know if the mike is a bit sensitive in the upper frequency range but it sounds a little ticky in the top end. Might be worth checking out. These engines are known for timing chain and cam issues. My own 250 Drean rattled away quite voaclly. I didn't care as it was worth very little at the time, the early eighties, but this bike is now worth the effort.

I have just recommissioned an old Honda Rebe 250 that has stood for 20 years. Think it's the same engine but sigle carb thank goodness . Tank had intenal rust . I had to fit a new chinese tank . The engine is almost silent but I know they always sound worse through a mike so yours may be ok when heard normally . Both my tyres were age cracked so I had to replace them . They are great bikes once sorted . Not fast but reliable and easy to ride. Nice job you did . I really enjoyed the video .

I bought one (circa 1989) to commute from T Wells into City (of London) - very economical by slower than a slug. Anyway, about a week after started using it, I was at Brands and joined the AA (you know, just in case). Three days later (it was a Wednesday) and approaching Tower Bridge and bike died. AA eventually arrived (I told them I suspected the cam chain had snapped so bring a van). Bloke arrived, didn't agree with my thoughts, couldn't get bike going, called a recovery van. I stripped engine, cam chain had snapped. Replaced, got running and sold asap. Cracking rebuild though..

That engine sounds like it's suffering from more than just needing some carburettor adjustment. Cam or rod knock, maybe. Still, starting with a bike that I considered unfixable, you've done a brilliant job. Also, I couldn't resist checking the DVLA website, showing the bike as its original black colour, untaxed and with no MOT. Is it old enough to not require them? What's the rule with old cars and bikes?

A quick way to pop pistons from calipers is to use compressed air. Place caliper on a rag on the bench and make sure the piston is pointing at the bench into the rag. Using an air compressor gun, place that in the inlet port and blow. The piston will come out very quickly!

Well done! I had a 79 Superdream, but I hated it! I had a CB250G5 when I was 17, back in 1977. I loved it but always remembered my first real bike. Now, at 64, I'm riding a 1973 CB360, which I restored. I still have bigger bikes, but I enjoy the CB360. When I got it, the original tyres were still on it! It was an American import.

For the 1979 - 1980 V reg plate UK selling year, the CB250N "Super Dream" (AKA "The Wet Dream", "Super Slug", "Side Street Sleeper" by bikers, back then) was the UK's biggest selling 250cc learner motorcycle. In second place was the slightly faster (and way lighter) CZ250 and in third place was the Yamaha RD250E (which was way faster than both). Back when I was on L plates, in 1980, 8 out of 10 L plated 250's were CB250N Super Dream's.

Heat would have shifted that caliper piston a lot quicker. I've had way too much experience of removing chrome-plated pistons that have gone rusty from early Brembo P08 calipers, until Brembo finally swapped them for teflon-coated aluminium ones. As for the master cylinder; if a bike has been standing for a number of years _always_ assume that both calipers and master cylinders will need new overhaul kits. In fact, always assume that most (if not all) of the rubber parts will need replacing and that includes the CV carb diaphragms. Yes, it's easy for me to say because I've been at that game for 46 years now!

i had a soupy dream best old twin honda i had was a 125cc twin 1978 and the 175cc twin, 1976/7 both had mods off with the drum brake and disk bolted on ,and homewelded cut down pipes ,skimmed heads reported inlets outlets rejetted changed engine sprockets and back wheel sprocket set ,,both bikes ran smooth and better,i had a cx 500 was a nightmare

I've owned 4 250 Superdreams and 2 400's over the years and most who knock them have never had one as they're great little bikes that do what they were designed to do perfectly,the 400 is really nice. Great job but I do agree with others abut the sound of it,I know just rebuilt,low miles so far etc but it does sound a bit rough for a S/Dream and I've done a lot of miles of them over a lot of years.

When bleeding the calliper normally you’ve got to pull the lever for fluid to flow through… If you’ve got it mostly bled, just pull the lever and secure it overnight… when you come back in the morning the brake will be solid.

Passed my test on one of these with a sidecar on it in 1989 and I can remember that these calipers were like hens teeth even back then.

Me too Dave, I had dropped a valve on my 250 Dream the week before my test and borrowed my mates Superdream. Half an hour in a car park to get used to it and I passed. My next bike was a 1956 Bullet 350.

100% support your efforts. Should sound sweet as a sewing machine. Start with valve clearance,one hole does all could be the bores looked like the clutch plates. Yes I have restored bikes but haven't taken on something that stood that long so hats off to you and good luck with your channel.

Ime delighted to see the old honda ride again 🤗 in 1997 I had a HONDA CB250RS in red and I crashed it into a river and left it thare for 3 days cos I was hurt 🤕 I went with my uncle and fished it out the river with a tractor and after a few hours fetling fresh fuel oil and filters it started with 10 kicks 💪👍 love these old Hondas ❤

You’ve exceeded yourself on this one. It looks spanking. People were commenting on the rough sounding engine. I checked around KZbin and quite a few of them sound like yours. It obviously performs well. Balance the carbs I reckon. Top job 👌🏻
