Nah, the worst thing is not that it is made by fans, it is the fact that they are made by lazy/incompetent fans. Like most of the bots don't have anything besides one description. Yet it has quite a good Advanced mode, where people can define each part of the character, including lengthy backstory. And it's not even that hard to make it. CAI Reddit has posts with templates of good character definition. You just follow it's formatting and that's it. Made few characters myself and they fit into what had in mind for them. Not perfect, but there's no dissonance.

People often don't train the bots. They come up with the creator/profile into and let the chatbot pull stuff out of the aether. Training involves doing a lot of test chats and editing the bots responses or guiding them on what to do. I've done this with my bots for random OC characters. Memory also matters. The AI can only recall so much info for so many chats before it loses access to earlier things you mentioned or said. Also, AI is a incorrectly attributed term, but people are using it, so we'll need to differentiate AGI and ASI (if it's possible) in the future. This is more like data consolidation and prediction. It's a noise filter trained on patterns. AI is in it's absolute infancy, so much that it's basically in gestation. People using it incorrectly (relying on it for real world info or complex calculations) and companies over relying on it as it is now is just not intelligent.

If you want to give it a try, regarding the reading thing, a lot of Brandon Sanderson's books are part of something called "graphic audio." It's basically an audiobook, but you've got sound effects, different voice actors and actresses, it's really cool. Might be worth checking out, because Sanderson is a fantastic author. Definitely recommend starting out with the Mistborn trilogy.
