This is not a hard course. I ran it to get in, I was one of the first sessions to have to run it to be allowed in. I passed with a 1:36 and not in the best shape I could be. I’m now in my 10th week of basic mandate and finish next week. If you are determined enough you can do it.

Most agencies have a physical entrance test thats harder than this. I think this is fair.

All cops should be physically fit. Being a cop is stressful enough. You don’t want to burden your body more by being unhealthy.

my son made it through the police academy the first time through and he turned 53 yrs old a week before graduation. He started a strenuous PT schedule months before he entered the academy so he was physically prepared. thats the way you do it!

@@aminrucker6064 Recommend running a 1 mile or 1 1/2 mile every day to build your cardio. Push ups to build your chest and arms. Sit ups for your core and of course doing squats to build up your leg muscles to help you run a bit longer.

Be in shape. Stop hiring people who are over weight, and or obese. If you can't take care of your self, then what good are? Sitting in a squad car eating donuts, and coffee.

If the big problem is that they can't find officers, maybe they could waive this for certain recruits who can be hired specifically for desk positions or for dispatch. I'm not sure how the employees are designated or how it's structured. Maybe hires could be acquired for positions that have minimal physical requirements, with the understanding that the individuals will enter into physical training and must pass the course before they enter in as full fledged arresting officers. I have to wonder.... are the police required to have physicals and pass these courses periodically and throughout their careers? I've seen some cops who I'm sure couldn't run that course, and even some who break out in a sweat walking from the patrol car to a driver's side window. Some who have guts that would rival Santa, and that look like their bellies would impede access to their sidearms. Some of them have been in law enforcement for years, but most I've known are small town officers.

I know Gwinnett used to require you to do so many pushups within a certain time, situps within a certain time and then you had to run a mile and a half. Seems that's all changed now with this new obstacle course.

At the same time many departments have a no foot chase policy in place. If they have policy that says don't foot chase than running around to 2min is not in line with what they are doing. 90% of the time they will spend sitting in a patrol car getting fat.

I don't understand that the military will post standards that they expect new recruits to pass prior to the start of basic training ., but we have law enforcement agencies that are reluctant to use a test that takes 2 minutes to assess whether or not candidates can pass a PFA? Prior to joining the academy classes OMG all of our service academies do this the first day. And you are told well in advance before the day you are scheduled for report what kind of physical shape you should be in and are actually giving advice in terms of what physical exercises to do to meet that standard. And we have law enforcement agencies who want a exemption from that type of testing. To be honest.... you should report to the academy in your best physical shape, not use the academy to get in shape

The difference is, the military isn’t hurting for applicants.

you also have all the way to the end to pass in boot camp. the first one you take is to see were you are at so you can work on it and pass the last one that counts.

Im in law Enforcement…never lower the standards if you’re in this profession you owe it to the citizens to be in excellent shape. If you can’t live up to that, you’re just a liability at that point, work somewhere else

A gender neutral physical fitness test that was used by the Pennsylvania State Police to screen applicants for the Trooper position was the subject of a lawsuit for disparate impact sex discrimination filed by the Obama DOJ and the case was ultimately settled with the agency scrapping said standard. The case was called United States v. Pennsylvania and it was filed in the US District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

This is a disgrace. The police force is responsible for ensuring public safety, both in terms of protection and physical security. If they are unable to perform their duties, then they are unsuitable for their job. This poses a risk not only to the public but also to their fellow officers. It is imperative to establish a standard that all officers must adhere to.

Illinois State Police and Texas Department of Public Safety have annual fitness testing for their sworn members if I remember correctly. Additionally, all officers and enlisted personnel who are military police have to pass physical fitness testing for their respective military branches.

Let me tell you about Alpharetta. Only *one* girl passed recruit PT in the hiring test. I came in second place. You have to pass all the events. I was slower than the required time for the mile and a half but passed pushups pull ups and sprints. There were a LOT of women there. Oh, they made you run these runs on gravel. Nobody trains on gravel. I certainly didn't. I trained on asphalt or treadmills. The whole thing is designed to root out women. They don't want to hire them and I have never seen a cop need to run a 1.5 mile endurance run to catch a bad guy. The whole thing is dumb. If you can sprint you should be able to be fine. If you can complete the event you should be fine. The difference between the way a sprinters muscles work vs a endurance runner are way different. The whole thing is ridiculous that I got second place out of the females and that wasn't even good enough? Only ONE WOMAN was still a candidate and they said I could come back in 6 months. I have a dance background and worked out as my job. It was extremely depressing to train for months to have them waste my time.
